    Welcome to Malifaux.

No seriously, when you're working with HIPS you need to either simplify your sculpt or have more parts. Wyrd opt for more parts and more complicated models.

The great part is you get super dynamic models and due to the nature of the game you only ever build them once outside of some niche spam, usually on summoners. The downside is you get heads in 5 parts and separate feet and that sort of thing.

Putting my Reva crew together today had me worrying more than usual. I've never seen a horse come in so many parts, and I see her soul candles losing parts every time they see the table.

If it helps, I lost half of the lawyer's cane snipping if off the sprue.

Since your name means "swedish" in swedish, I just assumed you were, ya know, swedish.

It is comforting to hear I'm not alone in my struggles. In the morning light it doesn't seem so bad and I'm sure this won't actually hold me back from anything. Let's wait and see how it goes when I try painting the teeny tiny bastards!

Stupid excited to hopefully get my first game in on Tuesday. This game has really flicked my obsession switch this last week and I've been thinking about little else.

Come 'ere son, @Jam Warrior, stay a while and listen.

Let Poppa Quarter tell ya story about a certain Gremlin model called Old Cranky. He's a terrific (OP) generic Gremlin totem. He looks like an elderly hillbilly gremlin smoking a pipe.

Here's the pipe... get a single model sprue and compare it, that pipe will fit under your pinky nail.

He really is broke to shit, too, this is just the front of his goddamn card. Like fuck off other totems, Cranky's got this.
    Old%2BCranky%2B-%2BStat%2BCard%2B%25281%2529.JPG

PS- he has Abuela Ortega's Shotgun as a ranged weapon. All for 4 stones.

Fuck his beard. The worst mini I can think of working on is the illuminated with the monster hovering over him. Turns out you can glue some pieces together without fitting in another one inside, and ruin the mini. First and only time I've ever done that

Yan Los beard gets a bad rap because people leave it off until they've attached his head to his body which combines a really small bit with a really awkward attach point. If you attach the beard to his chin before putting the head on the body it's just another tiny bit among tiny bits.

Build enough Malifaux models and you'll come across bits just as bad or worse frequently. Just come up with a strategy for getting small parts off the sprue without them flinging across the room. I like to hold them with my other hands thumb and index finger while I clip the connectors. Also some rubber tipped tweezers will help a lot.

Finally got my LE Bayou Gator. Like the models in the box, Gators chewing on Gremlins come with an alternate, Gremlin free head. I like the heads chewing on Gremlins, but they also make it rather easy to swap about since they attach to little pags on the neck, so I'm going to paint both heads.

Finished putting together my Plastcraft Swamp Hut and Walkways. Walkways are huge, though I think overall the set needed one more low platform so all of the stairs would reach making it completely accessible. I love this stuff though. Next up I'm getting the Carnival stuff.

    That set looks really good!

My Reva crew came in the other day, and a lot of the models feel like a step backwards for Wyrd. While Reva and her corpse candles are fine, the three shieldbearers have terrible detail. The male one in particular had this semi-melted looking face with only one ear, and this maybe it's hair maybe not thing, it's really a shame.

My Jack Daw crew that I got before ordering Reva's might be making a big comeback.

That sounds like a bad cast more than anything else. I haven't heard anyone saying that about Reva and that's the sort of stuff that would be making the rounds. Take some photos and do Wyrds return form and see what happens.

I won! Only two figures left on the board so I was fucked if there was a sixth turn but I just managed 6-5 for victory. My opponent had the Viktorias and ouch they hurt. Viktoria Prime red jokered Dashel and he was dead before much of anything. I had the 'Frame for Murder' scheme and my nominated victim was murdered by Vik Prime on turn one so I was off to a good start. Lucius survived to the end and had the upgrade that let him flip nearby schemes at game end which swung it my way in a particularly delicious manner.

Well amped to play more. A bit underwhelmed by the guardsman though, perhaps I wasn't leveraging synergies enough. They all seem to need your guys to be in one big blob for the buffs to trigger and that didn't seem a good plan when the ninja whirlwind was approaching fast.

    Congrats on the win!

That's the great thing about Malifaux. It's possible to win even if your opponent tables you. Objectives are important, not killing enemies. Like, killing enemies makes objectives easier, but it's not the sole part to focus on.

And yeah, the Viktorias hurt. I remember my first game I thought I was being all tricksy and used Liliths Lure to lure my brothers Viktoria of Ashes into melee to triger an auto attack from her living blade. The living blade missed and then Ashes just ripped Lilith to peices.

If one crew gets tabled before game end, does the other just get the remaining turns on their own to finish up schemes?

I sent them an email, guess I'll hope for a replacement.

Played a 20 point game with Vincent, 2 shieldbearers and a flesh construct, and won against a candy led list. Felt good to get back into the game after a bit of a break.

If an attack ability also has a target number, and after first flips the attacker is technically winning on total but hasn't yet hit his target, the defender still has to cheat or not first, right? That's a bit mean and one to remember. Fairly certain we did that wrong last night.

    edit - oops

Page 26. Choose to Cheat Fate.

Each model now has the option to cheat fate.

The model with the lower duel total must choose whether or not to cheat first. If the models duel totals are tied then the Defender must choose whether or not to cheat fate first.

So if the Attacker hasn't met his target, but still has a total more than the Defender, the Defender cheats first.

Also, Monday Preview was more Monday News.
    Hey everyone,

GenCon has come and gone! A lot of our year is the build-up to GenCon, which means that you've now seen most of what we're able to show! As such, Monday Previews are going to become fewer and further between, at least for awhile. We'll keep the news coming, though, as there are plenty of things happening around Wyrd.

For now, I just have one "preview" for you -- we have commissioned the creation of a Malifaux App! If everything goes well, we are hoping for a release by the end of the year. I can't promise that, but we think it can be done. For now, though, just know that it's entering development!
Heh, before too much speculation goes on - he's talking crew, cards, tournament app, with some other goodies thrown in. Not a full on 'play Malifaux online' game. Though truth be known, we've been tossing that about as well ..

So I'm already musing on what to buy next for Lucius' crew. Guild riflemen or Austringers seem highly recommended for ranged damage. But then Witchling Stalkers seem a good idea for their explosive deaths given my high likelihood of facing Melee centric Viks again. And putting people in coffins with Death Marshals just looks like fun. Any recommendations?

Austringers are great. Don't be put off by their low damage track on their Raptor attack. It's got some great things going for it, namely Sh7 and ignoring LoS and cover. This means you can attack from behind a building. Also Sh7 is pretty huge. Not much has Df 7 outside of Masters, so you'll generally need one or two lower than your opponent to just draw. You also have a pretty great Obey with Deliver Orders. If there's not much for the Austringer to do, they can get someone else in the crew nearby to push a short distance then perform a (1) action.

For 6 stones, Austringers are pretty fantastic.

But for Lucius, basically any minons.

Tactics question - if you're already engaged, is it generally better to hit twice or focus and hit once? Hitting twice gives you two chances at the damage track but chances are you'll be on a negative for damage so you will likely not get a high damage hit, but focus first and hit once potentially puts you on a flat damage flip which you can cheat.

Also, I don't have the Ripples of Fate book yet but from what I've read, we may be in for some updated master sculpts, which I'm guessing they did since it's good fodder for Black Friday alt sculpts and tournament prizes. Spoilers for those that want to read it themselves in the book.
Von Schill lost an arm and leg when Titania escaped Nythera and got mechanical replacements. That would make one badass miniature.
The Dreamer has been spotted in normal clothes rather than pyjamas and older.
Apparently Sonia could need one? Maybe she no longer needs her mask and can go back to her 1E look?

Oooh, a Pathfinder with some traps could be fun for slowing Viks down. I just want them all!

So I mentioned earlier that I'd managed to come into some Outcast and Guild - well, I've been having a bit of trouble identifying some of the models I got hold of, so was wondering if any of you might be able to help me figure out what exactly they are.

    These first four look like they were created using the multi-parts miniature set, so not that much of a mystery (but I'm open to being told otherwise);
    lFtydAC.jpg?1

This is a bit trickier. Maybe a Guild model?
    s07HhDc.jpg

And this final one's definitely confusing me. Freikorps head, looks like it's wearing gauntlets of some kind, with a cape? Could be a really well done kitbash of something if it's not an actual model. It's been undercoated but it's definitely plastic.

Depends on lot on the pieces involved. If your target has Hard to Wound, go for quantity of hits. If they have armor, quality is probably better (unless they have enough to reduce your damage to 1).

And of course if you don't have any 11+s or are saving them for summons, you're not gonna want to cheat damage. Or maybe you're getting down to the dredges of your deck and haven't seen your red joker, so hitting 2-3 card damage flips could actually be a huge swing.

Yeah, definitely multipart plastic kit made. If you get the cards from the PoD service they'd make great Latigo Pistoleros, Guild Guard, Deperate Mercenaries etc.

  • BurnageBurnage Registered User regular
    Cheers guys.

Got to say I'm massively impressed by the quality of the multi-part kit models.

The biggest crime on those multipart models is the way he's seemingly ripped them off the sprue and not done any cleanup before building them. Those sprue scars are horrendous and mar what are otherwise pretty cool combinations of parts.

I was going to buy Latigo Pistoleros but considering I've got 2 of each multipart set in the cupboard waiting for Christmas, I think I'm going to make my own out of those and order the cards. That way I can annoy people with a totally non-standard Guild crew - alt Perdita, Santana, Miss Terious, alt Francisco and some custom Latigo Pistoleros. Maybe also custom build a Nino. Downside is I'll be short an Enslaved Nephilim and Papa Loco, and those two are super pricey on Gadzooks..

Dashel also get an upgrade in Ripples of Fate that gives him an action calledArrest them', which summons a Guild Guard in base to base contact with zone target.

I hope this is a worthwhile thing to have. Currently feeling a bit sad that Guild Guard are awesome figures, but suffer being jacks of all trades, master of none. Once I have enough figures to not require them I find it hard to see me picking them over the plentiful other cheap minion options Guild have.

Malifoo Number Two, and I'm officially in serious :heartbeat: with this game.

A rematch against the Viks from last week and I won again, 6:4. He had picked the Escort scheme with Master Vik as the nominated figure, and then got over excited at getting her into combat and charged right into the centre of my crew who then dog piled on her and killed her. I had picked Distract and absolutely loved the agonising choices it forced on him as to whether to attack or clear the condition.

Man but there's a lot to think about in a Mali game though. Got right to the end before realising I'd not been doing my Lawyers' 0 AP defence buff all game. And Dashel ended up being a very expensive scheme runner off alone in the back field.

I'm now looking at all kinds of custom tokens and card sets and such. I've finally found a lifestyle game that I love and have plentiful opponents for! Giddy with glee.

    MhCw7nZ.gif
  • -Loki--Loki- Don't pee in my mouth and tell me it's raining. Registered User regular
Nothing wrong with an expensive model being a scheme runner if that's what you need them to do. In fact, expensive models are often chosen since they have attack abilities that let them easily deal with enemy scheme runners.

Like, if there's Dark Ritual (I think that's the name, the one where you need to put scheme markers in the corners) you're likely going to have your scheme runners run into enemy scheme runners on the flanks. In that case, it's good to have a fast moving expensive model with good offensive abilities (for Neverborn, Coppelius is popular) can give you the edge in getting those schemes down.

  • Jam WarriorJam Warrior Registered User regular
Yeah but Dashel is neither fast moving nor hard hitting. His high cost comes from his Guardsman buffing auras, not much use while he's off on his own.

    MhCw7nZ.gif
  • -Loki--Loki- Don't pee in my mouth and tell me it's raining. Registered User regular
I was using Coppelius as a specific example of an expensive scheme runner, but still. The games rather fluid. Sometimes you think you need a piece like Dashel to buff your Guardsmen, and then it turns out they're doing fine and there's other things he can do like go for schemes he can reach.

Still waiting for my Gencon order. it was only fulfilled last week, and as of last Friday the tracking number says it's been sitting in New Jersey. So either the tracking number hasn't been updated, or it's really been sitting there for nearly a week without moving :(

They've said in the past, what they've done, is print out all of the orders in order of placement, then divide it into stacks for each person in the warehouse. This means that people who ordered early could end up on the bottom of a stack and go out later while those that ordered late could end up on the top of a stack and go out earlier.

I ordered on day 1, so I guess I was just unlucky enough to end up on the bottom of a stack.

  • SvenskaSvenska Registered User regular
That seems like crappy cust. service.

Hoping to take Reva out for a spin tomorrow night if my opponent can make it to the store. I'd like it to be Lucius or Jack Daw, but I ordered the carrion emissary and I'd like to get some resser practice in for when he shows up.
