Minimum requirements to have beaten Spelunky rather than having had Spelunky beat you:
1. Olmec run
2. Olmec speedrun in under 8 minutes for Speedlunky achievement
3. No gold run
4. No item no damsel run
5. Hell run
6. No gold no item no damsel Hell run
7. Hell speedrun
8. Eggplant run
9. No gold no item no damsel eggplant run
10. Double eggplant run (must eggplant yama, then kill eggplant yama with additional eggplant)
Climbing gloves are great with the jetpack. They've probably saved me more than contributed to getting me killed.
There are times when you can get in sticky situations with them when you need to drop platforms quickly, but given a choice on whether to take or leave them, I usually take them.

I had an awesome run going the other day where I was in the mines and had a roulette shopkeeper. First thing I won was the gloves. I decided to keep coming back to him when I could to try and win the next item, which turned out to be a shotgun. At this point I also figured I'd do some ghost running, but I still kept coming back to bet on the wheel. I even got a jetpack off of him!
Too bad I screwed up in jumping over the ghost during what was supposed to be my final rounds through the level.
I miraculously dropped down and caught the ledge above those spikes. I'm not sure I even looked before falling. It was like God gave me a second chance. I got the jetpack and made it to the last jungle level before stupid BS killed me - Falling between tiki traps I think.
Day 15: I made it to Olmec for the second day in a row! I think doing the warm up run first is really helping out. I even made it through the city of gold and got the book of the dead! Very exciting. Unfortunately, I had no jetpack when fighting Olmec and he crushed me only a couple layers away from the bottom. Only a matter of time....
Robes on
"Wait" he says... do I look like a waiter?

Dangit Robes, you're not allowed to be so good with only two weeks of experience. I don't know how many of us in the Autumn Sale cohort (which includes SteevL, TychoCelchuuu, and myself) have that kind of consistency, but I know I'm certainly not one of them.
I actually did fairly well on my 2014-01-17 run though, barring the blatantly stupid death at the end. One small error can really spell doom in the Temple stratum.

It's crazy that I still haven't made it to Olmec despite having beaten him in the XBLA version. In fact, I can count on one hand the number of times I've made it to the temple. Maybe one day I'll improve.
I'm the opposite, I couldn't even get to the temple for the longest time on XBLA. Meanwhile I had beaten hell and unlocked every character on the Vita, and the only pages I have yet to unlock are Old Bitey and Vlad.
Managed to beat hell in today's daily.
Currently in 9th on the leaderboard with $938k
I skipped the Mothership which would have probably brought me close to a million if I got through it alive.
Lots of bombs available in today's seed but didn't spot a Jetpack. The cape, climbing gloves and spring boots helped though.
So if I piss off a shopkeeper but don't kill them, does my wanted level reset after a couple of levels? or will they always shoot me on sight from that point on?
Day 16: In the spider filled mines, I planted a bomb two tiles above an item shop to kill a giant spider. The shopkeeper took this as an act of terrorism. I ignored him and proceeded to make my way to the black market. Once there, I threw a sticky bomb at a shopkeeper to kill him. He went kamikaze and blew me up with him

Robbing/attacking only aggros the keepers for a few levels, killing one or allowing one to die means you have to deal with them for the rest of the game (not that big of a deal with practice)
In other news I had a pretty good run on tonight's daily, ~$250,000.

I had a very promising daily run tonight, and had I actually done some ghost running, I would have done even better.
I think you'll all agree I was fucking robbed at the start of 4-2, though. Holy shit, I wonder if that happened to anyone else in that run. I've seen video of it happening to other people in the past, I just didn't expect it to ever happen to me.

Oh man that is seriously harsh.
You definitely had enough health and bombs too that you'd have gotten through the City of Gold and beaten Olmec as well.
I feel pretty pumped. Made it to 4-1 on the daily, but spent a lot of cash buying stuff so my score was a bit lower. And maybe I should learn how to best use / abuse the kapala? Unfortunately the ankh was wasted on the first Ice world as a ufo crashed into me instead of somewhere else. And the very next level had the Moai!
Alas. Stuck with the cape and decided not to buy climbing gloves cause they always make me screw up. Thought I could duck under that whomp block at the start of 4-1. Turns out, nope. They seem a bit more vicious than they were in classic.
The key to getting consistently good runs is killing the shopkeepers. Once you can easily raid their shop and you understand the exit patterns and where you can shoot the shopkeepers from, this game gets a lot easier.
Yeah. I was considering robbing the black market to get a jetpack, but decided to opt for not introducing more potential ways to die. Play it safe and try to go as far as possible. I suppose if I had skipped the ankh and grabbed the jetpack I could have been facing Olmec down. Choices.

I almost always rob the shopkeeper if he has a jetpack. It's especially nice when it's in 1-2.
I was pretty surprised at how lucky I was in that temple level before I got telefragged yesterday. If you watch the video, you'll see that I kill Anubis while he is still hovering over the lava; I thought I had lost out on that scepter. Then, when I'm outrunning the ghost, I stopped paying attention and ran right into a tiki trap. Somehow I avoided its spikes. I guess it's only fair that I got insta-killed in the next level.

I think the sceptre will still be at the bottom of the lava pool if you drain it with a bomb, in the event one ever does drop in there.
I'm pretty sure I've had that happen once or twice and it was still there after I drained the pool.
The only thing I have seen that destroyed it was when it gets crushed by a falling block or those moving blocks.
There were a few moments you had with the tiki traps alright where I don't know how it didn't register as a hit.
I got nailed by a shopkeeper in 1-3. He bounced right out of that high wall around the exit straight away and finished me.
It took me ages to traverse the giant spider nest too as I approached it from the wrong side, and I had a ghost on my tail.

I just figured "damn this guy is good with tiki traps. He's got those timings down cold!"
It took me so long to get the 500,000 gold one until I found out about ghosting gems and cracking open the shopkeepers vaults.
After that, 2 or 3 ghosted vaults and grabbing most of the gems above Olmec should get you there, plus the 50k for beating him or 100k if you take it to Yama
Day 17: Fuck yeah! I have killed Olmec for the first time! I learned from my previous mistakes and used the jetpack to fly around and make a giant pit with sticky bombs. He sunk into that lava and then I gleefully pillaged his room of all its gems and gold before going to the exit. Got just under 500k this run not bad. Hopefully I can get to hell in future runs.
No entertaining surprise deaths here. This one will probably be a bit boring to watch. There were some good ghosting opportunities here, and I took them...but I also took my sweet time with it.
I think the leaderboards say 1-1 / $0 when the player in question is in the process of doing (or perhaps only recently completed before the central database has updated) their own Daily Run.

Don't get me wrong when I say this. Because Spelunky is a good game. But does anyone else hate the music? Specifically the opening intro tutorial music?
The chiptune stuff are the only ones I don't really like. Everything else reminds me of old Genesis game music, in a good way.

I hated the Spelunky music at first because the tones slightly resemble music from Sega Genesis games, which always used to grate on me. And also because I thought the music in the original Spelunky game was pretty good.
Wow, lots of potential in the 2014-01-19 Daily Challenge and I missed the opportunities. Looks like I'm close to the bottom of the PA Spelunky ladder on this one.

They are probably bad for speed running though.

Anyway, here's my 1-16 run, ended by a shopkeeper:
Things ended pretty quickly in the black market after I dropped my shotgun.
I had a really nice score going too after ghosting gems in 1-2 and 1-3.
Oh well, until tomorrow.
Well, that death was a surprise.
edit: hahahah just watched your run @SteevL. Great ending.

Skip to around 34:25 if you want to see the end.

Holy shit that is unfair. Maybe even the most unfair thing I've ever seen in Spelunky.

It went to hell when I tried to get the Ankh.
Wait.. why does it it say $0 for my run?
Edit - Not sure why it glitched on your screen, but thankfully my 400k run is still up there. Not great, but by no means bad.
Yeah, I've found that to be the case.
That being said, it has really grown on me and I often hum along with some of the songs from the mines.
Went in with 17 health, left with 7
I do not think I have ever been so nervous in my life
