I'm still under level 100. And still kind of torn on what I want to turn myself into in terms of a wrecking ball of fury for Bitter Black Isle. I've only gone through a bit of that place, and I've gotten absolutely stomped more than a few times.
No matter which way I go I'll need to get better gear, so I'm not really any better off no matter which way I go.
I love the Magic Knight and Magic archer classes. But I also like the standard bow/dagger classes as well. The ability to snipe things from nearly any visible range comes in ridiculously handy, and none of the magic classes can truly replicate that.
On the other hand, sorcerer is pretty fun at high levels too. Especially when you can either plant a big spell in the middle of a whole bunch of monsters, or right on top of one of the big critters.
But I usually need to rely on a fighter/warrior pawn to keep things off me for a great deal of the game that way... and they can be less than useful at that role.
I need to get my UR dragon farm on no matter which way I go, so I've still got some work to do to get there.

Im pretty sure sorcerers can kill things from the farthest away. Tornadoes are cool like that
It's not always about killing things though. Doing the witchwood stuff without being able to aim attacks is a pain in the ass.
Golems are the worst yes. The only enemy explicitly designed to interfere with sorcerers ability to murder everything. Indeed the only enemy designed as a hard counter to any specific class. The sorcerer is just too strong
Am I doing it wrong not taking an advanced vocation? Sticking with Mage so far.
The Advanced vocations are really useful for unlocking the more powerful Augments (e.g. Mage lets you unlock one that gives +10% Magick Attack, Sorcerer gives one for +20%). But really, play what you want, and swap as often as you want. I did Strider for awhile, then assassin for a bit, then Sorcerer for awhile, and spent the rest of my time (all of end/post game) as a Magick Archer.

The other base classes fare better than mage since you aren't relying on your pawns to do the bulk of the damage.
Strider is still more proficient at climbing on and stabbing big monsters than assassin or magic archer. Fighter is tankier than Warrior who has to ditch shields and all one handed weapons in favor of the super slow two handers.
Mage is still a handy class to have due to all its support but it's better on a pawn than the player.
I ran into the big beholder in Bitterblack. Couldn't dent him. Took this as a sign to leave, as above, back to Everfall.
I switched to Sorcerer since I was out.
Go to Everfall. Find a smaller beholder. Can't dent it either.
I may have messed up leveling to 50 as a Mage...
Those enemies are fought differently than normal
BBI eye gazer is kill the stalks until the eye pops out and nuke it. Eventually it'll try a magic symbol lile attack. Kill the stalls powering it and shoot the energy ball to do hideous damage.
The beholder in the everfall also has a barrier spell up. It drops sometimes and it has to recast it. I just grabbed onto its face and mauled it at that point. Up until then, just plinked it with shots to see if it took damage, killed the stalks coming out of the ground, and avoided its spells.

If you're really stuck on BBI, try Magick Archer. It's somewhat OP in there.

While it isn't as important as people used to say, Mage is one of the least good to stick with for levelling.
Health and Stamina are the biggest obstacles, since you don't get much of them outside of levelling.

Try adding levels of the melee classes.
Fighter for good phyiscal attack and HP; Strider for all around; Warrior for extra HP and attack; Assassin for lots of physical attack; or Ranger for lots of stamina.
Gear is the most important thing but BBI will help you level up fast in any of those.
Mystic Knight and Magic Archer are not so great for stat growth for you at the moment but you can try them. They are fun.
-Different classes do give different level up bonuses. Fairly significant ones too.
-It's only the first 100 levels that have the biggest impact though. 101-200 increases are very minor.
-Level up stats don't terribly mean much in the end anyways. Like 75% of your total stats will be coming from your gear anyways. Bump that up to 90% when you get into the brokenness of Bitterblack items.
I'm using this stat guide as I level for a fairly balanced build, but it honestly doesn't matter terribly much. You're not going to be gimped to hell if you leveled as a mage your entire life then suddenly change to a warrior. So long as you spend the money/effort into getting the gear for it.

Unlocking Augments is the biggest part of the class system. Figure out which ones you really want and play those classes to get 'em.
Xeddicus, the purification of gear is tied to the vocation you have. So if you are a mage you are gonna get robes, staffs and rings that improve spellcasting.
Doing the board quest should hand you gear for the other classes but I don't recall any of those being weapons.

Did you play the whole game as a mage?

Different stat progressions mainly. The base 3 have more balanced progressions though. Definitely try some of the others out though. They all feel fun

I think you probably want to at least dip into one of them for the stat boosts and the passive skills.

roll sorcerer at the bare minimum
Back to Everfall!
mages are a support class so unless you have a set of really rockin' pawns you're kneecapping your team's efficacy
sorcerer has all the dick-swinging spells

You need some Physical attack and defense.

Attack are important stats before you start getting Bitterblack-loot.
Xeddicus, in case you need extra damage the blonde merchant lady sells periapts. Those give you a boost your stats and stack up to 4 times.
Conqueror - Physical Attack
Demon - Magic Attack

You can do a hybrid that makes it to ~500 raw atk/mag but it's probably better to just focus on one.
The trick is that when you don't meet the threshold to damage enemies over their defense, you're doing no damage.
Doing the board quest should hand you gear for the other classes but I don't recall any of those being weapons.

...I really like the game.
I made progress, so there's that. I had no idea there were like 200 levels. At least this gives me time to switch classes.
