Okay, uh... Fez has a completion counter that goes way beyond 100%, right?

Because right now, it says i am 91% done with the game... And i basically solved none of the obtuse puzzles.

I have almost all the cubes i need to open the biggest door, though, only missing 3... And yet, i have no idea where to go now. I feel i may need to solve some puzzles, but gosh darn, those are some obtuse puzzles that make Myst look easy.

i guess i'm gonna have to learn Fezese to keep going?

    Oh yeah, you are.

Do i need to find all 4 artifacts for that?

No. You have to literally decode that shit yourself. There's no in-game translation, no item to get. You literally have to find the screen with the hint on it, understand the hint, then decode the text you see and build your own decoder ring.

Just like we had to do in the old days, dagnabbit!

I actually finally just threw away all the scraps of paper on my desk scribbled with disjointed and uncatalogued Fez puzzles and translations. Creating them was magical.

Though if you're impatient, here's a hint where to go look:
There's a level in the forest area where you can climb up, and there's just a big block of Feztext and a couple of animals doing their thing. This is your Rosetta Stone, and everything you need to decode it is right there.

If you're SUPER impatient, though, no one would blame you for looking it up online.

You misunderstood me, i meant do i need to have all 4 artifacts to learn how to decode things. i have a counting cube and a writing cube already, plus a book. i'm guessing the 4th artifact would be similarly useful to decode things.

    Thanks for the hint, though...

Time for me to dive back and note shit down.

    BTW, about a room...
The one where there's a pillar with squiggles and a large slab with lights that react to your buttons...

That's the rosetta stone to know what buttons to press, right? With L/R being the S/Z tetrominos, directions being the Ts and Jmp being the square, right? It's not a puzzle but a decoder, right?

Note: Long, and emotional post to follow. You have been warned.

I found out that my grandfather passed away yesterday. He was 95, and an amazing man who exemplified a life well lived.

There is so much to say about him, but so little of it is relevant here, so I'll just say this: without him, I probably wouldn't be here, now. It was because he decided to start using computers for his poetry publishing company that I learned to program (in BASIC, on an Apple IIE clone called the Laser 128k. And yes, that 128k was how much memory it had.)

I fell in love with PC gaming on the Compaq 386 SX 20 (with the Turbo! button) playing hours of Wing Commander, Wolfenstein 3D, Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, and Commander Keen.
And because of that, I'm giving away a couple of those favorites.

He's the one who flew out with me to look over the college I decided I wanted to go to, and gave it his stamp of approval.

I don't know that he ever quite understood how I managed to make the career in software development that I did, but without the influence he had, his willingness to embrace technology, and the support he gave me, I doubt I'd be here now. He'll be missed.

Does Delve Deeper not let you save mid-game?

Well, the good news is that the devs are active on the steam forums and acknowledged people's desire for a save.

The bad news is that was years ago and there's still no save in sight.

I'm having a hard time getting a handle on what to do in Delve Deeper. Any tips? Is the early game a land rush to get to already revealed treasures and mining spots, or do you not want to spread your dwarves out for fear of attackers? Is gold, apparently the bottom rung loot type, worth dawdling in the upper levels of a mine to clear out? And about how long does a game usually run?

That's the beauty of the game. There are a lot of viable strategies and tactics available. Mainly it comes down to your team composition and the map/board you are playing on. If you have miners on your team their extra mining speed makes basic gold more attractive, if you have scouts then it becomes more attractive to cover ground and hunt relics. If you have a lot of fighters then you can do the monster hunting bit, or you can even kick the other teams ass and take their stuff. It's all really pretty situational too, which is something else I really love about the game. Sure there are static strategies you can develop but there's a lot of room for experimentation and developing a playstyle built around your own risk/reward tolerances. Delving Deeper pays off but it can be hilariously dangerous too.

The lack of a save feature is annoying sometimes but games last about a half hour and it's turn based so it's no big deal to walk away from something and finish it later or just scrap a game and start a new one the next time. I think I need to get my son playing this game in hotseat with me now, it'll be great for reinforcing some math skills we've been working on.

Dude, so much empathy. I support my family (mom, wife, daughter, and pets) from my tech knowledge, learned from my grandpa who passed away this year at 88 or so. He gave me his TRS80, and books and books of coding. The first games I played, I had to program myself from a book, and it's lost when you turn off the computer unless you save it to the tape drive, which looked like a normal tape player, but you use special magnetic tapes or some shit. Grandpa walked me through the process, and stayed very active with computers until he was bedridden in the last year following a stroke. I put my first 'new' computer together myself, piece by piece, at a tremendous savings from a pre-built model, also a 386 with Turbo! button. All that said, many many feels for you, and the loss of what you describe as an incredible man. I can only hope the have the same influence on my progeny.

Thanks, @Drake. I guess I just need to get through a game and see how it goes. I've been annouyed at how much exposition you have to click through in the tutorial (although I admit my first attempts with the game have been somewhat distracted affairs with Workaholics streaming on the second screen...)

I like the idea of using this or any game to reinforce math skills with kids. I'm annoyed with my own son at the moment because he's been asking for my help with one level on PvZ2 for two days now, and yet insists that he doesn't need a sun producing plant in his lineup every time I suggest it because the level gives him four free sunflowers. I predict the same conversation again tonight. (His unwillingness to let me help is going to make his adolescence torture for us both I predict...because he's a lot like me.)

So, i confese, I started EQ again. And hit up EQ2 just to see. I have games to play, why would I do this to myself? That being said. I liked it. I haven't touched it in forever, and some stuff has changed. But it was like an old friend that you havn't seen forever, but remembered why you liked it. I don't need good graphics, and no MMO has ever hit me the way EQ did and still does. I don't need to be level 10 in 5 minutes. Ah, are there any newer MMO's that make death so terrible, and arn't instant win? No PvP, just PvE types though.

I promise to finish HL2: Episode 1 when I get off work though.

I've been resisting the pull of EQ2 since I left WoW. I actually liked it more when I played it, but my friends were all cemented in WoW and so I stayed there. Been watching the developments of both EQN and Wildstar now trying to decide my next MMO to fall into.

Meanwhile, I've slowly been working at the backlog, but...Payday 2. As repetitive as it gets once you've done all the heists, I still enjoy it. Especially as more friends finally start playing. It's all new to them and I get the chance to show 'em the ropes. Good times.

Hey Steam thread - could you educate me a little on headsets? Christmas is coming and I think I want to put one on my list. I want one to use with my Rift, but also my game room has both my PC and my Wii U so quite often we're competing volumes and when the other game is Just Dance or Rock Band I tend to lose that battle.

I don't care about wireless at all, but I'm super intrigued with the idea of 5.1 built into headphones. Does it really sound like things are all around you? Do they plug into USB instead of audio out? Is it convenient to flip between their sound and PC speaker sound?

If you read the audiophilia thread in Moe's, this has been discussed in more detail.

The short answer is that fake or simulated 5.1 sounds far better than headphones with multiple drivers. There are a few ways to do it.

One is to get a card like the Xonar DX which has Dolby Headphone software built in. The software will do the fake 5.1 mix for you, so plug in a set of decent headphones and you're good to go.

Another is to buy an Astro Mixamp which has a few other features, but takes a 5.1 input and mixes it for the headphones of your choice. The Mixamps come alone or paired with a headphone/mic combo. I believe Turtle Beach has a similar setup for a few dollars less.

I haven't tried real surround headphones, but everything I've heard about them is terrible. I use the discontinued wireless Mixamp paired with some HM-5s. The surround sound work fairly well, but not as good as multiple speaker setup in your living room. Still, it's really good.

If you have good headphones being fed good sound, you'll wonder why you didn't do it earlier.

After losing my first Path of Exile Hardcore Character (RIP QuickMaddie), i decided to take a break from Wraeclast and play some other game.

I picked names out of a hat, basically, and got 5 games selected.
    • The Ball
    • Batman: Arkham Asylum
    • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
    • Assassin's Creed: Revolutions
    • Ys: The Oath in Felghana

Now, I started both Batman and KotOR without playing much and i got pretty far into Ys before giving up... But what's intriguing me is "The Ball".

I don't remember how or when I got it, or much of anything about it. Any strong opinions for or against that game?

Also, which game would you suggest i get on next?

    TIA.

This is late, but I'll toss in my two cents.

I got my copy with the Potato Sack, though I was interested in it before. The game is sort of in the vein of Portal (but don't get excited). It's a first person environmental puzzle game. The core mechanic is the titular Ball, which is a giant orb that you can attract or repel at high speeds. You use this mechanic to hit buttons, trip pressure plates, guide the ball to new locations and even run over enemies. Rather than take place in a research lab like so many other of these games, it takes place in a series of sprawling underground caverns that house a long-dead South American civilization. There's little story aside from a couple of cutscenes that read hieroglyphics and a few paragraphs when you start each level. Definitely no hilarious voice guiding you through things. All you really have are the puzzles.

Since you already have it, it probably wouldn't kill you to play it, but there are SO MANY better examples in this genre. (I'd probably rank it worst out of the "Portal-alikes")

In short, they're awesome. Although I think they're wearing out now because I get the odd sound cut out. That said, I haven't tried virtual surround on a high quality set of headphones so I cannot say if "real surround sound" headphones are truly superior.

I have X41 7.1 surround sound Turtle Beaches. When I used them to play CoD (when I still played CoD) it felt like cheating. I could pinpoint exactly where people were running from and anticipate them coming around corners, open fire early enough that they walk right into their own doom.

In short, they're awesome. Although I think they're wearing out now because I get the odd sound cut out. That said, I haven't tried virtual surround on a high quality set of headphones so I cannot say if "real surround sound" headphones are truly superior.

Aren't those simulated surround sound phones? As in there's only one driver per ear, but software makes it seem otherwise?

Edit: They are indeed fake surround, wireless, and seem to have gotten some decent reviews.
