I really just didn't like the AC3 world. The environment just felt wrong somehow, but I'm not sure how. The cities were obvious... it was a lot harder to travel on rooftops across Boston or New York leaving you beating feet on the streets more often. But the open world was a bit less fun for whatever reason. Maybe because running around a forest just isn't as fun, whereas pirating around the ocean is a fucking blast.
Nails it for me. Part of what I love about AC games is the setting, and traversing the setting. The Frontier wasn't bad, but it was far too sparse in its distractions. Collectibles which were there for nothing more than a trophy, a few boring hunting missions, and a few semi interesting campfire missions. The cities, while nice looking, weren't fun at all to traverse. You couldn't stay on the rooftops for very long, which is a hallmark of the series, due to massively wide streets, very few 'joining' peices like lines, and guards who find it an affrond to God if both feet leave the ground.
In the cities, it wasn't very clear what to do - Liberation missions weren't explained particularly well, forts I don't even remember seeing a tooltip for which is odd considering they were a large part of the game, and city forts weren't introduced until pretty late.
Connor was dull, but he wasn't as outright terrible as he's made out to be. There were more problems with the game, but the big one is as above - areas weren't fun to traverse, and there was very little to do outside of the main story. Compared to Black Flag, where I'm utterly drowning in additional content, AC3 just feels half finished.
I think the sparseness may explain why I disliked it too.
And the collectibles. But really, you can't compare collectibles in AC3 to 4. Sea shanties are collectables done fucking right.
Disabling saving/achievements when turning on the invincibility code is one thing. I'd rather you just disable the ach's, because who gives a flying fuck what I do in my single player game in the first place, but whatever.
Disabling saving/achievements when turning on the "talk like a stereotypical pirate"? The fuck is wrong with you? Yeah, better curb this overpowering advantage.

There was also the fact that seemingly every mission objective had you traipsing back and forth across the entire goddamn length of the map. Maps littered with countless impassible terrain features you wouldn't see until you right on top of them and forced to backtrack for some alternate route.

Anne Bonne wont call out her quartermaster stuff. Sometimes she does, sometimes she doesn't. It's kind of annoying. She does the animations but half the time says nothing.
I'm also having odd bugs with boarding where my dudes wont board and will just sort of...watch. Which is kind of amusing to be honest
Old Hand 1, sucks in air through his teeth: Weeeeerl, always tricky, that. See the way he moves about all quick like? Werl ye might hit him aye? And then he gets real downright surly with you he does. Nah best steer clear of him when he's in a killing mood I reckon.
Old hand 2: Aye and he don't need us anyway. Once I thought to take out the man behind im and quick as ye blink he took him out and the guy behind me at the same time.
Old hand1, nodding sagely: Oh aye and he don't like it when you take his kill neither! No you just sit here and watch lad, you are in for a treat I reckon.
Old hand 2: Oh look, he's done that last one in! Right over the gunwale!* That's our captain! We better cheer lads!
And then they all cheered.
Fortunately it's kind of rare.
The other really annoying bug is music playing twice. So, like, the boarding music, I'm hearing this double beat and it's clearly the song playing twice over itself. That is...quite disconcerting because one is just the tiniest fraction behind the other.
*I have no idea what a gunwale is.

Quit the game and reload, and it'll start working again, just like all the other bugs with sounds not playing. I'm not entirely sure of what all triggers this one. Going into the captain's cabin seems to, but there's other things that will bug it out as well.
The best glitch ive had in this game (im getting a lot of glitches on the xbox one) is I fast travelled to an island, I forget which, and everyone was walking on an angle, like all the npc's leaned maybe 45 degrees backwards from their feet. The fact that the whole island was doing it, and my crew and I werent, made it feel like it was simply the fashion on this island.

I've had the same problem for some time on the 360. There's a post about it on the ubi forums that mentions mucking about with the surround settings, though this too does not fix it. I'm pretty sure you're (we're) just going to be stuck with it until it's patched. If it's patched.

I really miss the blending in AC3. I really wish it was in AC4. I go stand next to people and he does nothing. Connor and Haytham were so good at it. That's one thing I don't understand. Why is that missing?
There.
See.
I can have complaints too!
I just did a tailing mission in which Edward actually blended competently with two groups in a row, even kneeling down to pretend to gamble with some pirates. I wonder if there's a bug that prevents him from doing this more often?

He only does it in that mission. It was a mission demoed in a trailer where he actually did even more blending, including talking to them briefly. He doesn't do this anymore. I wonder if something got cut or canned unexpectedly to get this out the door.
Wait.

Had this bug and got around it. Replay an earlier memory, I just redid that first island sequence, and when you get back the mission should be reset and beatable.

I just had the most amazing naval battle in a storm with two frigates, two man of wars, (a couple of brigs? I think? Maybe one brig? I kind of lost count), two hunter ships that spawned in the middle of the fight, two rogue waves and three tornadoes. Unless it was the same tornado three times which is likely.
It was just.
I mean.
If I'd known that was going to happen when I decided to attack that frigate I might of...nah who am I kidding. I woulda done it anyway.
Regardless, I sort of wanna show it but, like, it's got a post game spoiler in it.
The very last boarding of the very last ship was a man of war and it was at night, in the rain, with lightning and high seas and waves crashing everywhere and oh man.
And then after that i went and killed every guard in Kingstown. I wish I was kidding. I'm kind of nuts about searching for animations in these games since everytime you think you've seen all of them...whoops here's another one.

I'd actually prefer to board without my crew, as they keep distracting the guys from attacking me, and screwing up my counters.
If I incapacitate a ship, stop next to them and don't board, I can just swing over there and kill them all, right?
Then just go back and board them?
PS. Just unlocked diving bell missions. Fuck sharks, but at least you can see them. The eels are being a bigger pain for me. Why can't Edward wear his hidden blades for this? If his grandson can kill bears with them, he should be able to stab a shark in the nose.
It's like they combined PIRATES! with the ending of Mass Effect 3.

Yeah, I love how crazy the Assassin's Creed story gets.
The difference between it and the ME3 ending is that the series almost always been turned up to 11 on the crazy scale, and it's just slowly been cranking the knob up through 12, 13, 14, etc since, whereas ME3 decided 11 was a good number to end things at, when the rest of the franchise had been comfortably hovering at around 8.
Now I've updated my ordnance, naval battles have become really frantic. I remember AC3 being a bit, "Fire! Wait! Wait! Turn around! Fire again!"
Now, it's more like, "Fire chain shot! Swivel gun the weak spot! Approach! Heavy shot! Turn! Fire barrels which inevitably fail to do anything! Heavy shot again! Board!"
AC3 might have had some of those options, but it never made me want to use them all. The organic feel of the open world also makes the decisions more important - do I attack that convoy, or go for that lone ship which might sail into restricted waters? Can I afford to lower my infamy, or should I fix the Jackdaw?

We must have been playing different games, because only the character arcs have ever been different in the assassin creed games. The overall story of every single one is a quest for ancient civ mcguffin.
Maybe if your hobby before this had been watching the test pattern it might seem that crazy.
It's not much of a comparison really the ending to me3 was awful for so many reasons few of them realistically applying to black flag. Although it mollified the masses the extended cut was just more of the same problems imo.
In fact thinking about it more even the character arcs are pretty much identical, in the ancestor segments:
They all start out using assassins training/gear for selfish reasons pride, revenge and now wealth (and it usually conveniently involves killing templars) before accepting the creed and embarking on the grand Assassins vs Templar struggle
It's like they combined PIRATES! with the ending of Mass Effect 3.
lol.
I could sort of understand that comparison with AC3's modern ending, but ACIV's ending is fine and thematically appropriate with the rest of the game? The entire plot is all about Edward's development as a character and I totally dig it.
I have no idea why you're even playing like the 6th(?) installment of a series of which you already established that the writing is "the absolute worst".
I like the pause menu description for terminals hacked.
It's not really 'hacking'. It's testing!
Just keep telling yourself that, and everything will be fine.
Did some more snooping around the office, and found something talking about ctOS. So I guess the totally-expected twist that Watch_dogs and AssCreed share a universe is official. Guesses for how long until they properly merge? One, two games?

It feels pretty weird that it is the 6th installment of the series and they still haven't dropped the terrible, terrible scifi elements. Oh you're having fun pirating and following the story, why don't we take you out of it so you can get blackmailed by some office perv into hacking computers of all the ladies. It's like they're intentionally trying to kill any immersive moments you might be having.
I wish this was a kick-ass stand-alone Pirate game and not a (good) Assassin's Creed game with a pirate theme. The AC elements mostly just seem to get in the way of the good stuff.

See, you say terrible, I quite like it.
It's a clever framing device because it lets them set the games pretty much anywhere they want.
And if you take away the modern stuff, there's virtually no link between games, and no overarching story.
And if you don't want to do the modern stuff, you can blitz through it pretty fast.
The implication there is the games would for some reason need to be linked I think this game more then the others has gotten more people wondering just what kind of game they could pull off without the meta elements, and personally a fleshed out time period action/sim game would be pretty damn awesome.
and if you don't want to do it...you can just do it fast. Isn't much of a selling point, would probably make me wonder even more if it's really necessary.
To me unless you like frogger an inordinate amount the real world sections could of been handled with a few cut scenes. besides collecting cryptic illuminati-gibberish and frogger you have no say in how the real world sections play out and no investment in it...it's so...opposite to how the ancestor section plays that it can't help but be a speed bump in the flow of the game.
"You could hack other computers, but that would make you a dick," says the IT guy as I'm standing by my colleague's computer impatiently waiting for him to stop speaking
I liked the general period stories in the games, but I always felt that if you surgically cut out all the modern stuff and the framing around it, especially the lost civilization junk, they wouldn't be that terribly interesting. Altiar especially. Ezio was so much better, but it still felt a bit on the bland side on its own. And Conner... was just a bunch of stuff that happened. I still like the story they tell, but it's also a means to an end to see how it relates to the present day. And without that payoff, they wouldn't seem that fulfilling. At least to me that is.
I dunno, I suppose it's like taking a Reese peanut butter cup, but saying you don't like the chocolate. A valid complaint, but you also can't just rip it out of the cup and still have the same product.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
Hmm, they COULD link all the stories without the modern day part, it would just require some very literal, hand-holding exposition. Like a Star Wars intro scrawl. Just straight up tell you how Ezio is related to Altair, and that Ezio is about to get involved in his own quest for Ancient Civ McGuffins and that Templars and Assassins are still going at it.
