So, jumping back into the game today. My Templar is somewhere in Egypt at this point. Do I want to buy any of these content updates now or do I wait till end game?
Issue 5 is a series of missions that take place on the Savage Coast, go ahead and do those whenever. Issue 6 is a series of missions that take place in Egypt after the main story missions in Egypt. Issue 7 is a series of missions in Transylvania that take place after the main story missions in Transylvania, and arguably ties into the ongoing story.
Issue 8 is considered by many to be not all that great, as it doesn't really bring any new story content to the game, rather it contains "scenarios" which are basically big grinding-machines for you to get more SP to spend on new things to spend SP on. You will have to participate in scenarios a bit to advance the storyline after Transylvania but you don't have to buy Issue 8 to make it (it just takes longer because you only have one scenario you can access instead of three, since they're on cooldown. I recommend doing scenarios as early as possible to build up the new currency to progress in the story).
Issue 9 is due out this month, and obviously is going to be taking us to Tokyo and advancing the main story.
EDIT: The sidestories are just that, missions that aren't necessary but flesh out the world more. They're all investigation missions, so keep that in mind if you don't like doing those. There's one mission in New York, one in Egypt and two in Transylvania.

I guess my other question is, "What should I be doing at this point and how should I be doing it?". What's the state of dungeons, gear upgrades, etc...?
Dungeons are cool but gear progressing flows pretty naturally through the story missions anyway. Dungeons are more like a way to get ahead of the curve until you hit the end-game stuff.

Cool. I'm sure I'll hit each once to see the story and then keep going...
I had such hopes that Tokyo would drop today. *long sigh*
So, NM Dungeon DPS. Tell me what kind of numbers I want to be looking for in my gear. Like, how much hit should I get? How much pen? Attacking rating = no such thing as too much? Purple glyphs and signets ain't exactly easy to get so I want to be sure to focus on the right shit before slotting and upgrading.
We still need the finale to Whispering Tide before Tokyo hits anyway.
Anyway, 650 hit, 900-1.1k pen, whatever's left in crit power. If you're doing an EF rotation, put crit rating on your builder and crit power on your EF weapon. If your EF weapon is your builder (This generally really only happens with melee setups) then put crit power on it.
Laceration is probably the most important signet to get. I advise putting it in the head slot just so you only have to piece together one of those. For weapons you then want either Fury, Aggression, or Abuse. Aggression and Abuse have basically the same utility; Fury has the benefit of being predictable. I prefer Fury in my builder (Useless if you burn the boss in one rotation, but then, you don't really need the extra DPS at that point anyway) and Aggression on my offhand weapon. You should definitely be able to put together some green signets and maybe a couple blues pretty easily. While not the best option for absolute maximum DPS, if you're relying on focus-centric EF builds, signets of cleaving are an excellent choice because they're generally cheaper and will work with a larger number of builds. This is pretty important when you're first setting up your gear and are constrained by bullion (and probably Pax well). Stick violence signets in if you have them, they're still probably the lowest priority thing to work on.
Diminishing returns on attack rating are overblown (using the Coney Island Band for DPS only works out because of force crits), but glyphs are still a better early investment.
I guess I'm still trying to figure out my actives/passives for my DPS, nevermind the gear, but I felt like the gear was the part that was more important.

On the forums someone... Joel? A dev, at any rate, posted saying that it wouldn't be out this week, "for reasons beyond our control", and there'd be more information in the upcoming letter.
On a slightly related note, I've been playing a lot of Marvel Heroes lately and it's incredible what a difference actual active development can make. There have been more special events in the last couple of months in Marvel than in TSW since launch!
It's kinda sad, because I love TSW but holy shit they need an awful lot more content, they need to vastly accelerate their turnaround speed, they need a buttload of bugfixes... and they need to not waste all their damn time on fiddling with EF and StD and bursts and whatever other skills they want to dramatically change for no real benefit.
I tried to redeem my key to join that ARG that TSW gave me a year of access to. The site just broke I guess? The 'Redeem' button doesn't actually do anything.
Fuck it, never mind then.

COME FORTH, AMATERASU! - Switch Friend Code SW-5465-2458-5696 - Twitch
Tokyo will be split into several issues: Issue 9 will bring us Kaidan, the first part of the AEGIS system, and new NPC's/missions.
Issue 10 will bring the rest of the Kaidan zone, as well as a new (magical) Aux weapon, a new scenario, and an expansion of the AEGIS system. (Thinking this will be the ability to put AEGIS shields on ourselves.)
Issue 11 will bring the Orochi Tower, a new dungeon, a new lair (including a revamp of the lair system, whatever that means), and another Aux weapon (...a second one so soon after 10?).
Lore collectors: There will be lore, as well as (anti)lore- black honeycombs(?) from a second voice, offering a second point of view.
Not in the letter, but I've heard that there is a hotkey/system to enable us to switch our AEGIS weapon controllers on the fly- including during combat. This way we shouldn't be screwed if we're attacked by something with a shield that we're not equipped to deal with.
The black lore is from the Black Signal rather than the BEEEEEEEEEEES.
You have 2 AEGIS weapon slots which can hold 3 AEGISs each. The default keybinds to cycle through them are 9 and 0. Doing so disables your skills for 3? or so seconds. (Source: TestLive)
How do you acquire and upgrade AEGISs? I am worried they're going to make you spend AP on them, as if there wasn't enough things to sink AP into while my SP sits around unused.
So what did the dial land on in terms of EF/StD nerfs?
EF works exactly as it does now, but all abilities which used to "trick" it to gain double the effect will now just advance the counter by one instead. Fire in the Hole being the main one obviously, but also turrets, drones and crimson theatre as other examples.

Oh so they didn't change their mind another half dozen times?

I don't know how they'll be acquired, but they're levelled up by killing things. Last I saw (though it might be out of date now?) when you kill Aegis mobs they drop an xp item, and when you pick it up your aegis stuff gets levelled up. Hopefully they've changed it from loot to just happening on kill, because that seems less silly. Either way, no materials, AP, or anything else required.
And the next issue is going to have a new type of scenario! Thank christ, I don't mind anything about the current scenarios except that doing them thousands of times is mind numbing.
They did change the experience acquisition a bit. Previously experience would only drop if the mob dropped an item too, currently on TestLive they can drop experience separate from regular items now. Of course, that could have been tweaked just for the sake of TestLive and may not actually apply to the Live version.

Cool. I'm sure I'll hit each once to see the story and then keep going...
Which then tends to become obsolete once you hit the next area and get some drops.
Don't worry about the issues/sidestories yet. Finish the main game, then think about them.
And I don't think they've confirmed Issue 9 being out this month. Though I have been to Tokyo on Testlive and I am excited.
EDIT: Holy shit. I am getting stomped by this Ancient Tomb Guardian. Like this isn't even funny. : P
Popular opinion is that the release of Issue 9 will coincide with the Whispering Tide's final phase starting, or it ending.

Unfortunately it's a story mission. I'm reading up on some tactics and hopefully I'll get past it tonight.
EDIT: Got it. The guardian has some pathing issues that can be used against it.
