Is the hydra at the start supposed to be so absurdly easy to kill? I climb up to one of it's heads and it popped off with one hit and the battle ended. It seemed like a glitch.

Yeah, you're beating a hydra by cutting of a head. Game is pulling its punches.
I am of the mentality that you have to take off all of the heads. I am old school.
I looked at a walkthrough and it looks like I missed a bunch of side quests by advancing the story. I may start over.
It is cool they also have the Ur-Dragon in single player.
Edit: Meh. Looking at it some more, it seems like the quests were really minor. I already did the first wagon escort mission. I really do not want to do that again.

They're not minor, actually. You can miss some important story stuff. And, if I recall right, a neat item later on.
Restart before you get too invested.
I'll give you a tip about harpies.
Taunt draws them to you.

Buying throwblasts from the general store in Cassardis will make your life a lot easier early on.
They'll blow away many enemies you can't effectively damage early game because of high physical defense.

Also if you happen to be a wizard, invest in the staff charge attack as soon as you can get it. Cast an enchant on yourself and charge up the attack.
It's basically a magic shotgun.
I actually plan to come back to this game with my characters swapped around (so I'm playing Matatabi, with my warrior as my pawn), on hard, with a magic only character. Just as a challenge. A true magic glass cannon.
I have a feeling it is not going to be anywhere near as difficult as it sounds.
Cos dat staff.

Hmm. I will have to look at the quests I did. I have already done the one with the well now.
Have you had a quest to go the witch woods up the hill and at the end of the road just after the fort where you fight the hydra?
Yes. I have not done it yet. I went up the path the had the bandits and the boulders, but they were too hard so I ran away.
You almost got it! Good instincts, Krathoon. Now, run the opposite direction.
The main damaging enemy is a fighter, not the archers. That fighter hurts so bad. Kite him.
Yeah. I tried just fighting them numerous times. He keeps taking me down. I have geared up now, so I may try him out again.
I have the chief running around with me. It is weird.
Man, there is a bunch of hidden stuff in this game. I think I found everything in Cassardis. Caught the burglar too. It seems like the sidequests don't get blocked.
I also went to the DLC island, but backed out of it. Not high enough level for it.
I also now have a viking helmet and enhanced the weapons for my pawn and I.

That reminds me. One of my Dragon's Dogma videos had this little story.
Tom robertson:
I'm killing my first [redacted] now; im level 22 and have one stuck in a doorway an hour through and i've downed 3 bars of its health using nothing but comestion and sixfold bolt; i think i am doing this wrong; i will endure though!
Morninglord22:
no you are doing good
the thing is you are not supposed to be level 22
Tom robertson:
I killed it. Gained at least 5 levels, no good loot though, only took under three hours

Just in case you don't want to know I'll put it in spoilers.

Ha. I got Ardo killed. I did not know about cancelling his escort quest. It sounds like he respawns though.
The Watergod's Altar was too much for him. I just happened upon that place.
Takes about a week for NPCs but his quest might not pop up until NG+.
Yeah. It is just an escort quest though. It sounds like they don't branch off into anything. I also have a quest where I have to talk to him about the witch woods. He may have already respawned.
Do NOT pick up Adaro's escort quest: Guardsman Sought at the same time as the quest; Lost and Found as this will potentially bug out Lost and Found. The player will be unable to speak with Adaro regarding Quina's returning regardless if the escort quest is finished, X amount of time has passed, or even killing Adaro.
No possible solution has been found, please refrain from starting both quests at the same time!
Looks like I will have to roll back to a checkpoint. Not a huge deal.
Asked if Capcom has other PlayStation 4 titles coming out, outside of what’s already been announced, Takeuchi replied: “Of course. Right now, we’re seeing how far we can push the game engine. You’ll be surprised by the quality of the games we’re working on right now.
“I think we’ll be able to announce it soon, so please look forward to it. I realize that’s obnoxious (laughs).
“It’s gonna be something that will even turn heads overseas.”

Fighting the dragon solo as a warrior is easily the highlight of this game for me. Shit was epic as fuck. It took me forever. It was in no way efficient or effective.
But it was my story. Mine.
Nobody can ever take that victory away from me. I earned it.
That whole approach really sums up this game for me.

Specially if you do all the Wyrm Hunt quests. Lack of new gear hurts there.
Na, that's when it's at it's best, when you are scrapping every bit of gear and mats for upgrades for that little extra effort.
Though, that might be because right after all the Wyrm Hunt quests is when it starts to lose that real "venture forth at ye own peril" risk to it, at least for me. I mean, the game does a great job at introducing new monsters right before it gets *too* easy, but nothing compares to those first few hours where every step in the wilderness is a gamble.

There's new game plus-stuff, anyway, so messing up hardly matters. Can just beast through the parts you don't like if you want another lap.

By the way, does that hydra actually die or just peace out? I remember it getting away.

Yes, you get a few benefits. Among those is the Eternal Ferrystone.

Few of my gaming moments ever live up to playing Dragon's Dogma. Nothing like it.
