I remember that the Spiral Knights community was pretty upset at all of the "Steam jerks" that would jump into a match, throw a snowball at someone, and then quit.
Yeah that's the problem with 'event's like that with games that have normal communities. It's not the players fault that <company> puts the special things in said games that people want to grab, but it can also be fairly disruptive to normal play of said games.
For an example, see World of Warcraft PvP during Childrens Week. You can feel the gnashing of teeth even if you don't play it.
I just had my first @CorriganX moment. I went to Newfoundland in XCOM, saw what was unfolding, said NOPE, and managed to get one lowly rookie home. RIP XCOM and my first classic attempt. I think I'll be knocking it down to normal to see all of the new stuff.

It's weird, when I first start a game, I get a bunch of cards my first real play session, and then I don't get any more, ever again.
Played a lot of FORCED in local co-op with my brother tonight. Holy fuck does that game get devious (and good). People with co-ops interest, get it for sure. It's fast paced, makes you think, is setup so that teamwork sort of naturally evolves. Story is barebones but charming. No complicated progress tracking, you simply are the same level as the host and can freely spec out your character (and switch between them) to tailor to your needs. It's bound to get at least a small discount in the winter sale I'd wager.
Some of the puzzles I actually feel like I might've cheated or brute forced they got so mind boggling.
Does anybody else just... have Spiral Knights now? It's been in my library forever even though I'm pretty sure I never bought it. I know they add some games to your library during free weekends but Spiral Knights got added this one time and just never left.
F2P.
I'm sure there's dozens of F2P games on Steam and none of them have been permanently added to my library except this one.
It was part of the winter achievements last year, IIRC. Did you play it then?
Nope, never.

Ah, I was under the impression you got more cards with more playtime, ala people letting their games run in the background so they could farm them. I guess that doesn't make sense, because it'd cause Wiemer era inflation. Thanks.
So the new Bioshock DLC got me to also finally play some of CitC. Some of these ribbons are fucking impossible, particularly because in order to retry you have to beat every wave prior to them again. Ugh.
Oh lord, it's demon prettyboy again, still with the mixed signals.
He keeps acting like some dark and tormented guy and that somehow excuses what I can only describe as bipolar behavior, and now he wants to be all buddy-buddy again. I'm not sure I should grab a meal with him; I think he thinks it might mean something it doesn't, and I still don't know if he's on the level. That pie he got me was delicious, though... eh, maybe I should just pretend I have plans this weekend, like I'm doing my nails or whatever the fuck girls do on the weekends. Nah, my nails are fine, he's not gonna buy that. Wait, I'll pretend I'm broke! Goddamnit he's offering to pay. Ohhhh why can't that nice guy from the sports club ask me out instead?
Being a magical high school girl is hard, man.
Oh, and Magical Diary is surprisingly fun. Apart from being overtly cute and basically what you'd expect from the packaging, there's an actual decent game beneath all the sparkles and glitter. Only had one real dungeon exam so far, but I like the approach: they're basically puzzle zones where it's on you and the spells you've learned to look for one of the ways out, but it's not a game over if you can't get through (unless you rack up enough demerits from failing).
Now, back to blue magic training so I can teleport the treasurer asshole's face into a toilet while shouting NEEEEEEEEEEERD
Or building up strength to achieve the same effect manually.
I don't like the treasurer, is what I'm getting at.
Galaxy on Fire 2 HD seems pretty fun so far. It has Xbox 360 controller support built in and changes button prompts. Lots of stuff to upgrade on your ship, it looks pretty good, and seems to be pretty open ended a-la Privateer. It seems to have the usual mine or buy and sell cargo or do missions and blow people up stuff to do, with a fairly interesting story so far. The voice acting is okay, but nothing to write home about. It's certainly not bad, though, which it easily could have been. I haven't played too far into it, and will completely forget about it tomorrow (X: Rebirth), but it's definitely worth grabbing the Humble bundle for, on top of the other stuff in it.
How does the combat stack up to Strike Suit Zero, if you've played it? I got a few hours into SSZ but quickly found myself overwhelmed with the amount of killing I was supposed to be doing. While I do enjoy a bit of combat, I'd prefer to be either one of an armada of ship or be responsible for a few sneaky attacks. I don't like being the focus of an enormous scale conflict where I'm the lynchpin even though there are Dreadnaughts or Heavy Cruisers in the same fight.
I haven't played SSZ, but the combat so far (mostly tutorial stuff) has been pretty low key, only a handful of enemies. I don't see it ramping up as it's not a super fast game. You'll probably mostly be on your own (though I have done one fight with an ally), but it's your standard dogfighting, at least so far.
I'll pick it up then. I haven't played a space Privateer style game before, so it might be good to dip my toe into the genre with something like this than diving straight into the X series
Yeah, it's definitely lighter than something like the X series.
The only disappointing thing I've found so far is there were 2 DLCs released, but I guess the developer went bankrupt and they won't be released for the PC version.
I've been playing Galaxy on Fire 2 as well, Steam says I've played 15 hours of it and it's pretty good fun though it does get a little repetitive. You can hire wingmen that stay with you for a while, the combat does get a bit harder but that's mainly down to the enemy ships having better weapons
Seriously, the first Dead Space is a treasure if you like anything about the first two Resident Evils. Some of you nerds that don't own it need to enter that giveaway.
So, i confese, I started EQ again. And hit up EQ2 just to see. I have games to play, why would I do this to myself? That being said. I liked it. I haven't touched it in forever, and some stuff has changed. But it was like an old friend that you havn't seen forever, but remembered why you liked it. I don't need good graphics, and no MMO has ever hit me the way EQ did and still does. I don't need to be level 10 in 5 minutes. Ah, are there any newer MMO's that make death so terrible, and arn't instant win? No PvP, just PvE types though.
I promise to finish HL2: Episode 1 when I get off work though.
The bad news is that was years ago and there's still no save in sight.
I'm having a hard time getting a handle on what to do in Delve Deeper. Any tips? Is the early game a land rush to get to already revealed treasures and mining spots, or do you not want to spread your dwarves out for fear of attackers? Is gold, apparently the bottom rung loot type, worth dawdling in the upper levels of a mine to clear out? And about how long does a game usually run?
@Stolls - you haven't shared the most important piece of information.
Finding the right boyfriend is important. Learning the right magic and passing all your tests is important. Not getting expelled is important. Getting married or not, that's an important story element. Treasurer? Yep, important.
But the one defining element of your game experience in Magical Diary, the bit that determines whether or not your game was a success:
Instead of giving away one big X: Rebirth, I decided to give away three smaller games that were talked about in the past 30-40 posts. As well as the last two left over from the fundraiser.
- THIS IS FOR EPISODES 3 AND 4, NOT 1 AND 2!!!!
Giveaways are open until my birthday (this Sunday) at 10pm EST, Open to PA G&T, No contributions needed because it's a partay up in hurr.
I'll try to sneak away and repost every so often over the weekend, but no promises.
Hey Steam thread - could you educate me a little on headsets? Christmas is coming and I think I want to put one on my list. I want one to use with my Rift, but also my game room has both my PC and my Wii U so quite often we're competing volumes and when the other game is Just Dance or Rock Band I tend to lose that battle.
I don't care about wireless at all, but I'm super intrigued with the idea of 5.1 built into headphones. Does it really sound like things are all around you? Do they plug into USB instead of audio out? Is it convenient to flip between their sound and PC speaker sound?

I use Astro A40s, price might seem steep but you'll know exactly where that money went once you use them. Super comfortable and best sounding headphones/microphone combo I've ever used.
How does it work in terms of flipping between speakers and headphones? Do you just turn the volume down on the speakers and leave the headset plugged in all the time?
Alternatively don't get really nice headphones and don't wind up in a position where you get really annoyed when you're phone plays music slightly off balance due to cheap store brought headphones.
Seriously, that stuff is the worst first world problem.
I just checked my e-mail and got a message that Wrack is up as an early-access beta. I have $5 and change off of CS:GO crates and various trading cards. I was thinking of buying Alpha Prime for a cheap, cheesy shooter, but this just became a high priority.

though woot has turtle beach reurbs today. though i didn't like my TB headset
After losing my first Path of Exile Hardcore Character (RIP QuickMaddie), i decided to take a break from Wraeclast and play some other game.
I picked names out of a hat, basically, and got 5 games selected.
The Ball
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Assassin's Creed: Revolutions
Ys: The Oath in Felghana
Now, I started both Batman and KotOR without playing much and i got pretty far into Ys before giving up... But what's intriguing me is "The Ball".
I don't remember how or when I got it, or much of anything about it. Any strong opinions for or against that game?
Also, which game would you suggest i get on next?
TIA.
Having only played Arkham Asylum and KOTOR from that list, I can wholeheartedly recommend both games. Both are worth a playthrough.

Okay, uh... Fez has a completion counter that goes way beyond 100%, right?
Because right now, it says i am 91% done with the game... And i basically solved none of the obtuse puzzles.
I have almost all the cubes i need to open the biggest door, though, only missing 3... And yet, i have no idea where to go now. I feel i may need to solve some puzzles, but gosh darn, those are some obtuse puzzles that make Myst look easy.
i guess i'm gonna have to learn Fezese to keep going?
I think that the thing that will stick with me is the dialogue. The whole "Hello, I am a Paladin, I hate you because you are a vampire and I do what Rome tells me to do." "I am a vampire, but I am not an evil vampire." "Neither of us is capable of using contractions in our speech." "That is correct." "Contractions are a weak human affection." "Look out. The moon."
Some of that may be actual in-game dialogue. Spoilers, I guess. Do you really need spoilers on a game like this?
I'd like to think that the people who made the game are aware of exactly how terrible it was. When a vampire asks me to bring her a clean bottle from the table (not a dirty bottle, because a dirty bottle will destroy the ritual), and then stands ten feet away while I go to her table and grab the dirty bottle, I can't help but think that someone wrote this as some sort of parody of the entire RPG decision making genre thing. The game pulls a "Remember that character who died? Well, they're STILL ALIVE! (DUNDUNDUN!)" thing multiple times, possibly because they couldn't hire additional voice actors and just had to keep bringing back the same three or four.
I don't know if it was mentioned earlier, but enemy leashing and AI is hilarious. I beat most of the game as the vampire women, and I basically stood there crossbowing things from a distance for the first half of the game, watching enemies run up to me and then turn around as they reached their leash. The second half, I used the magic of running around in circles while I used the crossbows on everything. It made for a pretty easy game.
I mentioned before, but there's probably a few artists involved who deserve to be working on something better. Except for those who designed the female character's "armour"; hopefully they never find work in mainstream gaming.
Finally, I think that all but two of my deaths were camera related. That camera is the game's true horror, an eldrich thing that has hidden in wait in Stygian darkness, slithering around the shadows of the annals of recorded gaming, emerging from the shattered moon to plunge the world into bottomless pits. It's bad.
And for all of that, I definitely enjoyed myself. It was truly terrible on every level, but it was fun terrible, you know?

Oh yeah, you are.
Do i need to find all 4 artifacts for that?
No. You have to literally decode that shit yourself. There's no in-game translation, no item to get. You literally have to find the screen with the hint on it, understand the hint, then decode the text you see and build your own decoder ring.
Just like we had to do in the old days, dagnabbit!
I actually finally just threw away all the scraps of paper on my desk scribbled with disjointed and uncatalogued Fez puzzles and translations. Creating them was magical.
Though if you're impatient, here's a hint where to go look:
There's a level in the forest area where you can climb up, and there's just a big block of Feztext and a couple of animals doing their thing. This is your Rosetta Stone, and everything you need to decode it is right there.
If you're SUPER impatient, though, no one would blame you for looking it up online.
