ryse is so much better than I thought it was going to be
seriously, why did this game get such a bad rap
because a lot of the gaming press got hung up on the very bad first showing at E3*, and a lot of others confused simple with shallow**.
the game is decisive, but i don't think its bad by any reasonable standard. though for what its worth, i've really enjoyed the game and am still working my way through it and am looking forward to a sequel(no matter how likely that is).
*the games first showing was poor and eve Crytek have admitted they they could have done better.
**the combat is simple, there's not doubt about it, but it find depth in that you need to time every attack, block, counter and dodge perfectly.
it's a bloody version of the arkham games, with the filler cut out. I remember people getting hung up on the QTEs that seemed to comprise the game, but honestly I love the combat. it's deep enough to where I want to get better, and honestly the story isn't that bad so far. I remember people harping on it when reviews first hit it's pretty neat, to me anyways.
on a separate note, is there a way to disable hand tracking/gesture control? I like to use my laptop while watching netflix, but often the kinect interprets my hands typing as me trying to activate motion controls... which can be annoying.
The thing is there is not really quick time events in ryse, it's just a reward for getting someone to low health through a pretty typical hack and slash timed blocks and attacks game. You switch between 4 bonuses for getting the timing on executions right, so even then there's strategy, like do you go for a health bonus or boost your slowtime charge, etc. it's not deep, but it's not shallow by any stretch.
Also I may be a teeny bit addicted to the arena. I got two 100+ combos in one round, with over 100,000 points at the end, was pretty damn satisfying. Also co-op arenas have some good use of team play, especially when you have to work together to cut off a traitor.
Basically it's the only roman style action game out there at the moment, so that's its selling point for me. It's pretty as hell, the story is simple but clear and concise, framed well (something triple a blockbusters sometimes bork), and the arena mode is fun. It really comes down to whether or not you want a swords and sandals hack and slash.
There's a fair bit of visual variety in the campaign which helped make it feel satisfying for me, and I usually tire of campaigns that go for longer than 6-8 hours anyway. On anything but the lowest difficulty it's definitely not an interactive cutscene, you will die if you don't pay attention to enemy types and your timing.
The negative reviews are something which I can vaguely understand, but i feel like the game is so inoffensive and competent at what it does that you really just have to not be in the mood for it in order to actively rail against it as opposed to just shrugging your shoulders. It's kind of not worth scoring negatively, if that makes sense? I think that's my perspective on video games, I tend to add points for what things do right rather than look for negatives.
It also struck a pretty good supernatural tone for some of it, which I enjoyed, definitely looking forward to a sequel. If you're on the fence I can't think of anything to make you leap off, but if the price goes down I recommend checking it out.
Frankly it's the kind of game that a demo would be perfect for, as it seems people who try it seem pleasantly surprised more often than not.
Also goddamn the trophy image when you record a game clip is annoying, I keep thinking I'm getting an achievement.
yeah my friend wanted to try it and I had gift cards to burn on amazon, so it was a no brainer. they really should get more demos on this thing, I feel like I would have picked it up sooner if I had known it was so good. BTW amazon has most xbone games at ~$50, including ryse.

What difficulty are you playing on?
I might actually work on levelling my glad tomorrow... only 30 more to go before 10!
The weird thing about the Arena is they use the Spartacus TV show style dialect there, but not in the campaign. "prepare to have head separated from body!"
But then again, could you imagine the criticisms they'd get if they used that dialect in the main campaign? ha.

That's because you didn't turn on party chat! You joined the party, but didn't join the chat. Stupid, I know.
So, Forza 5. It's not a game that I like. I know I'll be stoned for my opinion, but I just can't get into it. Why do I always start a race in 14th place? Is there no way to qualify for a better starting spot?
It just seems like it's a race to the clusterfuck at the first corner, and the race is over after that.
The one thing I wish was that the arena wasnt just the two barbarian races, I wish you could fight preatorians and other gladiators. If the DLC has that I might consider buying it.
I would totally buy an arena pack that had like war elephants and lions and other gladiators, as well as being able to choose the look of your own gladiator beyond just booster packs of armour and weapons.

After playing around with it a while, I've found no smooth way to integrate any of my HTPCs with the xbox one AND retain their ability to play steam games without lag seemlessly without wading through menus to disable certain audio outputs or what not. It kinda kills this whole "entire house connected" thing I've got going on. SOOOOO I've orderd a WD TV Live to be used to stream video to my xbone, the WD TV Live will belong solely to the xbone. Anybody have any experience with this?

Yeah, it's super laggy (few hundred ms) - best to not even try to game through it.
WDTV live should work great, but I don't think the XBO kinect ir blaster will control it.

Honestly, career mode is a giant clusterfuck. However, MP, freeplay, Rivals, and so on? Car worship at its finest. The drivatars can't help being morons. We made them that way. But Rivals is just an amazing mode, and where I honestly spend most of my time.

Playing Forza 5 has made my desire to get a 2013 Hyundai Elantra even greater. I bought an '05 new that year and still drive it today (only has 43k miles on it), really like it but the sexy as fuck interior on the '13 Genesis in Forza 5 is amazingly detailed and I know the new Elantra's pretty much look exactly the same.

Has anyone had any issues with connecting the Xbone to a Motorola DVR? Mine was working flawlessly for about a day and a half, then today the signal seemed to pause every 30 seconds or so, and now I get no picture at all. I reset the cable box (twice), and turned on/off the console, but no dice. Everything's connected via HDMI, so that shouldn't be an issue.
I do have a cable technician coming out either tomorrow or Friday to swap boxes, but I wanted to know if there's anything I should try before then.

Well, I just sold my Xbox 360. I have an Xbox One reserved for in store pickup tomorrow. Can't wait. Still trying to determine what games to pick up first, but I have the night to sleep on it.
I added a bunch of people from the OP via xbox.com which I think still uses the 360 system of accepting friend requests. if you're in the list and haven't been on 360 or the website recently, you may have some pending friend requests.
The only thing I've noticed that requires the kinect in order to work, bizarrely, seems to be the upload studio.
Also my favourite Ryse gladiator arena taunts:
"prepare to meet death you vile heap of cow shit! "lick my boots hog lover!"
Also the Kinect is required as a 3rd party work around for chat audio in some gaming headsets right now, though much like the PS4, is waiting a future update to remove that.
I think the forza 5 infrastructure is dead , multiplayer and leaderboards are all down , so no rivals for me. Spent all last night trying to beat my best on B class prague, and I did! 2.06.XX Kinda want someone on my friends list to beat it so I have an excuse to go back to Prague. Think im kinda getting the hang of tuning , kinda , sorta , maybe. That said I think I did a really good job on B class 07 Shelby and A class GT40. Just search for Onyx Vanguard /end shameless plug.
Edit- If I could be added to the master list that would be awesome , or you guys could just add me individually.
I bought the ultimate or ultra edition of KI. Where is my KI classic?
Quit the game and restart your system. Once you start the game again you should have the option to download Ki Classic.
Eventually I gave up and started dicking around with Mario 3D World. When I came back to the Xbone earlier today, the download started.
That... is a pretty terrible way of doing things. Aside from having to restart the entire machine to get a download going, there was no prompt about where or how to do this. I've been finding the entire UI really confusing, like it assumes an intimate familiarity without really explaining or making things obvious. I'm having the same problem with the PS4 UI, which seems to be like a never-ending, growing linear list of everything you own, unorganized.

I vastly prefer Steam's BPM UI or the XMB.
I haven't had to do that for anything; it may just be KI. The closest that's happened is the expectable "Hey, this needs an update..." on launch of something. Then again, the only games I'm really testing this on are Forza/Lego Marvel. I think I had to relaunch Forza to get it to pick up on a DLC purchase, but I'm also using that beta "save game state" thing in settings, so I'm willing to forgive it.
coming off the 360 to the XB1 does feel like a step back in someways. I agree it's annoying there's no download/storage management, which was easy to see and use on 360. also, now that friends and achievements are apps it feels oddly segregated from the game. I liked that the guide button on 360 let me quickly pull up my friends and achievements and go right back into my game. plus you can't snap achievements so you have to load it up everytime. it all feels less intuitive despite snapping and switching being pretty neat.
I am sure the spring update (if they plan to update regularly like the 360 dashboard was) could address a lot of these things. I also wish you could set custom voice commands. so I could say "xbox snap amazon" instead of "xbox snap amazon instant video". independent volume control on each snap would be nice, but not really sore about that since I rarely snap two things with sound running.
don't take this as me hating on it either, I actually like the 'tiles' setup better than I thought I would. it just needs to be fleshed out a bit so things make sense again. plus, I will say having used the first kinect, the new one is so much responsive and accurate. you just have to speak clearly and a bit louder than normal to make sure it hears you.
Thats where I am as well, the dashboard went through so many updates through the life of the console that im not worried about the few gripes I have about this one.

I've downloaded six games, some with or without DLC, and I've never had that happen.
You should understand that having to reboot to start a download is not the way it works.
HOWEVER, one point of confusion for a lot of people is that it can say "downloading" and stay parked at 0% for a long fucking time. If that is happening, it is actually downloading, but it is grabbing the patch ahead of the game itself, and the percentage doesn't move. They need to fix the messaging on this because it is confusing, but thats what's happening.

KI is the only game that requires this. If you buy the Ultimate edition it will not queue the download until you restart your system. It unlocks the characters first but doesn't know how to queue the KI classic download without a reboot.
