The Learning Thread

mullymully Registered User regular
Let's use this forum for some good ole' educating. The purpose of this thread is to show the wealth of knowledge in SE++, and how freaking diverse it is.

Here's the way this will go:

Only post if you can teach something.

It doesn't matter how simple or complex -- relevant to this group or irrelevant. Whether it's a 3 paragraph seminar of a post about applying eyeliner, or just a hot-key tip for an internet browser -- it's welcome.

If you can teach it in words, it belongs here. Feel free to add an instructional image, or links to back-up hat you're saying.

Also, be smart about it. And don't not be smart about it. No "farts come from my butt, more at 11" posts.

Go!

    learning is for loosers

all i care about is xbox one

also here are some things about wordpress:

wordpress is a really neat content management system that functions as a blogging platform

it's built on PHP, which is a not-that-great programming language that was designed to be easy to use but is ultimately a bit of a mess

wordpress itself is also a bit of a mess, but thankfully for beginners it's really easy to pick up and learn

I spend most of my time these days creating customized wordpess themes for people, and once you get the hang of it down you can have a pretty functional wordpress blog put together in a couple of hours, and once you start learning some html, css and php you can modify so that it look and feels like a completely customized website

i might expand on this in a bit

    --

    To install wordpress you'll need:

Your own internet hosting account (an FTP).
The ability to make a mySQL database.
Preferably some kind of domain name.
A copy of the latest version of wordpress ( found here: http://en-ca.wordpress.org/download/ )

The hosting bits are a little tricky. You can sign up with anyone ( don't use Godaddy, they suck), and for about $50-100 a year they can get you a domain name (www.your-name.com) and some hosting to go with it.

Once you have your hosting paid for and bought, you might have some easy options built in to your hosting that will install Wordpress for you, or you might need to do it manually, by creating an empty mySQL database, uploading Wordpress to your hosting, and then modifying the wp-config file with your relevant database hosting. More on that can be found here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress

The 5-minute installation will only be true if you've installed Wordpress before and know your way around your hosting. If you don't be very prepared to look up how exactly wordpress needs to be installed on your particular hosting account, since the process can vary from account to account.

Pirates are depicted with parrots on their shoulders for the following reasons:

    * Parrots are tropical
    * Parrots were often used as bribery gifts
    * During the piracy era, parrots were rarely domesticated and therefore valuable - so they were often caught by pirates to sell.

How to make a good grilled cheese sandwich.

Heat up a seasoned cast iron skillet to low-medium heat. If you don't own a cast iron skillet, go back to the barn you were raised from and ask your mother how she could be so cruel. It will take a bit depending on it's size. You don't need to put any fat on the skillet yet. Pop on 2 slices of bread to toast. Butter the top ends that aren't getting toasted yet, those are the outside of the sandwich. When the inside is done toasting, flip them over. Put your cheddar or muenster cheese on now with a bit of mustard. If you're not dipping the sandwiches into tomato soup then go ahead and place a tomato on with a hint of salt. When the outside of the sandwich bread slices are done, get them off the skillet. Cut into diagonal slices before serving.

Some things that may make life easier for Windows users.
That key on your keyboard between Ctrl and Alt, is your shortcut to saving a couple seconds in a lot of different places.
Want to minimize all your windows to get to your desktop quickly? Win+D
Want to get all those windows back how they were? Win+D again. (Win+M and Win+Shift+M apparently do the same thing)
Want to open up My Computer without having to find and click it? Win+E
Want to open the run dialog to start some thing in a command liney fashion? Win+R
Want to lock your computer so you have to put a password in to use it again so your roommate doesn't put shock porn images as your wallpaper while you are in the bathroom? Win+L

There's a ton more, but these are the ones that most people would use commonly.

Also, you can use Ctr+Shift+Esc to launch the Task Manager directly.

well I'm told I'm a pretty good writer so here's a nugget of little-known wisdom that came into play recently

when writing popcultural satire, under no circumstances depict the object of your piece as General Hideki Tojo, unless they have in fact been tried and found guilty of one of the following by an international tribunal: authorizing inhumane treatment of POWs as proscribed by the Geneva Conventions, waging unprovoked war against the Republic of China, or waging aggressive war against the British Commonwealth of Nations, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the United States of America and/or the French Republic.

I've followed this rule in all of my scholarly and creative writing exercises and it has worked great, apply it to everything you do

    put it in the toaster

Never use an open-ended spanner to undo a nut or bolt.

    1Double_Open_End_Spanner_250x250.jpg

You are a great deal more likely to round off the flats or slip off the nut/bolt you are trying to undo. This is because the jaws of the spanner will flex when you apply a load to them, and open out very slightly. This is more than enough for them to cam over the points of the fastener and round them off.

Instead, use a ring spanner to loosen nuts, and for final tightening.

    ev038.jpg

No jaw flex! You can't wind a nut or bolt in as quickly as you can with an open-ender (this is where open-ended spanners excel), but you're much less likely to lose knuckle skin when loosening tight fasteners.

Using the right tool for the job is part of workshop best practice.

For instance, there are multiple different types of non-slotted screwdrivers.

    Philips:
    philips-head-screwdriver.png

    and Pozidriv:

    11015_5F00_rightdriver.jpg

    are the two most common.

THEY ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH ONE ANOTHER.

Whilst the drivers will fit in either fastener, the receptacles are shaped differently and you will greatly increase wear on the tool, and the likelihood of stripping the fastener head if you mix them up.

Phillips tip drivers and fasteners are designed in such a way that the walls of the flanges of the tool/slots that drive the fastener are not parallel, they are in fact angled to act in such a way that if you attempt to apply too much torque to the fastener, the driver will ride up out of the slots to prevent damage to the materials being fixed together caused by over tightening. Pozidriv tolls and fasteners are designed such that the driving elements are perfectly parallel specifically to resist the driver tip riding up out of the fastener.

For an easy visual comparison of the two driver tips:

    witte-double-ended-screwdriver-bit-pozi-phillips-card-of-3.jpg

Phillips on the left, Pozidriv on the right.

And a comparison with the respective fasteners too:

Hmmm ... what to post that's plant related and also something someone other than me would want to know about ...

Okay, I'll keep it simple! A good bunch of you have probably gardened before, or maybe have some houseplants. Eventually, you are going to want to fertilize, because either the particular cultivar of plant will need more nutrients than it can naturally obtain (such as, a hybridized variety of tomato), or because the plant is not getting it's constant cycle of decaying nutrients (such as your houseplants that are normally understory specimens).

Every fertilizer you buy in the store has to have a clearly-marked NPK: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. Three numbers, such as 3-8-6. There might be an additional number, this would commonly be Sulfur, Iron, or maybe Zinc, but they don't have to be part of the NPK and usually aren't, that I've seen (YMMV in states that aren't Oregon)

In a simplified nutshell, nitrogen is for the greenery of the plant, everything above the roots. Phosphorus contributes a lot of the roots. Potassium is 'all around', as I've heard it phrased. Phosphorus and Potassium also contribute to flowering plants and, if they normally produce them, their fruits.

How is this relevant to you, knowing what you need to buy? A lot of manufacturers break down fertilizers by common need, such as 'Bud and Bloom', or 'Vegetable Garden', or 'All-purpose'. But if you know what your plant needs, or even more specifically what it needs at what time of year, then you're just looking for an approximate ratio and not necessarily a specific brand label. Like vegetable fertilizers and bud/bloom fertilizers? Frequently low(er) Nitrogen, higher Phos. and Pot.

Beyond these three macro nutrients, you have a plethora of micro nutrients; these aren't used in the same quality as NPK but are good if not near-essential in some part or another. Best sources of micro nutrients are sea-based fertilizers; kelp meal, crab meal, fish bone meal, etc. And like most of your food items, fertilizers will list their ingredients from highest to lowest quality, so you can have an even better understanding of what you're putting into the soil!

Now go forth, all you Southern Hemisphere forumers, and enjoy your soon-to-be summer gardening, while all us northerners dream of next year's harvest.

Let's learn about translation! Grade school biology GO.

Translation is how your cells construct proteins using RNA. It all takes place in your ribosomes, which are themselves RNA (ribosomal RNA, or rRNA). You then have another type of RNA, tRNA, which reads yet ANOTHER type of RNA, mRNA, and using that information to grab amino acids. These amino acids are what form proteins! The mRNA is why DNA is so important, as the DNA in the nucleus is what is used as a template for making mRNA. A gene is essentially the string of DNA that will ultimately be responsible for the string of mRNA that creates a specific protein.

Codons are the specific codes that denote a specific amino acids. If you are familiar with the bases of RNA (guanine, cytosine, adenine, and uracil), then you can the follow to determine what a string of mRNA will produce.
    FNGJozY.jpg
Let's say our mRNA is AUG CCG UUU CUC UGA. That would produce Methionine, Proline, Phenylalanine, Leucine, and then the UGA is a code that basically says "stop production." The tRNA would stop grabbing amino acids, and you would have your string of amino acids that is on its way to becoming a protein.

Looking at the table, you can see that multiple codes share an amino acid. This why mutations aren't always necessarily fatal, and in many cases are just neutral. Problems occur when what should be an amino acid code becomes a "stop" code, leaving you with a string of amino acids cut short of what it should be. This is likely to be detrimental, even fatal, depending on what the protein is for. Sometimes you luck out and get something better, but beneficial mutations are not typical.

This is really simplifying things quite a bit (and leaving out the step before translation: transcription, from which we get the mRNA in the first place), but it's one of the most important biological processes out there. Even simple organisms like bacteria have ribosomes!

The voice is easily one of the most complicated instruments ever! You are essentially blowing throw a giant meat sack, with an entire anatomy of bones, organs, and fluids that alter the timbre of your voice!

Whispering is much more tiring than yelling.
Yelling can actually be done in a very healthy way so that you can do it for hours and hours before getting tired.
The reason you don't know how your voice sounds is because you are listening through your sympathetic vibrations in your jaw and skull that go all the way to your inner ear. This is a drastic change compared to what actually comes out of your mouth.
The soft pallet ( the flap connected to the roof of your mouth that lets you breathe through your nose) is a voluntary muscle and can be on of the most influential muscles on the sound of your voice. Raising your soft pallet in combination with a low, relaxed larynx (where the cords are located in your throat) is what creates the richness in one's voice. Learning to do this can actually be helpful outside of singing! If you deliver the same amount of effort (or air pressure, more scientifically) from the lungs while your larynx is low and soft pallet high, you can essentially create an acoustic amplifier inside your mouth and throat allowing you to speak easily twice as loud.

    DNA stuff!

Humans have a genome of around 20,000 genes depending on how you count and define the word. All human complexity comes about from the interactions between these genes (or more accurately the products created by these genes including various forms of RNA as Rorus illustrated above). This is simplifying things a bit as environment can also play a huge role.

We have 22 pairs of chromosomes everyone has called autosomes and two sex chromosomes, X and Y, for a total of 46.

The amount of DNA packed into every cell in your body is approximately 6 feet in length if uncoiled.

All living cells are differentiated into specialized cell types from special cells called stem cells. Stem cells are pluripotent, which means they can become(almost) any other kind of cell! So in theory if you take a bunch of stem cells you can repair damaged complex tissues like hearts. That is why research into them is so huge.

I can go on but those are things I find very interesting about genetics.

Also! Opera has this terrible reputation for people not singing real words. While I assure you that is a stereotype that isn't true, and in fact you are probably being slightly ignorant to the fact that it was probably italian and that is why you couldn't understand it...

When singing the more challenging songs in opera, particularly for sopranos (the highest main class of vocal fach) many women ( and the few gifted, or damaged men ) must practice singing that high with no pronunciation at all, because when you are first learning to produce sound using that much pressure inside your body (higher sound pressure=higher pitch) messing up a consonant could cause such a backlash of pressure that your vocal chords collapse! In fact part of the reason it takes so long to become so proficient at singing classical western music and many african styles is that you have to build muscle tissue and strength exactly like getting swole in the gym.

Of course you can make your vocal chords collapse without using a consonant too, by overloading them with pressure from the lungs. Don't do this. It hurts. It's scary. You will be afraid to talk for days.
