Yeah, for anybody who hasn't figured this out yet, Meld canisters can be "heard" like enemies, except with the bright orange-yellow line. Also, once you get close enough, you can see the time remaining, which seems to be pretty random; I've had missions where they were all set to 4-5 turns, and other times when the first one I've come across after 2-3 turns still had another 6 turns to go.

Personally, I don't mind the time-limited mechanic at all. I've had Meld show up on everything but 2-3 missions so far, and it's a good way to encourage people to be less conservative while also giving them a reward for pushing forward. I expect that by the time I start getting ahead of the curve, I'll have plenty of Meld for making a kickass death unit. The only way I have trouble with getting to Meld canisters is if I play super-safe, so there's a definite risk/reward mechanic there.

Also, I love the fact that MECs allow for a great way to "dispose" of excess class types. Game gave me something like 4 snipers when I had only one of everything else and two assaults; a quick chop-job later and VOILA, one giant robot suit guy and one less useless sniper!

Fun fact: Zhang can be turned into a MEC!

Also I have so many Heavy soldiers right now jeez, I need a Support! My starting lady got unlucky.

Overall I'm quite enjoying the changes/additions that come with EW, feels different enough to feel fresh.

It's cool, you get a bonus to aim because of being a sniper... if you stand still.

It's just hard to convince a guy to stand still when he's a giant robot and can punch holes in walls.

He literally can't hear your orders over the sound of how awesome he is.

Since I'm a fan of the little touches that make up a game, I couldn't help but notice from gameplay footage that MEC troopers have a metallic edge to their voices, and I love it.

Meld canisters blowing up before you even see them is some serious bullshit. Not a fan at all. At least let us see their timer OR a general location on the map/FOW. You'll get occasional hints like you would alien location but it's not frequent enough.

Definitely modding the game so meld dropping enemies drop more.

Explore more, explore faster. They're supposed to push you to act unsafely.

If he ran into an ethereal it would have wiped his squad. They have 20 HP, 40 defense, with 60% critical immunity, 100 accuracy, and do 5 base damage. They can't be flanked so the only way to win is if you get 7 total hits off all max damage to do 21 damage. At maximum you have 10 total attacks because even with full cover he is guaranteed to hit with psionics once per round. Fewer if you get rifted(so you can't group up). Fewer still if a squadie misses twice in a row (as the rebound will kill them)

I punched a car to death by accident and took 6 damage out of my 12 HP from the explosion; the MEC responded with "no major damage".

No, the Uber has 25 HP and 150 willpower(120 on normal). The "normal suckers" you find in UFO's are "Outsiders" and have 3 to 5 HP depending on difficulty. Ethereals don't show up as the "normal suckers in UFO's" until those UFO's are also carrying sectopods.

Apparently, the version of EW that GMG sold me is a version that unlocks on Friday, despite the fact that I'm in the UK and it comes out here today.

So I'm not getting a key until Friday, despite the fact that if I'd just pre-ordered from Steam instead, I could be playing it now.

Well, at least I saved an extra 25%...

I am thoroughly in love with MEC Troopers. Like, seriously. They kind of break Normal (I'm really bad at strategy).
Just did the one Newfoundland mission, with the Chrysalid "hive". Brought 2 MECs with me.

One of them I've had for a while. She's named Rosie. She's the best. She punches things. One time she punched a Chrysalid into a forklift which exploded and killed another Chrysalid.

She can also fly. Bradbutts (my current favorite) said "hey, hit the button on the ship" so she flew up top and hit the button in one turn. We were supposed to run away, but she stayed to punch another pair of Chrysalids.

My second MEC has the flamethrower. He got to cook Chrysalids. The fear mechanic made me cackle with glee.

Its to do with the way the "name pools" work. Some countries get their own pool, others draw from the pool of the nation they're originally from. So Canadian names are drawn from the British, American or French pools, IIRC. Likewise South Africa gets names from the African and Dutch pools, although Australia gets its own pool which makes no sense whatsoever as it just seems to be the British pool with an unusually high number of people named Ned, Kelly and Bruce.
