Probably everyone knows this already, but I just found it and thought it was interesting. List of things Vaal Orbs do.
The between one and all items in a map become corrupted seems pretty ridiculous.
So Ice Nova is getting a second microtransaction skin.
Meaning there'll be a unique skin for each person using the skill, which is cool.
Wonder if it's purely a Vaal skill cash-in, or if it's getting a boost soon?

According to the wiki that corruption is +1 to the max level. So you might be able to level it up to 4 the hard way now. I'm not sure.

That'd be nice, other reports say it's just +1 gem level. So it would have to have been max level already to get it above the cap. It seems likely to be this way, since some report of it de-leveling a level 20 gem to 19 and then having to level the gem to 20 again.
Man, maybe I should have kept my second one now instead of selling it to Heff for a steal =P
At least I'm that much closer to a level 3. I just need a damn +2fire +1gem sceptre now.

First character I got to merciless, I'm at act 2 now, is a groundslam marauder. 2.2k hp and 1.6k dps on heavy strike for single target, 1.4k aoe dps with ground slam. Doesn't die that often though the HP dances all over the place. Some bosses so far were hard, I died to weaver 2 or 3 times, bandits so far were easy, vaal area bosses are gg sometimes. Had two twin bosses, one that summoned like 4 different totems and threw lightning traps and the other time both summoned swords.

I started playing this game last week, went in with minimal planning, and managed to get to endgame more or less fine. I suspect the vast majority of my woes (mostly concentrated around corrupted area bosses and dominus) would have been solved by simple things such as not hanging on to shitty gear because it happens to have the socket layouts I need.
(I was the one that suggested summoner, incidently)
It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

Hmm, I suspect something was wrong with your EK Scion. Either poor gemming or poor passive build. EK gets really impressive damage as it gets leveled higher. I think my EK Scion from last league had considerably higher damage and I was running sub-par links.
If you want tanky and damage, hmm. You could do some kind of build that uses lots of endurance charges. Give me a little input on what you like to do and I'll try to theorycraft something for you:
Ranged or Melee?
If Ranged: Caster or Bow/Wand or Spectral Throw?
If Melee: Shield, 2-hander, dual-wield?
Is there anything specific you enjoy (like a skill of something)?

Endurance charges are great, when I have them up on my Infernal Blow char he can stay up pretty good. They don't last long enough though even with added duration. I'm not sure what to go with. Summoner sounds appealing because its something I haven't done yet. Any kind of spell might be fun too. Haven't done traps either. I don't know. I'm looking for something where I don't have to party to do everything because sometimes its hard to get a party that wants to kill the same bandits.
My EK scion could solo all the bandits at least. My infernal blow just drops like a chump before I can kill off all the followers. I think its mainly the exploding arrow people.
Looks like Shadow is the new recommended EK person. Not sure I want to do EK again though.
My own time trying to do a serious summoner went great until I hit act 3 bosses & a big fat brick wall. The final boss in the game in particular can be rather painful as a summoner.
I haven't played summoner since the last patch but I found that if I ran purity and grace and kept bone offering running during any difficult encounters then I usually wouldn't lose any zombies. I was also running two seething flasks of animation, so if you do run into something nasty you can spam those and heal your zombies up real quick. Rolling those can be a pain so I'd try to buy them, they are easily worth 3 chaos each since they make life so much easier. I didn't spec into necro aegis since I was playing in hardcore and really needed the defensive stats on my character, so if you picked that up it should be very hard to lose any minions along with the other stuff I mentioned.

Well, in the case of a summoner, since minion-boosting stuff is basically only on uniques (though apparently helmets can get a mod to increase the level of minion gems), shitty gear only leaves you fragile, your minions are still fine. That said, when I got a bunch of rares thrown at me after joining the guild and doing some map parties, I had to make due for a bit until I RNGed through enough chromatics to get my new duds to desired socket colors.

Is EK CoC viable in HC. I kind of want to go with CI too, but I've never actually tried it.

I finally figured out why I was having trouble using alterations on ambush strongboxes. Apparently the range at which you can use a wisdom scroll or transmutation orb on a box is just slightly longer than the range that is acceptable for alterations. So yeah, just stand closer if you have the same problem!

Anyone else annoyed when trying to click on a monster near the box and you keep clicking on the huge box sign and getting box is locked? Is that really needed? Can't they make it unclickable?

The 1.1.0 patch had a bug that increased the damage of Fireblast by roughly 100% (I'm not sure on exact numbers). So, seeing as flameblast was getting a lot more use (of course), instead of simply reverting it, they buffed the pre 1.1 damage by 48%. So I think now it's doing about 33% less damage than the bugged version. While a considerable nerf, it's still doing very good damage and the quality bonus is great too.

also, what the FUCK, if you come across a bladeback guardian in invasion, RUN. It must be bugged right now or it's VASTLY overtuned or it's not suppose to be in low level areas or something. When you get close to it it starts casting incinerate or something in all direction over a MASSIVE range pretty much one shotting you or your party, pretty much impossible for melee to kill it. jesus chrsit scared the shit out of me, luckily I was on only a level 4 character or I'd be demanding a revival, fuck that.

I'm guessing Vaal Caress isn't worth much of anything but since it's new, you might be able to get something decent for it before prices solidify. Vaal gems aren't really something you base a build around and the other stats aren't really good enough for an endgame build.
Also, another downside on those gloves - it's going to be hard to really take advantage of both Vaal bonuses simultaneously. For the +Level bonus, you want a Vaal skill that scales heavily on LV, but for the Onslaught bonuses, you want a Vaal skill with a low soul count so that you can use it frequently. Generally, the heavy LV-scaling gems are magic-oriented, whereas the low soul gems are all physically oriented.
I believe you could do that. However, keep in mind that when you make a kill, you only get 1 soul total (which is then randomly assigned) so if you have more than one Vaal gem, it'll take even longer to activate each one.
