Hanging a pair of speakers from a whiteboard using very strong magnets - crazy or?

BlindZenDriverBlindZenDriver Registered User regular
I want to put up a pair of speakers in my office at work and they need to go on the wall, but I can't make any holes but so the only option is to hang them from a big whiteboard using magnets.

The plan is to get a pair of these:

I ideal conditions such magnets can hold something like 240 lbs!

However a whiteboard is not an ideal surface since it is painted, not very thick so there less metal for the magnetic field to work and the force applied by hanging the speakers is at a 90 degree angle. Still I reckon they should be able to carry my aprox. 10 lbs speakers just fine.

(The plan is to simply screw a hook or eye into the speaker boxes and then hang them from the magnetic hooks).

However I wonder if the magnets will interfere with the speakers function and to complicate matters further it is active speakers so there is also a bunch of electronics to consider - more specific one of the speakers holds an amplifier that powers both the speakers.

Details on the speakers can be found here: Link to manual in pdf

I'm hoping someone here can share knowledge or experience about having strong magnets close to speakers and/or an amplifier?

Only real suggestion, is that you place the magnets near the bottom of the whiteboard, preferably butt up against a ridge. otherwise they will just slowly slide down there every few days anyway, and there's the chance they could fall forward if left to slide down on their own. Otherwise, those things are beastly strong, they may slide on the surface, but you gotta yank the crap outta them to actually remove one

edit: As for worrying about the interference of a magnet to a speaker, there's a much more powerful magnet contained inside the speaker itself, I can't see the wall magnet being able to interfere with it at all

The 3M adhesive hangers are built for this sort of thing. Just get ones large enough to hold the weight - it will tell you on the back how much weight they can hold.

Don't attach them to the whiteboard though, because the adhesive is designed to hold and release from paint. You may screw up the whiteboard if you attach it to that.

Thank you both for info and suggestions.
    • Sounds reasonable that the magnets should interfere with the speakers operating.
    • On the sliding down I am hoping the magnets are strong enough for that not to happen, but if needed then supposedly one can increase the friction between magnet and surface with a thin piece of rubber.
    • The 3M stuff is amazing however the free wall surfaces is raw brick wall so I do not think it will work well.

I wonder if a liberal application of velcro might do the trick.

I'm fairly sure there's some 3M stuff that works for porous surfaces like brick.

What about using something other then magnets on the whiteboard?

While those magnets may seem strong, permanent magnets as a whole are generally unlikely to interfere with electronics because they create magnetic fields which are a lot weaker than what is possible with electromagnets. Additionally, the strength of any magnetic field decreases sharply with distance which is why you shouldn't put anything between your magnet and your surface, it will decrease the holding power of your magnet greatly.

if there are decent sized slots between teh bricks you can get hooks specifically designed to fit on those

What sort of brick is it? is it all smooth or are there ridges between each brick?

if you have the ridges, just get some brick clips and hang the speakers from them. example of them

the magnetic attractive force may hold 240 pounds directly applied perpendicular to the surface, but what you're talking about is friction

to prevent sliding on the smooth whiteboard surface, take some double-sided tape and put it between the magnets and the whiteboard. the pressure of the attraction will make sure the tape holds, and the tape holding will prevent sliding.
