I think (judging from the ages of the children) they just missed that generation. I feel like I'm part of the generation that really grew up with this stuff, and my oldest is 6. I don't know if the Japanese usually have kids older/younger than in the US though, so that could make a difference too.
So there is actually a criminal investigation currently undergoing which prompted their very abrupt closure of the service. I have seen people express disbelief that Nintendo would have acquired information about what was taking place over their service without illegitimately "Listening in" on what people were saying. This may well explain how the company knew about it - it's likely that the authorities contacted Nintendo per routine during their investigation, and the nature of the crime was made known to them through official channels.
A sordid tale. Hopefully the company can come up with an improved system that more effectively combats such predatory behaviour, while still providing a featureset that gives the rest of us a fun method of communication.

But apparently that was not enough this time. If they can still add failsafes to it in a meaningful way, I'm all for it.
What kind of failsafe would have stopped this?
All they can do is increase the password strength on the feature and make it mandatory (thus pissing off every adult who owns one of these devices). The thing is you cannot stop the user being a ignorant/stupid/malicious. All you can do is put passwords on shit and verify what little information you have, which is what they've already done. You can't stop that guy making the password '1111' or writing on a sticker stuck the bottom of the device or telling his kids what it is. Software/machines can't fully validate human interaction with said software/machine. If it was possible then banks would have implemented it ages ago and modern day DRM would be ironclad.
What I want to know is: does that 12 year old own a cellphone?
This is Japan, I think you're assigned one when you are born.
In other news, started playing (yeah, I shouldn't have done that) Sticker Star and the hammer timing is really starting to annoy me. I've gotten "Nice!" once, and I can't seem to figure out when I should be hitting A to hit multiple goombas. The boot stomping? I've got that down easy. And now I just found a sign that tells me I can avoid enemy attacks the same way. Thanks sign! That would have been helpful about 10 battles ago and before I fought Bowser Jr.
So, any tips from those of you who've played it through?
I probably should have read the manual, but I just threw it in my 3DS and brought it to work for when I'm waiting for things to install/upload/download/etc.
I was in the mood for a fairy-tale-esque rpg (yeah, specific I know) and realized I own relatively few Fantasy themed RPGs and the one I do are really, really hardcore and not at all whimsical enough. Hopefully Bravely Default fills that niche for me when it finally comes out in NA.
Also, at some point I turned around and realized that the 3DS is my primary gaming platform. The number of games I have for this system is just unreal for me. I have around 50 unique games for this thing (counting retail, virutal console and DSi Ware here) and I only got it as a christmas present last year. I mean, I bought a pair of cargo pants specifically so I could comfortably carry my XL with me absolutely everywhere (carrying case built right into my pants, guys!)
Pretty much, this thing is the most awesome.

Just took stock. It's more like 45, but that's still impressive. A full 25 of those are retail games. I've been good about taking advantage of sales though, so it hasn't cost me nearly as much as simple math might indicate. I'll hit the big 50 before spring of next year I'm sure. Virtual Console games on E-Shop are like popcorn. I just absently consume them because I can buy at least one a paycheck that I want without breaking the bank and there's enough of a backlog there that I can find at least one that I still want. It's because of this that I've almost beaten Super Mario Land 2 for the first time.

I'm super excited for Bravely Default. Why this isn't a straight up Final Fantasy game, who knows, but it looks really fun. Hope that collector's edition comes to the US.

I'm guessing it's because they couldn't put lightning in it
Not a lot, but I've actually been trying to play/beat games as I get them. I was doing well until this past spring, when I acquired a few games and started playing Harvest Moon. It set me back quite a bit and now I have 5 games unfinished (Dark Moon, Sticker Star, Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus, and Heroes of Ruin).

I skipped out on Pokeymans Y, which I was almost going to buy, but then had a sudden change of heart and did a barrel roll for Star Fox 64 3D instead. And I recently picked up New Super Mario Bros. Two, too. I must be on a serious nostalgia trip, here!
Spent some of my fan club coins on Metroid, even, heaven help me...
Any love for Star Fox here? Remember that silly LCD Star Fox game watch? I earned that with the cereal promotion, then lost it on my schoolyard playground. When I came back, some 20min. later, it was naturally gone, gone gone... never to be seen again. I guess I did not deserve it.
I look forward to seeing Skeldare show up and drop some real Nintendo cred that puts me to shame.
The craziest thing about my collection is that I have beaten nearly all of it because it pops out every time I have a free moment. Waiting for a ride, bathroom, lunch at work, before I go to bed, when my girlfriend is watching boring reality tellivision shows, while I have Game Grumps, Gamecenter CX or Co-Optional Podcast playing in the background on my Wii U...WHAT MADNESS HATH NINTENDO WROUGHT! *Crash of lightning*

That's nothing. I have 72 physical DS games, and my physical Xbox 360 collection is closing in on 100...
Jesus. And I thought I had a problem...;-)
According to my Backloggery I have 697 games total, and that's not including my massive, 100+ Steam collection. Game collecting is my hobby and.. uh... it may have gotten a little out of control.

I don't know if I have that much.
Off the top of my head I have about 30 physical 3DS games, 14 digital, over a dozen VC games, of course the 10 GBA games, several DSIWare and 3DS eShop games... Not to mention the countless DS games. If I was at home I could verify all this...
Edit: forgot the NES ambassador games, so it's more like 22 or so VC games.

I'm just getting started, only one physical 3DS game (Pokemon) and one eshop title. (Super Mario Land 2).
Thinking about getting Pilotwings next. It's available for dirt cheap now and I like flying around!
If it's 10 bucks, it'll come out to about $2/hr. by the time you're done with it.
I have nearly 30 hours into that game. It was my first and only 3DS game at launch, but still.
I was being a little facetious. I spent about 10 hours and did everything I wanted to do with it. It's not a big game, but getting all the medals can take a bunch of time. It's really good, I just wanted more.
At least it didn't overstay its welcome, as many games do.

It was a lot of fun for sure. If it had more areas than just Wuhu Island, and more modes (waypoint races maybe) it would have been pretty great.

I thought Pilotwings was great, just maybe not as a full priced purchase. I got it for $20 and felt it was money well spent, but at full price I'm not so sure I would've been so happy about it.
I'm there with the guys with 30+ retail. I count about 34 white boxes right now, might have some more elsewhere.
I also have 26 digital games on the 3DS (VC and eShop) and that doesn't include the 20 Ambassador games. It does include digital Animal Crossing, Ace Attorney, and Unchained Blades.
Also if I have 18 DS games per shelf and there are about 7 shelves full...that's 126 DS games.
Doesn't look very good to me, but I think it's a bad trailer. The "high quality" CGI reminds me of PS1 Final Fantasy scenes. The music is super uninteresting and plodding.
Also I just had to sigh when the text started coming up. "Endless vengeance." What the heck does that mean?
Has the bad guy done something so heinous that it requires an amount of vengeance which is endless? Does he just never give up and keeps committing atrocities that require more vengeance, no matter how much I get? Am I caught up in a struggle where I get vengeance and then the other guys get vengeance for that and it just keeps going back and forth? Do I get vengeance that is so damn vengeful that I never need to seek vengeance again, thus it being endless?
Why is this text supposed to excite me? Do kids see these trailers and go "ooh, vengeance, now that is an intriguing concept, one not seen often in video games. I can't wait to seek vengeance, especially the endless kind!"
I'm tired of that sort of generic stuff. SOULS OF THE DEAD, DARKNESS AND HATRED SURROUND YOU. SEEK THE ONE WHO BEARS THE MARK, FOR HE SHALL REDEEM THE GLORY.
