Zinogre's head is a wonderful pellet shot magnet. A good pellet bowgun, pellet up and some other skills and it's hilarious at how much face wrecking you can do.
It's even been toned down a bit compared to how effective it was in P3, but still a formidable and an interesting way to fight zinogre.
That is actually a pretty good idea. My only bowgun with decent pellet capability is an HBG right now, though, and HBGing dual Zin sounds positively miserable. Let's see what the Wyverian artisan can suggest in terms of pellet-heavy LBGs...

Actually I think most Zin pelleters do use HBG. The Pecco one usually.
The thing about Zinogre's head being a pellet magnet is it literally is a magnet, so you just point the barrel in the general direction and shoot. Most of the time you don't even bother going first-person to aim.
Yeah, I decided to try it, with that very same HBG, which is the only pelleter I have. Ouch. The seeker balls are a huge pain when you have no mobility at all.
The horns do break amazingly quickly, though. I imagine it's a matter of getting used to dodging the Zin with this slow-ass weapon.
Started messing around with random weapons tonight.
First I used Athena's ASS to make a Pellet/Spread Up (30% pellet shot/spread arrow damage), Attack Up (L), and Evasion+1 armor.
Then I made Midnight Farflight, the green narga bow. Ends up with decent raw at 288, 40% affinity, and Spread3 stage one (no charge), and Spread4 stage two (one charge). Can't tell if it's doing similar or better damage than elemental bows yet. Still feel like time to kill with these things is way too long in this game compared to anything else.
After that farmed a few items to finish a Precision Pico Peco for to use my new pellet armor with a HBG. Found the damage alright, nothing fantastic. Gameplay was boring as hell until I just started saying fuck it and crouch firing. That mode is stupid fun. Don't feel like it does enough damage to compensate for killing yourself at G Rank though. Not sure I'd run HBG much solo since crouch fire is what I like about its moveset, but removing the limiter for Wyvern Fire in groups might make me run it, especially if I change pellet for other shots.
Gott' a love how this series is the game that keeps on giving. So much shit to get to minimally change your playstyle when you're not abusing the handful of god tier min-max getups.
This is getting frustrating. I went back to one of my Moga 2* quests to clear out that list, and all I need to do is capture a Great Jaggi.
At no point does this one want to start limping, and I keep ending up killing it. Are there some more subtle signs I need to be looking for so I know when to set the trap?
Also, any tips on building traps? 200z for a trap tool seems pretty pricey this early on.
Yeah, if that's the case then you might want to try out perception. 10 points of it gives you the capture guru armor skill; a monster that is paintballed and ready to capture will flash on the map.
Wait til it's weak enough to flash, then either drop a trap or wait for it to move into another area, and you're good to go.
As for trap tools, the shopkeeper does do discounts periodically, should be able to snag some cheaper if you keep an eye out for bargain days. Later on you can also trade commodities for shock or pitfall traps with the Argosy Captain.
Another option is to not chase after it so fast when it leaves an area. When it gets low on health, it will go back to a specific area (looks like a nest) and fall asleep. When it does that, it's always ready to be captured. I'm still not comfortable laying down a trap even when they are limping, because it's possible they are about to leave the area and not run into the trap.
The game should provide you with one trap and more than enough tranq bombs on any mission you need to trap a monster, so affording them is not too important.
Also, the only time a monster limps to show it is cappable is when transitioning between zones; if it is acting particularly fast or slow while fighting, it's simply in rage mode or tired, which are not correlated at all with being cappable.
If a monster leaves the area limping, it is reasonable to set a trap in the new area immediately and expect it to run into it (if you position yourself with the trap between you guys). Two tranq bombs should be enough. If both tranq bombs hit and it isn't capped, it might have recovered slightly (possibly from sleeping). HIT IT IMMEDIATELY AND QUICKLY. If you do enough damage while it is trapped and tranq'd twice, even *after* tranqing it, it will be captured (I've capped a couple Ludroth's like that). Then enjoy your shiny rewards.

In MHFU at least most monsters began to enter rage mode much quicker/easier when they were low on health. So if it starts going into rage mode every time you tap it, ease off it for a bit and wait for it to leave the area to see if it is limping.

Bargain days = Argosy in town. Not sure if that applies to Granny Go-To or not, but it's rock-solid for Gal With the Goods.

It does apply to Granny Go-To as well.
Mostly just huntin' monsters.

...is there any reliable way to get Dragonbone Relics? I find myself in need of three of the damn things and, while Kiranico says they can drop in Area 4 of the Tundra, my current experiments are failing to confirm this.

Do an HR Tundra hunt, like the Great Baggi, make sure you eat for explorer. Do it in the Village and not port, to make killing the Baggi easier for less of a waste of your time.

They're hidden area only, right? You'll want to activate Explorer.
Also, there's an open gather point on the Tower, if you've gotten that far.
Alternatively just do Harvest Tour: Tundra. Eat for explorer, wait the two minutes or so for the paw pass, exit the mission. Repeat. Depending on your gear that's like faster at high rank, definitely quicker than killing Great Baggi or Lagombi at G rank.
The tower gathering point isn't Dragonbone Relic, it's Elder Dragonbone. Easy to suicide farm if you don't feel like fighting Gold Ian, Silver Rath, or Lucent Narga though and need some.

I've got to run a few errands, but in roughly an hour I'm free for a while and going to make a lobby. I'll post again or edit this when I start it. Just a heads up if anyone else is free today and wants to run whatever multi.
Thanks for the tips everybody. I started stocking up on trap tools when I see them on sale to keep a little supply on hand, and I did manage to get the capture. I think what I wasn't understanding was that limping only happens when they run away. I was killing them fast enough that they didn't get the chance to limp away. Its not half as big of a deal now anyway since I figured out how to make some extra traps instead of depending on the one from the supply box entirely.
I took on my first Quropeco last night and barely escaped alive. Finished with five minutes left on the timer and there's no way I could have taken another hit and lived. That asshole is hard to keep track of if you run out of paintballs. I won't be coming with only a couple of those again either. Some of the mechanics are really sinking in after I pieced it together that green sharpness could hit its wings, but yellow could not. Now I just want a weapon with more than a sliver of green.

There's an armor skill that prevents you from bouncing off (you'll still do low damage... but that's because the hitbox itself takes low damage regardless, no matter your sharpness). Some weapons have it on their attacks as well - switch-axe sword mode and long sword spirit combo can't bounce no matter what.

Well... there is, but Fencing (Mind's Eye) is only available on G-rank armor. Unless you have access to a Sword Saint Earring, that's not happening.
I didn't know Kirin was in MH4. You get to ride it around rodeo style like I always wanted to in MH1. Aesthetically Kirin is still my favorite monster.
Well, with those Dragonbone relics ad some adding up, I made myself a clownsuit with Pellet Up, Evasion +2, and Dragon Resist +15 (for a total of 25), for my Peco HBG. And with that I'll farm dual Stygians - tomorrow, though, what with it being 2AM right now and all. Already done it once today, and man, it may take a bit more than just going in with the Graf (poison forever), but you break everything except the tail without even aiming to. It's pretty great.
Would be nice, but it would require giving up Dragon Resist, if Athena's ASS is correct. And I think I'd rather deal with the recoil than with getting hideously damaged by the projectiles and getting Dragon plagued every time the monsters look at me funny :P.
Though dragonblight is moot if you're shooting pellets.
...I have almost 300 hours in this game and I was still convinced that Dragon blight worked like in Tri, sending your affinity straight to shit and murdering your gun damage completely. Your comment made me check becase it seemed to make no sense, and thus I have learned a new thing.
Starting some new Sword 'n Shield lines and been running a lot of Pellet 2 and 3 to mess around with my Pellet/Spread Up, Attack Up (L), and Evasion gear. Those two shots are the only thing coming close to the dual sword crit with elemental weapon light show. There's a lot of sparkles; it's glorious.
More than likely. Glad I've got a year or a little more than that to start a 3DS fund since 4U is all I really need for it. I could never play another game on the thing and feel the purchase was worth it knowing, just like TriU, 4U is going to give me an embarrassing number of hours played. Since I've had TriU if I play a game it's TriU or a fighter 99% of the time. The amount of entertainment per dollar spent on this franchise is basically unmatched.
Maybe Hell will truly freeze over too, we'll get a MH edition 3DS stateside. Doubtful we will, but it'd be nice to have that option if there's no ridiculous 3DS sale before 4U's release.
