It's 5 free initially, 6 once you reach level.... 7? It does make most games look the same, you're right. It's kind of exciting whenever you get something new... I don't know if it ranks people based on their levels, but that may be the case. If so, it could get better at a higher level, I'm not sure.
How many heroes does League include in it's weekly rotations?
I feel like 5 free heroes (6 if you unlock the last one) is a really low number. I think 8 would be a much better free roster, so that you don't end up with identical looking teams.
I mean, obviously people will be buying heroes and picking their favorites, but the weekly rotation always influences the meta and the landscape of team makeup in non-ranked play. Maybe they're only giving 5(6) weekly right now because the roster is so small.
Speaking of roster... did they ever actually get Tychus into the game? They previewed him like 3 weeks ago, but I haven't seen him pop up in any streams yet.
LoL has 10 free heroes per rotation, but they also have a much larger pool of heroes to draw from which makes that easier.
At the same time, they equally need to test the pay system, play with the gold numbers, decide if this is even the final system, etc. etc. I can see it from both points of view.
Arenanet tested their pay system with fake money all the way up to barely before release, among other examples. Having people pay real money for an alpha is ridiculous unless we're talking about some tiny team working out of someone's house who needs it to pay for food.
I could see them introduce more "free" hero slots as you continue to level up your account. Right now you start getting perks after a while and then just earn gold. Like it's been said, a larger pool of heroes translates into a higher amount of free per week.
I'm hoping next week's update adds 6-10 new characters.

I'm not sure GW2 is the best example, since didn't their shop basically shit a brick and wasn't usable for like a week after launch?
There's more to the shop systems that can't be measured by using fake cash.

I dunno, I guess I'm just used to the way betas for other MOBAs have worked, where it's pretty much always been "all heroes are available." It lets critical hero bugs get fixed more quickly and gives players a better idea of how things work overall; I dunno if making sure their BlizzBucks API is functioning properly is as big of a benefit.
It also all depends on what they want to test. considering the game is in Alpha with alot in flux re: heroes, they may see little point in doing hard testing on every aspect of the heroes that are implemented so far.
So apparently 4 new heroes are getting announced at PAX east this weekend. Wonder ho long until they show up in the client. Going by the list MetalMagus posted
- Artanis
- Varian Wrynn
- Lost Vikings
- Skeleton King
Those are my guesses since they would cover all the franchises evenly. Although I would rather it be:
Anub'arak
Kel'thuzad
Fenix
Deckard Cain
Yes I am completely making crap up for the wish list.
Has anyone purchased anything through the in-client store? I can't get it to work, and posted it up on the forums as a bug to no avail.
Does the lobby IN THE FREAKING GAME have a big 'ol Chen there to greet you?
I had forgotten about that, too Probably because I havn't sacrificed enough blood to RNGesus and still don't have alpha.
Also waiting for inevitable "Chen is just a Brewmaster ripoff" remarks from DOTA idiots.
I mean, if he has keg smash or his spirits get his regular abilities, those actually *are* the DotA modifications... but yeah, it's going to be interesting to see if they make him similar to the Brewmaster in Warcraft or shy away from that.
Ray now is boring. His ult is strong but requires no input after using it (which is easy to target), his first shooting ability is boring and actually pushes combat away from you, and his other starting ability has no immediately visible affect.
Yeah, I'm sure he's intentionally a more straightforward character. Just too much for my taste.
Like, illidan and that barbarian/berserker girl are both also pretty straightforward (especially compared to Abathur), but they are both fun.
Abathur is cool also because you actually get to play as all the other heroes with his ult. Did you know that when using his ult, you can use the ult ability of the hero you're copying as well? Lots of fun!
I can't seem to click on the gear, so I guess I'll make a new post.
It's really rewarding when you can see yourself making a noticeable difference as Abathur. Like, getting that last stab in on a fleeing enemy hero after they think they're safe, or popping on a friendly hero and putting up carapace just as they were about to get sniped, and the extra shields give them just enough HP to escape.
It's maybe cool in part because you're always guaranteed to have at least one teammate who notices :P
Honestly, I'd be very surprised if Chen wasn't announced. Seeing how he's in all the promotional material...
Other than the in game screen I've seen a lot more Sylvanas in the promo stuff. Regardless I am sure he will be in, but was just going by the list posted regarding assets. I am hoping that the reveal means they show up next week instead of "hey they will be in there eventually"
@mmmig i've bought with gold also. unfortunately real $$$ doesn't seem to work.
Are you sure that legit? That link looks mighty suspicious to me.
Blizzard linked it from the HOTS Facebook page.
Thanks! I am perhaps a bit paranoid about such things.
better safe than sorry. blizzard definitely is having some sort of contest/giveaway but i don't remember the link.
EDIT: hm...so apparently if you die as uther in the mines, you CAN NEVER LEAVE....well at least unti;l his redemption thing runs out. but you can't pursue someone who exits.

I imagine they just don't view it as a very good test of 'what do people buy' if the rotation included almost a majority of heroes.

I think he has the highest base DPS though after his chain gun warms up.
