Wait a sec...((looks at calendar))...OH GAWD. I should've bought this damn thing a month ago! How the hell am I gonna beat Mario U by Friday with SO?!
Really easily. I bought it yesterday and we (my SO and me) beat the main story in one sitting. While that isn't including every level, and we stopped trying for certain star coins about 80% of the way in, the game still felt very short.
I feel like the Wii U is basically the Gamecube 2. Outsold by the competition, under-appreciated by the masses. And while some may be content with it as their only console, most gamers see it as a secondary console next to their PlayStation or XBox, to be dusted off every 6 months or so when an awesome 1st party title comes out. Honestly, that's good enough for me. 1 or 2 games a year that I just gotta play that I can't get anywhere else is enough to justify it's spot under my TV.
But some people need it to be "more" than that. They need to reframe all the negatives as positives. They need to make positive comparisons based on skewed logic ("OMG, WiiU is cheaper than a PS4 and has more games available." No shit, son.)
Since Gamecube was my favorite console... I'm okay with this.
I'll admit that it's not the best position for Nintendo as a company, but if we get even a fraction of the great games that GC had, I'll be very happy.

I can't believe I never realized this... but both the GameCube and Wii U came out on November 18th in North America. So it's really the birthday for both consoles today.
Edit: And tomorrow is the Wii's birthday.

I bought a PS4 last week, beat Killzone, played Contrast, Resogun, and Flower. Then, I kinda forgot about everything I did in Killzone and played Lego City Undercover, Batman Origins, and Super Luigi. So, I'm happy with the Wii-u and twiddling my thumbs on my "new shiny better system". Oh, and if I never see the hbao god rays again I'll die happy.
God I wish I had your time. Full time work, married, two kids, one on the way, work to do on the house, among other things make it so there are times I don't get to game for three four days. I'm still working to 100% Lego City.
I planned the time off thinking I would be gloriously enthralled by my new system. Normally, I work two jobs 5-7 days a week, so it's pretty rare for me to get this much playtime in. That and I only sleep 4 hours a day.
That being said, I'm not knocking the new systems but if people think it's a gigantic revolution and you'll forget all about your insignificant Wii-U then I think they'll be a little shocked on how little new games systems actually deliver. If you love god rays and every game going to exorbitant lengths to show you them then you'll be happy.
So, talk of disappointing game lineups should be spread around to everyone. The wii-u has the advantage of being out a little longer, so if you're jumping in now, it's actually a great time to buy one.
I think that might be the point that people were trying to get at, it seems like there's a double standard between insulting the Wii U's launch lineup and ignoring the similar lack of games for rival consoles.
I'm not saying that Nintendo couldn't have taken better advantage of their year as being the sole next gen system. I think it's just strange that people seem to have collective memory loss surrounding the first year of pretty much every system, and if I'm going to be an early adopter I'd much rather have a trickle of charming and unique platformers, beautiful updates and sequels to beloved classics, unexpected delights, and consistently great polish across the majority of titles, than a trickle of brown grimdark shooters and "realistic" racing games.
I'm not begrudging anyone who disagrees though. I like platformers and adventure games. Other people like first person shooters, I've been super happy with the Wii U because I've gotten WWHD, NSMBU, NSLU, Rayman, Pikmin, Wonderful 101, Duck Tales, Disney Infinity, Earthbound, and Lego City and I still haven't had enough time to complete them all, I'm super excited that over the next few months I'm going to get two more great looking platformers as well.
As someone that wants to see Nintendo succeed, I'd like to see them do more to advertise the Wii U (not that I'd be able to tell anyways as I don't have cable) I'd like to see more third party support, but as a gamer that owns the console, I just want them to keep doing what they're doing because it's been a year of fantastic games that have come out before I can even finish the previous ones. (Admittedly the first half of the year was.. Not good though)
For people complaining about double standards, the ps4 has been out four days and the xbox one negative four. The wii u has been out over a year. They may not be exclusive but they're a lot more games I'm excited for in the upcoming year compared to 0 for the wii u. This is all personal preference but I'm guessing the other consoles' first years will be a bit more successful.
I'm pretty much the other way around. I don't really know much of what's coming out for the PS4 that I want, outside of FFXV and KHIII some time in the next decade. But I do know I want a slew of Wii U games in the next year.
That said, I suppose I'm in a bit of an unfair position. I haven't really done my homework on PS4 games, and I don't care much about games that are coming to the other systems that are also on the Wii U, so I'm sort of in the dark.
I do know that I will be getting a PS4 at some point, when I know more about it. Some time next year, I think. I don't imagine I'll be aiming for one this Christmas.

True, but that's ignoring the fact that this entire year has been filled with complaints about the Wii U's lack of games. I'm not saying that we should be comparing the library of the current Wii U to the PS4 or XB1 (Though people debating which system to purchase this holiday certainly should) I'm saying that comparing the launch lineup of the Wii U to the PS4 and XB1 it's hard to differentiate that much. One or two exclusives and a handful of third party titles that are also available on previous gen systems (albeit lacking a few features). The double standard part comes from the fact that people were using that fact to illustrate how doomed Nintendo is but aren't applying the same treatment to the other consoles. Now I'm not saying the PS4 or XB1 are doomed, I'm saying that's just how the first year of consoles go.
No matter what all the systems are going to have a decent sized library of games. When you factor in the fact that most people have multiple systems they can and do play games on, it's also likely that all the systems will have enough games to fill up the entirety people's free time. (Unless my free time is drastically out of whack with the majority of society). The style of game people like to play will have a huge bearing on which system they prefer, and the types of games I like are going to be far more successful and prevalent on the Wii U than either competitor.
There are exactly zero games on either other system I care about. I like the idea of the PS4 and xB1 they both look like stellar systems, but so far the games don't interest me at all. But I completely acknowledge that might not be true for other people. What gets frustrating is when people use their own personal preference to justify empirical statements on the quality of a consoles game lineup.
Yes, Nintendo hasn't sold as many Wii U's as they should.
Yes, third party support has been lacking and will likely continue to degrade unless Nintendo comes up with some magic solution (but I doubt one exists, seeing as "success" wasn't enough of a justification last generation)
But that doesn't mean the Wii U sucks, or the first year has sucked, because for many people, myself obviously included, it has been awesome.
Went out and bought a Wii U Zelda bundle tonight, as well as preordering the new Mario game. One huge problem though, can't get my system to connect to my router. Did the manually enter settings trick, no dice. Reset my router, no dice. Turned the security off, nadda.

It's been pretty much a constant for the past few weeks, especially since Watch Dogs and Drive Club were delayed, that "the PS4 has no games"
The difference between it and the Wii U on the hardware level is that a ton of people still bought the PS4
The PS4 has a ton of great games at launch just like the Wii U did - they are just prettier versions of existing games, though
The Wii U didn't have the "prettier" factor going for them, which was somewhat of a strike against
There's nothing wrong with offering up cross-gen titles at launch (PS2, PS3 and Xbox 360 did it and it was great) but there should be some reason to buy the new console and play those new games there. For PS4 (and the Xbox One later this week), there is - playing AC4 and Battlefield 4 and Need for Speed Rivals on a next-gen console is a markedly different experience than on existing hardware
But there was no benefit to playing Assassin's Creed III, Black Ops 2, Batman: Arkham City, Mass Effect 3, Darksiders II on a Wii U at the time of launch unless you just didn't have the means to play them before. They weren't prettier and were, in some cases, worse.
For me the new systems, this one included, is all about exclusives. You certainly could play ac4, bd4, and nfs but the content isn't any different. You get a pretty experience full of god rays but nothing more than that. In BF4's case, it's a worse experience right now with fewer players and an unstable connection.
But, all the systems have great games to play. I can't even imagine the kind of game player that looks at this system and find absolutely nothing. That's got to be one stubborn and focused game diet.

Considering the current arguments here, let me phrase my comment thusly:
I think the Wii U has had a decent first year... because it has games I have enjoyed playing, and my PERSONAL OPINION does not necessarily take into account general market trends, which have been pretty bad for Nintendo.

That's fine!
I would perhaps even agree with you - let's take a look at some of the great/good games the Wii U has had in its first year:
- New Super Mario Bros. U
- Lego City Undercover
- Rayman Legends
- Assassin's Creed III
- Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
- Pikmin 3
- The Wonderful 101
- Lego Marvel Super Heroes
- Need for Speed: Most Wanted
- Call of Duty: Black Ops II
- Call of Duty: Ghosts
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut
- ZombiU
- Splinter Cell: Blacklist
That doesn't mean market realities and trends can't be talked about
Oh yeah, don't let me kill discussion in that area. I just think we should just be clear about whether we're talking about how WE personally feel, or the general reality of things. I think that's how this discussion started anyway.
I finished up Wind Waker and started playing Pikmin 3 today. Damn son, that's a nice looking game! Better than anything I ever saw on PS3. I can't wait to see what Nintendo does with Zelda next.
