So as much as I enjoy this game, I think in the long run what's going to prevent me from playing it is the subscription fee. Not to bring up old discussions again, but I just enjoy playing a bunch of different games too much to dedicate a month to one game. I'm also poor enough that I can't spend $15 a month on a game that I'm not playing exclusively.

nah that's understandable. Situations are different for everyone, and situations change. I think a sub is a hard thing to sell to people unless they really really want whatever it is or they feel the value is worth it. My concern is if their monthly content updates are going to be up to the task.

J. Gaffney on questing in Wildstar:
Here's my thoughts on questing overall. This isn't gospel, especially compared to what Donatelli or Bartlett would have to say.
We've swung the pendulum a few times back and forth with the percentage of kill quests vs. more custom scripted quests. There have been some iterations (believe it or not) where the argument was "too many gimmicky quests, I just wanna fight some stuff" - the plus side of the scripted quest is some variety; the down side is it's hard to make your stats matter in them (which isn't the only point of MMOs, but it sure is A point).
So one things we've aimed towards is trying to have a good mix in an area - some kill quests to incent you to fight different creatures, some scripted quests to break it up, some path missions to have a sprinkling of the things you like particularly, some challenges to provide an occasional sense of urgency. Some places (mentioned here) the mix IMO works pretty well, but some times you get too much of the same thing in a row. We review a lot of quest survey feedback on individual quests, and one of the trickiest things to judge is when a quest is too similar to those around it (hopefully it gets some more downvotes than other similar quests elsewhere).
So we're looking at a few things to break up grindy stretches:
More tougher monsters around which help fill XP bars faster if you opt into them. This helps the folks who want more challenge too (or playing in groups). (This was actually a large chunk of the point of adding the XP bar system, but the spawning pass is in progress)
Find and destroy too-ridiculous kill count quests (some that are general over a whole zone "kill animals" or whatever are OK, but farming an area for more than 10-15 even con kills is probably not balanced well; we have a "Questy" award for particularly well-reviewed quests and another for particularly poorly reviewed ones). Some of these might actually get fun though if you could do a big chunk of the bar by fighting tougher stuff in the area that qualified for credit.
We don't promise perfection on this one (everyone has their own tastes) but it would be nice to improve where possible.

Yeah, the too-repetitive kill quests and the mobs that stunlock and then 1-2 shot you are the two main complaints that I've read about this game thus far. It sounds like both are on the radar to at least be addressed if not wholesale improved, so we'll see how that plays out.
If they put in more tougher mobs meant for solo challenge and group questing I'll be a happy bunny (well, Chua). Especially when it comes to challenges.

And that's it folks, All keys for this weekend's event have been claimed
While subscription fees are a tad old, I myself do not mind them, if only because it means that I do not get the funbux store thrown in my face every five minutes. That shit got old really fast in Neverwinter.
also because for whatever reason people seem more invested and willing to cooperate when a game is subscription based. It could be a slew of reasons, but when rift and aeon went free to play, the F2P asshats flooded in and just made all world chats into filth, and then no one really wanted to party up either.
Huh, I didn't really have that experience with Rift or Tera after they went F2P... Found friendly, active, helpful leveling guilds within a week or so of rerolling in both. (I did see loads of bots however)
Days behind reply regarding questing: All I really care about is not being 'penalized' for questing in a group. Collection/interaction quests in MMO's are frequently awful for this, since everyone needs their own individual credit. The argument I usually hear in support of this design is that it balances out the questing time for parties vs solo, since a party can complete kill quests faster. But... shouldn't you be rewarded for partying up? It encourages positive player interaction.

you get renown for any group related activity on top of whatever else is going on. Renown is the social currency used to purchase some raw materials, cosmetics and housing items
just the one weekend, have to hunt every week if you want in on a regular basis right now.

They teased about revealing less hoop jumping ways of getting in "soon" which leads me to my next point:
There's very heavy hints that the big March patch is NEXT WEEK. Thousands of changes and we'all finally maybe hear the details on what's going on with this level 32 thing. Secondly (this may upset some) for five days post patch they're enabling the PvP ruleset on the default beta realm because they want to test the rule set in a "matured server population"
They've said that not only are they not going to dissuade people from being open world cancer, but are going to encourage it in any way they can think of. It's pretty much going to be a week of chaos as the beta community airs out their grievances in a physical capacity which should be right up @Kai_San 's alley
I got a key for this.
Is there an NDA? And how far along is the beta, is it still very early/buggy?
Also please tell me this is better than ESO.
Yes there is an NDA. Press NDA up to level 29 has been lifted already but we've been talking about way more for ages now.
The beta is entering final polish stage. There are bugs of course and the UI you will see today is getting replaced wholesale in a couple patches. Right now they are crunching through bug squashing/balance tweaks. Your performance will vary however because optimization probably isn't being done until the release build or one before.
Is it more fun? It plays fun and the questing isn't terrible. Outside of some fun ones dont go in expecting anything radical in that area but I never felt it was obnoxious. Ultimately that's an opinions thing. I can't speak ill or good about TESO because I haven't had any contact with it outside of the opinions of friends. I hope you have a good time this weekend though!

Beta's been ongoing since last year. NDA was a lot tighter then. What happened is after a lot of feedback, the previous UI lead was let go/resigned and the new lead/team has been trimming down and redesigning everything from the floor up. It was kind of funny to see the carbine staff apologizing profusely for how shit it is in every livestream they've done since they've been doing livestreams. You can see the preliminary version of it on the Adventures twitch stream. The final version looks pretty damn sexy though.
Holy shit pvp free for all incoming? And violent killing encouraged?
Now you really some people involved with AC are on board. Someone convinced them to go all darktide on everyone's ass.

I've enjoyed the game well enough so far, but there a few issues that grate on my nerves after a while. Beta is, of course, always beta, though my complaints about some pretty basic fundamentals seem to be buried deep within the roots of various design decisions that I'm not certain will be changed by release or even as my levels gradually climb towards the end-game.
On a more positive note, this game features some of the best rabbit people since Bucky O'Hare. I'll just continue to pretend that the Arnold Schwarzenegger bunny from Clayfighter 2 never existed.
I really was not feeling this earlier. Sorta surprising that I'd get hyped for ESO from zero interest with a weekend and lose my hype in Wildstar the same way.
I'm going to give it another try tomorrow, see if it picks up/catches me the second go, but I'm thinking 'pass' right now.
