Man, this was unexpected. I started out with 'alright, lets get the butchering of Paul over with.'
'Trumpet for the guitar? Lame'
'Oh my god....that voice. So amazing.'
There's a band called Maiden uniteD who play nothing but re-arranged acoustic covers of Iron Maiden songs.
I was already fan of the vocalist, Damian Wilson, from his work with Ayreon, and it's good to hear him here. It's nice that they didn't get a singer trying to emulate Bruce Dickinson.
Holy Shit!
How did I not know this existed?!
I've been a huge fan of Damian's since I heard the cover of Who Wants to Live Forever he did with Floor Jansen and After Forever. And Ayeron and Star One of course.
No matter where you go...there you are. ~ Buckaroo Banzai
It's not really a cover, but my parents once told me a funny story. They had gone out to a fancy restaurant in Philly (maybe NYC) for one of their milestone anniversaries (I think it was either 25 or 30 years). This restaurant had a harpist. It took until about halfway through dinner, but they realize that occasionally she was slipping classic rock stuff like Led Zeppelin in between the classical stuff. My parents caught her eye and gave her a little "we caught you" look. She gave them an little embarrassed smile and looked away.
What they should have done is slipped her some cash :P
welp, 50 song playlist thanks to this thread :^: (also an hr I should have been working down the drain)

Somehow I've overlooked this thread for the past month. I'm glad that the Heart cover of Stairway to Heaven has been posted (though I'm a bit concerned that it took until page 5 to do so!). While I take some time to dig up some truly obscure covers (maybe good, maybe bad), here's Jonathan Coulton's version of "Baby Got Back," which was infamously and shamelessly stolen by Glee.
the Now That What I call Christmas: Nope none of these Pop Stars could have made it as singers before autotune Vol 87 where you get the very badly done covers of all the classics.
or the Very Mariah Christmas where they maybe only do a couple covers, and instead the rest of it is new Christmas songs; which are universally terrible-although most the classics are probably terrible too if it weren't for the nostalgia factor.
It's like choosing between 'grandmas turkey' where everyone chokes down a piece after covering it half a boat of gravy, and some crazy gastro pub thing like Suvede horse balls with pigeon dropping risotto.
Where I work they've been playing a horrible auto-tuned version of "Wonderful Christmas Time" which was a song I never cared for to begin with but at least Paul McCartney can actually sing.

to be fair, All I Want for Christmas is You is actually a good Christmas song; really good, in fact.

A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.

And to conform to the spirit of the thread, a cover that doesn't really add anything to the original but certainly doesn't (in my opinion) ruin the original either.
Rise Against - Any way you want it (Orig. Journey)
The original is an hella awesome song, but I actually think these guys have a better sound to the production and their instruments: https://soundcloud.com/aceta/earthmover

GWAR covering Carry On Wayward Son is the most ridiculous thing I've heard.

Apologies if this was already posted but Van Canto covering Metallica's Battery,
In the same groove here, Dreadful Shadows performing Twist in my Sobriety.
The actual videos for this song have horrible sound quality. No idea what's up with the mashup here. Just listen to the music, ignore the visuals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nT_wTkFWGo0
A transformation cover that I really like. Even though the song is more upbeat than the original, it's really depressing since this came out around the time of his death.

Another transformation, let's take a punk song, slow that sucker way down and sub in a piano. I love this cover.

I loved that Peaceville X compilation. Some great songs on there. Whatever happened to Michelle Richfield? Last thing I own by her was some mild electronic/ambient album called Sear.
Pretty faithful to the original song! Although that's not really the kind of cover I am into anymore. Opeth did that sort of thing with Alice In Chains' "Would?" a while back, and even though I am a huge fan of Opeth and love the original song, their version didn't do much for me.
welcome back thread, you were my december playlist.
i was going to post johnny cash/ marilyn manson's attempts at personal jesus as an example of how a cover should and should not be done, but as i was beaten to it have this gem instead:
Here's an amazing ragtime cover of 'Call me Maybe'. I can't help but grin and enjoy this. Also, freaking amazing technical piano work - ragtime is tough to play.

Edit: Also, are covers/renditions of Christmas songs fair game for this thread, or is that a bit too far afield?
