“Keep in mind this is just one of the projects I'm working on in my spare time, and I'm not a professional,” he said in an e-mail when I asked for a copy of his Trench Run Oculus Rift demo. “So it's probably not very good.”

Damn you Kuchera! I've been following this over on the Rift forums for some time, eagerly waiting release! Thanks for feature on it though! And that's some awesome work, Mr. Calhoun! I look forward to the (hopefully) inevitable release!

This is one of the things I'm looking the most forward to testing on the Rift. People seem to be genuinly enthralled by it, and I'm curious to see how well it works for me -- keeping in mind I cannot see stereoscopic 3D at all.

I AM SO READY FOR THIS.

Seriously, i think a lot of people would pay money for this in the state that is in right now.

PD: I do have to wonder about Disney or someone else making a legal fuzz about this. :S

I put this in full-screen & looked at it with my "Magic Eye" viewing technique.

Wow. I didn't totally get the buzz before about Occulus, but now I do. I imagine that sense of depth and motion without the blinding headache that accompanies extensive magic eye viewing, and I get it.

@Streever I never understood the reason for the L/R Oculus Rift video splits until your post. Thanks!

I'm not even that crazy about Star Wars, but I love everything about the Oculus Rift. This thing needs to be released right now!

X Rebirth was a terribly disappointing release, but one thing they did right is they future-proofed their game for VR. Everything except a tiny dialog/option menu is attached to real-wold geometry, The cockpit of your ship is fully rendered so you will be able to look around. Of all the games I own, that's the one that (once the hideous release issues are resolved) I am looking forward to on a Rift the most.

  • LoneGunmanLoneGunman Registered User regular
Man, I'd love this...especially if it could be expanded to encompass the full battle (stuff you didn't see in the movie scenes) as well as other battles in the series. Actually makes me want to get an Oculus now...

@Hailthefish Are you able to sneak away and get to a phone to call the police for help with the man who has the gun to your head and is forcing you to read articles and comments about the Oculus Rift?

An old school X-Wing game would be at the top of my wishlist of games for the Rift.

This is amazing. I've been a huge fan of Star Wars for most of my life but I am admittedly ready to move beyond the Holy Trilogy. That doesn't mean that I would ever say "No" to hopping into a Rebel Fighter or a TIE Variant. But my orgasm moment? Inside the cockpit of a BattleMech. OMFG! That would... yeap. I'd be completely sold on the Rift. I've been playing a lot of MechWarrior Online lately and the idea of playing a MWO... on a Rift? I'd completely lost to anywhere and anything. MWO... with a GamePad (I'd prefer an Xbox Controller because of familiarity) and the Rift? Glorious Gaming Revolution.

Yeah, I'm with you. Other people liking stuff is enough to make me hate it too. The Oculus Rift is lame. I was duct taping smart phones to my ski goggles before it was cool.

    @HAILTHEFISH

    Do you have a Rift?

I had the pleasure of borrowing one for a long weekend (just so you know I have no purchaser's guilt to assuage here). I played Half Life 2 with it, start-to-finish. Decade-old graphics, screen-door effect and all, it was still the best-looking game experience I've ever had. And yes, I've played all the Crysis, all the Far Cry, etc etc.

    How is this possible?

    1. Scale. Nothing, not even a 3D monitor (which has to distort perspective to give you a playable FoV) gives you the sense of real-life scale a Rift-style headset provides. People look person-sized. It's a kind of graphical fidelity that isn't even on the same axis as polygon counts, texture sizes and pixel densities. When you've caught yourself checking out Alyx Vance's ass, you'll understand.

    2. Specular effects. Regardless of how fancy a shader you put on a surface, unless you present a different specular reflection to each eye, it won't look right. Even something as simple as the material of Gordon's gloves (which look pretty drab and fugly normally) is transformed; suddenly you know what it would be like to touch them. Crouching to inspect dead head-crabs becomes a pretty visceral experience.

    3. Transparency. Being able to focus on the patina of dirt on a pane of glass, and then look through it instead, or focus on the reflection - again, no shader can substitute for that.

    4. Micro-movements. One of the most impressive aspects of the Rift was the way it picked up even the tiniest of head movements. In the same way racing games look a billion times better when the track-side cameras behave like there's a human operating them, having the in-game camera so precisely linked to head movement is priceless, and further accentuates the effect of 1. 2. and 3.

    5. Glare/flare. It sounds like such a little thing, until you stand in the interrogation room in HL2 and notice yourself tilting your head to keep the bare-bulb glare out of your eyes - by putting it behind your brows, just as you would in reality.

This is why I believe the Rift is - literally and figuratively - game-changing. At a time when traditional methods for improving graphical quality (resolution, polygon count, shader complexity, texture size) are yielding diminishing returns, it opens up brand new ways for graphics to look real. It pushes buttons in our heads that nothing else can reach.

And that's why stuff like this article gets published. Yes, games have had 3D cockpits before. But have you ever felt like you were actually tucked into one, acutely aware of the cramped scale of the metal tube you're flying, with just a few millimetres of scuffed perspex separating you from vaccuum? The very fact that such a humdrum, low-budget effort can still get people who try it excited is evidence in itself of how important a development this could turn out to be.

Instead of name calling and insult hurling, I'm going to get in line behind PEELING (who presented some great points) on the road to the high ground and just add a few things.

The Rift IS a game changer. Sure VR headsets have been around for over a decade... but they were awful. They took more away from the experience than they added to it. The Rift is the first and only device to have to specs and engineering to really deliver what every other VR headset has dreamed of delivering. This is apparent without even getting into the fanboy nerdgasmy reviews. Just look at the specs on paper. If you know anything about resolution and field of view, the Rift is a dream come true on paper.

As far as off the paper in actual use, it's an even bigger game changer. The Rift is going to spill out into so many more mediums than just video games. The porn industry is an obvious one, but besides that, imagine going to a Rift Theater, sitting down, strapping your rift on and watching a film that was shot entirely in 360 degrees. You could watch it 50 different time and each time could be unique and different. This is going to happen. Mark my words.

The Rift does get a ton of coverage, and it does get almost universal praise, and almost every review makes it out to be the best thing ever. And I realize it's easy to get fed up with all that but.... consider for a moment that perhaps the reason for all the hype is because it really is THAT good.

@Streever: "Magic eye"? I honestly would have never thought of that, and now the appeal is now much more obvious.

@IM_THE_DECOY: 360 degree movies? I would have never thought of that, either; and I actually got a little shiver at the realization.

WHY AM I NOT THINKING OF THESE THINGS?

I'm not a nice guy, I just play one in real life.

If you see somebody playing this, the Rift covering their eyes and ears, you're morally obliged to walk up behind them and say "Use the force." in your best Alec McGuiness impression.

@PEELING - "But have you ever felt like you were actually tucked into one, acutely aware of the cramped scale of the metal tube you're flying, with just a few millimetres of scuffed perspex separating you from vaccuum?"

Technically if you're in an x-wing it's not perspex, it's transparisteel.

This looks awesome. My stomach may or may not handle motion-y bits, but it still looks like pure, liquid awesome. Also,
