What is the deal with items in this game? Why do some of them put little letters next to my guys sometimes?
The letters tell you how good they will be with the weapon, given their currently selected Job and Abilities. S -> A -> B etc, etc. This has a HUGE impact on physical combat.
Even armor? Cause there is an item for one of my characters that is an A versus a nothing but has the same stats and is 100g more expensive. Why should I buy that when it has the same stats?
Even armor. So a Dark Knight is pretty good with armor (B rank, I believe), while a White Mage is not. So if give swanky heavy armor to both the Dark Knight gets a lot more out of it than the White Mage. The heavier the armor the more skill you require to use it properly. In the example, giving both of them light armor (some form of robe, for example) would benefit them both almost equally. Using the Optimize command will get you the best results if you're unsure. When purchasing: heavy armor for the bulky types, light armor for the squishy casters.
That being said, that only applies if armor is roughly of the same tier. If the plate was miles better than the robe, then the White Mage would obviously get more benefit out of the plate despite being shitty at armor use.
Armor and Helms have separate stats btw.
So, say I've got a Ninja who has a ninja sword rank B attack power 17 but I've also got a regular sword that is rank C on her and attack power 26. Which would I use?
Go the equip screen, click optimize. The game will auto equip the one with highest effective attack power on that character. Personally? I'd equip the ninja sword. It probably has a bonus to crit too (which you can check by examining the sword).
Make everyone a Valkyrie, buy Spears for everyone. You can't be hit while you're using Jump. On the next job level you get Crescent Moon which hits all enemies. Grind out a little bit and you won't be so squishy anymore. Then you can switch jobs for 2-3 of your other characters and let 1-2 Valkyries carry you for a bit.
Also, the Knight's 2-handed ability makes the Valkyrie even more potent.
Does the demo streetpass with the retail game? Was wondering if I should add some Euro MAC addresses to my Homepass router.

I'm in love with this game already!
Aye. Demo can streetpass retail. I've done it with a 2DS and 3DS, both demo, and a second 3DS with retail.
Open menu (x button) - Tactics - Config - Difficulty - Encounter Rate
lets you change the encounter rate at will with no penalty, good for grinding or for getting out of dungeons when you are all kinds of messed up and out of resources.
Play demo for bonuses. And theres some unique content apparently?
Play the game when it comes out for the 'totally new' experience?
The demo is not a 'section of the game' style, it is a reused location but the content in it is actually different from what is presented in the full game so you will not be spoiling anything other than a limited preview of a handful of jobs and enemies.
There is little to no story or character development in the demo that is from the full game. Demo is more a showcase for the technical side of the game, the combat and job system mostly while story and plot stuff is left to the main game.
Pretty much even if you play the demo the full game is still going to be a 'totally new' experience so might as well play both
From the demo you can transfer villagers (kinda important early on) and some early gear which will give you a nice but not overpowered start to the game.
Man... Kind of a pain in the bum to get this demo. Didnt know you had to link your NNID to download demos after the update. Couldnt remember my password... then the eshop wouldnt load. But then i remembered my password and the shop loaded. Demo was downloaded by the time I got out of the shower.

Also, Crescent Moon with Two-Handed is nice to lead off with
I dunno if I quite get the Default side of things just yet. Bravely? Hell yeah, take 4 actions at once and pray to god it's enough, lest you be a sitting duck. Default? Pass over my turn so I can potentially have 2 turns next round? I just never really understood that mechanic. Why would I waste a turn to do double damage when it's exactly the same to simply attack both turns? The math never tended to add up.

Default also gives you a pretty huge buff to defense, it is like the BLOCK or GUARD commands from older FF games with the added benefit of saving up Braves

Using Default also means you take less (I believe half) damage that turn.
Sometimes it's also not advisable for every character to act every turn. If your party is at full health, have your healer Default so that they'll have two actions next turn to patch the party up when they might need it.
Enemies also use Brave and Default, so it might occasionally be a good idea to hold your attacks and then go all out when your enemy is vulnerable.

Default also counts as a Guard, cutting the damage taken.
So if you've got a boss's pattern down and you know he's winding up for a big attack, it makes sense to Default to lower the damage you take and then punish him on the next turn.
Also, your dedicated healer can make good use of Defaults. They probably won't be worth much for attacking, but you don't need them to heal every turn either. So keep Defaulting the healer and then, on that turn just after the devastating attack, when you really need it, your healer can suddenly drop multiple heals and/or raise spells. Which can be useful.

The enemies tend to default before they hit you with heavier attacks, which is as good a tell as any

It can be said simpler. There's equipment with proficiency, and equipment without proficiency. This goes for the head-slot and the chest-slot. In addition, all shields have it, like all weapons.
Letter-grade says how much of the bonus you get.
While shopping, and while equipping, the blue and red numbers tell you what you need to know. Proficiency is accounted for.
About halfway through the demo (maybe after killing the second boss? I don't remember) you can talk to one of the NPCs in town to get another villager.

I'm not sure what I think of the demo. Its definitely the sort of demo that's enjoyable enough to make me want to NOT play the demo and wait for the full game. I know its a unique bit of content, but it isn't as if there's a ton of story or involvement to it. It was a nice sampler.
Been playing the demo and the Brave/Default system reminds me a small bit of the system from Radiant Historia, at least in the small terms of biding your time and turns to plan out some grand massive attack, can't wait to see how it plays out with more of the classes, the friend abilink system and such, though probably won't end as beautifully as a planned attack does in Historia, I forsee it will be a fun system to play with.
