They can't travel into their own personal history!

Everything is their own personal history. Take weather as a chaotic system. With all the changes in the past, there is quite the probability that the weather for a given day changes. This can change outcomes of historic events to an enormous extent (or not at all)

Also time travel is logically impossible.

And don't get me started on that whole "bigger on the inside" thing. I've run dozens of experiments on dozens of telephone boxes, and it just doesn't work.

Meh, a logic conclusion depends on the quality of the premises and premises are an assumption that something is true.
In the case of time travel, there are multiple possibilities for premises that would allow time travel as well as those that do not.
The laws of physics don't definitively rule out time travel (for ex Closed Timelike Curves) and at the quantum level, classical time travel paradoxes like the grandfather problem are mathematically resolvable and that resolution has been simulated successfully.
    The best answer is maybe.

Now if the statement was "Doctor Who doesn't do a very good job of making time travel believable or realistically handling possible ways it could happen" well then yeah, of course. He's a wizard with a magic box fighting fantasy monsters. They don't specifically set out to try, although some episodes can occasionally do a fairly good job of exploring time travel thought experiments.

    I liked the ending.
She not a dying old spinster. Hooray! :P

    Dear God.

I would love to see the show play around with that theory in modern physics that our reality is a holographic projection from a black hole.

I was going to say I would have preferred the ending if:
He'd rushed to Clara to find no head crab on her. The whole thing had been his dream and his alone.

But then I realised that wouldn't work. If she hadn't seen the events there as well, he would have just quietly walked off to mope alone.

    Hey, you UK folks.

Just out of curiosity, is there any reason that the mirror is treated with any more respect than, say, our national enquirer?

A Dr Who article pops up on my google news feed, talking about how bad the show is doing and how moffat might get fired and surprise surprise it's the mirror...bastions of numerous other Who stories in the past that turned out to be blatantly made up. And like those times other news sites pick up the story and run with it, like it's legitimate, quoting only the mirror article and the unnamed 'fans' that the mirror article quotes.

I know, i know, fox news, but how many times can you just print made up news before people stop paying attention?

Fox News is a pretty good comparison, except we have a few newspapers competing for that desirable 'dumb' demographic.

We also have intelligent-seeming but hilariously bigoted newspapers like the Telegraph or Mail.

I think we are unusual in that our newspapers are mostly appalling, but TV news is not so bad.

To be fair I'd say the show has declined in Mofatt's run from mid season 7. "Last Christmas" would have been an average episode in season 5 and 6.

To be fair I'd say the show has declined in Mofatt's run from mid season 7. "Last Christmas" would have been an average episode in season 5 and 6.

Christmas episodes have historically been...not great; or at the very least not among the best in a given season. Though, I'd say Last Christmas is up there as probably the best (I know, people seem enamored with Christmas Carol, but eh...)

Also it's kind of a taste thing. There's people who, beyond just liking Tennant more than Smith, for instance, like the Davies series more than the Moffat ones and ho boy does that make my head spin. So. Many. Just flat out horrible episodes and stories and acting. So many.

And, lets be fair(er), Series 5 and 6 still had shit like Vampires in Venice and Curse of the Black Dot (and yes, even the Wedding of River Song). Yes, I'd agree that they were more concentrated goodness than 7 or 8 (though, IMO 8 has been so far superior to 7 in every possible way, first or second half, that I would find it hard take an argument seriously that the show is on a downward decline), but they had their stinkers too. Personally, even the 'bad' in series 8 never reached the lows of some of the S 5/6/7 stuff, and not even close to shit like Fear Her and other miseries from the Davies era. I didn't even force my wife to watch Love & Monsters and Fear Her as we we've been going through the show, and I'll probably never force myself to watch them again either.

All that being said, my point in the question wasn't really about personal tastes in the show, since that can vary a lot, this thread making that very apparent; it was the seriousness of how some sites took the Mirror article as if it were just a given that 'a majority of fans' were 'disappointed in series 8' blah blah and that Moffat might be fired, which is patently absurd. As a reminder this is the same rag that pushed out a totally serious article about Coleman leaving after S8, to the point of even completely making up a letter she supposedly wrote about it. That's really what I was getting at.

But, anyway, here's some fun regardless:

To be fair I haven't been the biggest fan of Moffat and I thought that season 5 and 6 (I won't even bring 7 into it), while having a lot of good character arcs, tried way too hard to be nonsensically connected and some of the turns it took were more to show how clever they could be than for any attempt at good writing. . .Up until this point I felt Moffat was a better episode writer than he was a show runner.

That being said Moffat's redeemed himself in my eyes with season 8. Season 8 is hands down my favorite season of New Who.

That's why stories with dreams always end up in fandom's theories about secretly never ending. The last time this happened was with the Dream Lord.

So I've been watching through the show (rather slowly) with my girlfriend, and she's been greatly enjoying it. We're in Donna's run right now, and I was really struck by how many GREAT episodes there are with Donna as the companion, and I'm finding her far less annoying this time through.

She really got dealt a shit hand in her departure.

Also, the four specials at the end of Tennant's run (Planet of the Dead, The Waters of Mars, and The End of Time Parts 1 and 2) are really, really good.

Also also, for anyone else watching through, all BBC shows are being removed from Netflix streaming at the end of the month, so you might want to binge.

Watched the zombie on the train and the 2D people episodes last night.

Train one started of really good, but after the "revelation" about the scientists it went all down hill. That entire plot added nothing, and the scientists were useless. I guess it was just done as a setup for future episodes?

And the zombie reveal was dissapointing.

2D people one was quite good as well. Visuals were top notch and suitably creepy. Liked the uncertaintly of what their motivations and if we could even succesfully comunicate with them.

Doctor acted a lot smarter in these two.
