I'm still going to stick to PC for Battlefield, because nothing this gen is going to beat 60-90fps at 1440p. But at least the gap is much, much narrower than last gen.

right; but you paid a premium for that quality. And good on you for it, but the fact that 400-500 gets you something in the neighborhood is honestly kind of stunning.

Also, I think the battlefield Kinect stuff looks kind of neat. I like the leaning out from cover thing not being a button.

Yes they can be bought - I think (or at least I didn't see them greyed out, unless they aren't there unless you do buy the Ultra Edition).

Prepare to play a LOT of Killer Instinct to unlock that stuff because it takes a lot of KP to do so. Especially if you want everything. Some of these things can be around 5000+ KP each and individual matches don't give you that much.

Edit: Minding if you're trying to get all the achievements, you'll probably do so anyone on your way to getting the 2000 completed match achievements per fighter.

Yeah, I didn't intend that to sound all "PC MASTER RACE" or anything. Just that given the option, that's one that has a history of being a better experience on a beefy PC (as opposed to, say COD or AC, which are very console-focused, as a rule). But it really does look super close between console and PC, compared to BF3. Like, shockingly so. Which is a really good thing for everyone.

Also, I hadn't seen the Kinect stuff yet, but that sounds kind of rad.

During the 12-minute-long Xbox One dashboard video, Xbox executives explained how Kinect is able to track the user even when they are seated.

EA Games has utilised this functionality to enable users to peek around cover and lean out to shoot, all using their bodies via Kinect.

There is a subtlety to the lean and peek functionality, but it makes a big difference to Battlefield 4. With previous titles in the series, like Battlefield 3 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, you couldn’t lean out of cover at all, meaning you would have to completely expose your character to enemy fire just to take a shot.

Kinect should make the lean and peak feature a lot easier too, as you can simply move your head to lean around cover and use the Xbox One Wireless Controller to do the rest.

“We have a pretty pragmatic view [on the new Kinect],” said Karl Magnus Troedsson, General Manager at DICE back in July. “Instead of just trying to tick all the boxes of features you can do with new hardware, we look at what actually adds value [for] our players.”

The Xbox One Kinect will also add voice commands to the Battlefield 4 experience, something that was already present in existing Battlefield entries.

You’ll be able to call for a medic, request or cancel request for ammo, hit your mates up for a lift or thank other players for their help.

I think that while the graphics are stunning and a great surprise to see how brilliant they are, the thing Im most excited about as a console battlefielder is 64 players. Thats the thing a lot of people are missing with this early next gen "It doesnt look that much better than last gen" stuff, its not just about texture res, its about gameplay-changing advances like 64 players in bf instead of 24.

And yeah definitely its not something to be excited about if you have a good PC, but my god are me and my battlefield console friends stoked about it, been console battlefielding since Bad Company and this is just hugely exciting.

That polygon review was really great, but this part particularly caught my eye:
Bad news first: the Xbox One's hefty lineup of exclusive titles isn't without its misses. Crimson Dragon is a disappointing follow-through on its potential as a successor to Panzer Dragoon. Lococycle is reprehensible in almost every way — it's racist, sexist, amateurish and monotonous. Ryse is beautiful but boring (and thankfully short).

That's a good description of Ryse, it's like stripping back everything that makes the Arkham games combat awesome to the bare basics and expecting it to hold up an entire game. They had a fair summary of the other games as well, though I didn't find the controls in Dead Rising 3 awkward at all (minding I played a LOT of the original two games).
But Microsoft has secured a comparatively large number of Xbox One exclusive titles for launch, assembling a lineup with broad appeal. Dead Rising 3 is technically impressive and a fun playground, with bad writing and so-so controls — but running from hundreds of zombies across the hoods of cars feels like a truly next-gen experience. Zoo Tycoon is a flawed but compelling game with a surprising amount of depth. Powerstar Golf is a simple but delightfully approachable casual golf game, filling the hole left by Sony's MIA Hot Shots Golf series. Killer Instinct is a pretty decent reboot for the long-dormant franchise, despite some trepidation about its business model. And Forza Motorsport 5 is the best of the bunch, a strong evolution for the series despite a reduced number of tracks and cars.

I realize I didn't get to play Zoo Tycoon (minding, I didn't see it last night). I really wanted to though.

    And I really noticed this:
The Xbox One is a hundred dollars more than its direct competition, and several third-party games run in lower resolution than they do on the PS4. Every exclusive title is beset by long load times. But Microsoft has managed to complement an otherwise competent collection of third party releases with a strong lineup of games that are only available on Xbox One.

I saw that yesterday, but now I think of it I didn't notice any problems with any of the third party games. I am infinitely pleased to see I was *not* going crazy though.
Kinect is also used for lots of little things throughout the Xbox One's user experience. Profiles support fast facial recognition for sign-in. Once a profile has a face associated with it, the console will sign that person in whenever they sit in front of the console — it even says hello. Controllers sync automatically based on who's holding them. There was a frequent sense of "holy crap" among Polygon editors regarding the Xbox One. We were constantly surprised by what the system could distinguish, by all the small but smart usability enhancements provided by Kinect. It feels futuristic and cool in a way that little else about the new consoles does.

The facial recognition and ability to instantly sign people in by recognizing them sounds immensely impressive. Probably the best thing I have heard about the kinect integration so far.

Haha ewww, but then again, its not microsofts fault, if the company wants to be a dick about things its their funeral. Im waiting for a game to come out that requires you to say horrible things in order for it to launch or progress.

It's in the Polygon review, but apparently the Kinect needs you to say the whole thing to work. For example you can't say "Xbox Ryse" you have to say "Xbox Ryse: Son of Rome" or the full title for it to start the game. So if a company names their app something stupidly long, you need to say the whole thing for it to work.

It's probably a licensing thing for applications and a branding thing for the games. If Ryse becomes a franchise it'll have to be distinguished from other members of the franchise.

I wanted to like Ryse since it's a launch title but I have yet to hear a single good thing about it.

Lots of little details that don't make sense coming out with these reviews.

-Stereo sound only for cable box integration
-Can only play your own playlist music with the XBox Music app snapped to a section of the screen
-Kinect voice control is as finicky as before
-Unable to see how much storage space remains
-"XBox Record That" is limited to the last 28 seconds.

I don't know how much of that stuff can be fixed, and I guess it doesn't matter if you just want to play games on it.

Some of these issues sound like new console issues and just being unfamiliar. I had to admit, I had to hunt around to figure out where achievements and similar were hidden, but that's because it's not just the previous gen console with new stuff.

The Verge review pretty much rips it apart...and then gives it a 7.8. Same goes for the Wired and Eurogamer reviews, they blast a bunch of functions and then give it a score that doesn't really reflect what they said.

To be honest, I think it's mostly about getting used to the UI and if people can be bothered getting the most out of it with the Kinect. The Kinect - like just about every discussion post E3 in this thread - is a divisive/contentious part of the system. Some reviewers love it and some are more luke warm about it. For example, non-US sources where many of the Kinect TV and voice features won't be functional at launch are going to be very different in tone.

Edit: And really, I don't mean to bring that all up again but the Kinect is much less value for consumers outside of the US due to many of its functions not being at launch outside of certain places. So when reading reviews you need to bear this in mind.

I used it once, because they gave me a free rental. It was the most terrible stream I've experienced on the 360 or PS3 by a good distance. It was stuttering at 480, and never threatened to go up from that.

I have noticed that every single one of these hardware reviews just about is warning people to stay away from Ryse and praising Forza 5 (I've seen a couple of "Best of the launch titles" statements in there). A sneaky way of getting around the embargo?

Edit: Yep, foreign = more negative review (because of lack of Kinect features outside of US) and US = more favourable (as the TV features are a compelling part). Called that straight after E3.

I mean, the absolutely rational thing to do would be to wait a year, play all the really great last gen games you missed for cheap, and then dive in when the software gets better.

I also got an iPad 1. A launch day Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox, and Xbox 360. And I loved them all despite their flaws.

    I am not very rational.

I never expected any outlet to be like OMG BUY ME NOW, so i dont even care, I'm watching the polygon review right now and i'm giddy, I know now that consoles dont launch like they did back in the old days.

They say it right in the review, The Xbox One feels like its from the future, with the iteration Microsoft has been doing on the 360, and hopefully with just a bit more frequency on this console, they could prove to put themselves in a position where people that dont "JUST PLAY GAMES" would like to own this console.

This.... is a pretty good opinion currently. 3DS is fairly amazing! Best console on the market right now I think.

Curious to see the scores Forza gets tomorrow, people are sneaking in "this is the best game" into the various system reviews so that bodes well. Probably end up around high 80s because of the lack of cars and tracks compared to FM4 even though the comparison point should probably be FM2 (where it loses in cars, but wins in tracks)

it depends on your TV also. Most televisions have a discreet "on" and "off" IR command, and depending on how much they let you program how the xbox one communicates with your stuff... I don't see that being a problem.

Gotcha, Polygon also said something about how awesome AA battery life is, which is heartening, even though i plan on getting a play and charge. They bemoan the lack of kinect integration in launch games, but gush about when it works, and the fact its also monitoring when you set your controller down to save battery life.

I'm nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking here really, I'm sure I'll enjoy the console.

also, sure its been mentioned, but smartglass for the One is live now on IOS and Android. You cant do jack without a console, but I took the anticipatory step and downloaded it anyway. :D

Edit: Polygon i dont think mentioned that microsoft has been telling these people its in beta, and a day one patch is coming like Kotaku mentioned, so who knows, i know they both support shifting review scores though. (first impressions and all that jazz though.)
