For real. I've actually been wondering if there's a good comprehensive guide to all the stuff in the game, including the initiates stuff and companion app. I unlocked my first initiates chest, and got attacked immediately afterward so I have no clue what I really unlocked because the pop up disappeared.
I believe it unlocks the full outfits in the customization menu.
The majority of the companion chests/mission unlocks are cash rewards, but a couple are exclusive weapons/armor and the hardest (one that will take the longest time to unlock due to leveling characters and action time) has Altair's outfit. Getting the armor and outfit require collecting artifacts in the rifts which you can't touch until you do certain missions in the app.

I Redboxed Rogue, but it's hard to play a 360 game after I've been playing PC/PS4 games constantly for the last... long time. Just looks so bad when you're used to something better. Never really noticed it until now.
Are you the magic man?

I finally beat Rogue. It's pretty much AC4 but more of it. Definitely a quality game. I'm not sure I want to 100% it though, as that's 20 or so hours of hunting collectibles, especially when I have a whole other AC game to get through.
The AC games really need to make the side content more elaborate. They make huge worlds but don't do much beyond litter those worlds with collectibles. I wish they'd take some inspiration from the Rockstar games and have analogues to Red Dead Redemption's Strangers side missions or GTA's Strangers and Freaks. I'd love to have a little mission like that in each town or settlement to give them some much-needed personality.
I kind of want to jump into Unity, but that sounds like a bad experience at the moment.
I mean... that's what Unity does. There's the Assassin missions where you're retrieving heads for Madame Tussaud and stopping Templar presses from printing libel, there's murder mysteries for you to solve, there's the Cafe hideout missions.
In many ways, Unity is the next step forward for the AC blueprint. Just... not so much technically.

I'm still amused by how fast you about faced on that.
When I get this game I know I'm going to be thinking the entire time "Is this when Captain Nemo snapped? No no it must have been this bit!"
(PSN: Morninglord) (Steam: Morninglord) (WiiU: Morninglord22) I like to record and toss up a lot of random gaming videos here.
I haven't gotten super-far in the story yet (got sucked into Dragon Age), but it really feels like Revolutionary Paris is the main character, and Arno was just conveniently added so you have a dude to run around in it. I love all the little details like peasants running off with looted art from cathedrals, random fights breaking out, and the fact that it's the political extremists rather than the beleagured guard who want to kill you on sight.
Want to find me on a gaming service? I'm SwashbucklerXX everywhere.
Anyone know what happened with Vidic's original voice actor?
It took me forever to figure out in the Audio recordings in AC4 that the male voice in question was supposed to be Vidic, even though the mannerisms, accent, and pitch were completely off.
Edit: Weird, Phil Proctor did Vidic in AC through AC3, but then wasn't tapped for AC4, and was tapped again for Rogue. Not sure if he shows up in Unity at all, but he wasn't credited for it.

ACIV features decades younger Vidic, that's why he sounds so different. That side story is basically about a side tech that he stole from to make the Animus better.
Anyone that has this on PS4 - does your system's fan go absolutely insane & kick into high gear when accessing the character customization menus or the database? Mine does this & it drives me nuts - leaving these menus and going back to actual game the fan immediately calms down. Just curious if anyone else is experiencing this. It only seems to happen with Unity & only when accessing menus.
To be honest, I'm only a couple of hours in but I am so far very much preferring the more personal, character driven story. I suspect this will not last but I'd love it if it did.

You will probably remain happy if that is what you are looking for.
The stakes of this game are grounded in mostly the real. This is a story of revenge, set on the backdrop of the french revolution. Their philosophy and ideologies are still massive, but what is actually happening is well grounded in the time and place, and I love the game for it.
The worse offense this game has, storyline-wise, is that they Forrest Gump you into some interesting moments of the revolution. Sometimes jarringly so. But that's kind of been a hallmark of the series, what with DaVinci building you flying machines and Blackbeard and whatnot.

Let's play Mario Kart or something...
Yeah, the entire premise of the series is that you get to be there for the big historical figures/events (DaVinci, the Borgias, Boston Tea Party, etc), and everyone is either an Assassin or a Templar. And anyone who ever died was probably killed by you, like a Kratos for historical figures.
If you're not down with that, this series really isn't the best fit for you.
It was a fun game to play and all, but after killing the third or so assassin, I just wanted to get the sequences over with. Story wise, it still bothers me. I get killing the lady who was using armed gangs to build poison gas factories, since that's arguably pretty evil. Adewale, though? Was that guy ever anything but a legit badass?
It's not like there's no precedence for assassins going bad, i.e., Altair's old mentor, that guy Abbas, that dude in the Revelations side mission, etc. A not insignificant portion of AC3, however, was spent making the player like Achilles and empathize with him. If you're going to make him a bad guy earlier in his life, you need to sell that harder. Honestly, until the very end of the game, I kept expecting to come across some stuff like they did in Liberation, where some memories were actually corrupted to make the Templars look better.
Nope. Unless I missed it.
Either way, great game. The story just made me uneasy.

That's the thing, though
Rogue ending spoilers:
Achilles wasn't totally made out to be the enemy. Both Assassin and Templar have now been painted in positive lights, and the other in negative. The recurring theme is that both sides think they're the good guys. The Templars think they can bring peace through domination, and they look like the evil Empire. But their ultimate goal is in fact peace and harmony. The Assassins want freedom, even if it means killing whoever is in their way and apparently destroying cities to do so. It was never made clear (at least, if it was, I missed it) if Achilles knew the artifacts would destroy Haiti and Lisbon. But hindsight shows that the Assassins are willing to destroy a whole lot of things to get their way.
Adewale had to be killed because he was a legit good man, true to his convictions. Shay even says as much. But he knew that Ade wouldn't stop until either he or Shay was dead. Shay just decided to take the matter in his own hands before Ade could take him out.
I took out my first fort in Black Flag tonight and watched the ocean map open up for the first time.
I thought the game was almost grossly huge before this happened. Now I'm just rolling around in whale carcasses and what are these caves and how many mortars can these damn forts take to the face
Black Flag is real big. I'm definitely going to have to take a lengthy break before I can even consider playing Rogue.

The problem I had with Black Flag was that it was absolutely massive for the ship gameplay and excruciatingly tiny for the on foot gameplay. Most areas were really small to run around, while the three main cities were also pretty small.
The ship gameplay was a fun addition, but I also play Assassins Creed for the cities and traversal of said cities, and after a couple of hours in each city there wasn't much left to see. A lot of the islands were pretty boring, flat affairs with a few interesting tree layouts to leap between with the interesting Mayan temples and such being the exception rather than the rule.
I'm still amused by how fast you about faced on that.

I started breaking about a third of the way through, but snapped when I got to Ropespierre.
I wish they had a challenge mode or something, just an arena where you can get in massive fights. To hell with context, just give me 40 soldiers to kill as fast and/or stylishly as possible.
I think they had something like that in Brotherhood, but I haven't found anything like it since then.

I recently finished Black Flag at about 85%. I had the same reaction upon clearing my first fort. Thankfully, you can fast travel all over the map once you've been somewhere.
I enjoyed the heck out of it, especially the ship sailing and combat. I was happy that such a big part of the game took place on the ship, as I've kind of grown tired of all the running and climbing and collecting. I got the "Take 30 ships" trophy really early in the game.
I actually played a bit of Black Flag over the last few days to see if I was just being unfair to it.
The ship stuff is a bit better than I remember it being. Attacking forts is pretty cool. But then I tried a story mission. It involved following/eavesdropping, and I immediately remembered why I didn't play it for 11 months. The line of sight requirement is ridiculous when, at the click of a button, you get super senses.

The follow/eavesdrop missions are easily the low point of Black Flag. Just baffled that so many of them made it into the game. And like 2 SHIP FOLLOW missions. Insane.

Probably just becomes a normal standalone product for $20 or so, with anyone that already bought the season pass getting it free. I would assume that some other arm of Ubi is working on it, so I wouldn't expect its development to be impacted in any way. Could be wrong.
I'm hearing contradictory things about Unity. Generally, do you guys see it as better or worse than AC3, or is it similar in quality but its strengths and weaknesses lie elsewhere?
I'm definitely going to get it sooner or later, since I enjoy these games most for the historical spaces they create, and I've missed the grandiose architecture throughout AC3 (haven't played Black Flag yet), but I'm wavering between getting it soon and waiting until it's considerably cheaper.

Worse. For all it's flaws, AC3 at least had a protagonist who wasn't a complete piece of shit, and a story that didn't take history and rub it all over it's taint.
