I don't think I shared this when I learned about it a week or two ago, and most of you probably already know it, but there has to be someone else who doesn't:
I used to think that glasses were completely redundant because the Udjet Eye did the same thing, which allows you to see all the hidden gems in the rocks. Turns out it also allows you to see further in the dark levels without a torch.
This morning I had a pretty good run going. Cleared out the black market, got the Ankh, etc. Next level was a dark level. I got to a point where I stepped near a tiki trap, but to where I thought I was far away enough to not get spiked. I was wrong and lost my ankh. Then I proceed to go back there and do the exact same thing. Alas.
I didn't know that about the glasses.
It was also mentioned a few posts back that the aggro level on the shopkeepers can be lost if you don't kill them for a few levels. I didn't know that either.
The game is sure full of secrets.
I had a great run going, got to the city of gold with about 50 bombs and 10ish life. I didn't see one of the golden crush traps sitting below me and I got crushed before I had thrown more than 5 bombs, so sad.
However, I had my favourite moment ever on that run. There is a part in the mines (I want to say 3-4) where the exit is beside a multilevel wooden area with a movable block on top of it. I had triggered the shopkeepers earlier in the run, and when I came to the multilevel part, I was able to push a block down to trap the shopkeeper guarding the exit with the block. I then proceeded to slowly push him against the wall, and the crunch sound he made was very satisfying. Muahahaha.

I decided to hop on the PSN sale for this, my id there is Toids42 if anyone wants to add me for more daily challenge comparisons. (This is the first version of the game I've played as well, just for the record.) Looking forward to it!
I had a pretty spectacular 2014-01-20 Daily Challenge, my highest scoring yet. (It's too bad Daily Challenge performance doesn't carry to the standard score leaderboard.) I probably could have been greedier to score higher, but I'm satisfied with what I got.
Well, I've got every trophy for Spelunky and I think I'm done with this for a while. My blood pressure could stand to level out.
I finally got a good seed with a jetpack shopkeeper on 1-2 and ghosted three separate vaults while clearing every level completely out of its goodies. Got to $550,000 on 3-3 with the final ghosted vault. Then I just said "fuck it" and tried to go for the mothership and bit it big time by getting crushed by an elevator like a chump.
I've beaten Olmec 6 times and Yama twice. Time to play something a little less stressful like, oh, Dark Souls.
$177000, highest score in any mode, and it was on the daily. I don't feel that bad dying in Temple 1. Dark temple level... geez. And yeah, still not quite at the point of killing and robbing.

So I learned something new today:
There's nothing remarkable about this picture, but I took the screenshot because I had just dropped an Idol on top of the vault when it disappeared and the shopkeeper bought it off of me. I didn't think you could do that with vaults! Even more amusing was the fact that the shopkeepers were hostile to me at this point...although they had not yet been aggroed in this level.
A shame I died at the end of 4-1. Anubis and a shopkeeper were waiting for me, and I wasn't expecting that.

1-21 daily challenge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtyuFxafcGE
In which our hero makes a dumb mistake at the end, is revived by the ankh, and then amusingly thinks he can go back and not make the same mistake again.
If you're talking about the idol, I'm not 100% sure. I didn't expect it to sell when I dropped it there. I dropped it because there was a box I needed to whip nearby.

I missed the Udjat Eye in today's (2014-01-21) Daily Challenge, so it's fairly unremarkable. Still, I did have a stupid death, so that's something, I guess?
Anyhoo, I beat Olmec twice today, one run right after another. Once I ran out of bombs and had to sort of rub up against Olmec while in the pit I had bombed out to get him to trigger his stomping animation, since there was no space to get under him to do it the regular way.
The other time I had several more bombs and just blew a big hole.
I just did a Casanova run and died in an inch high pool of bombed out lava remainder.

The first and only time I beat Olmec, I don't think I used bombs at all. It was definitely a slow battle since I was still learning how to fight him. I think I'd only made it to him once before.

So last night (on 360, so not in a daily), I made it to Hell for the first time and made it through to Yama! (I did this even though I somehow forgot, both in 5-1 and in 5-3, that there would be angry shopkeepers waiting for me at the end. I'm just carefully moving toward the exit, avoiding traps, and then OH GOD SHOTGUN PELLETS RUN RUN JETPACK GET AWAY.)
I got both of Yama's hands destroyed, but was unable to kill him before he brought the roof down on my head.
Also, something else I saw for the first time in that run: I sacrificed a bunch of Yetis to Kali after getting the Kapala, and she gave me something like 10 hit points as a reward.
Day 19:
After getting a jetpack, in the ice caverns I sat on top of one of those floating platforms that fall down after you stand on them, and then proceeded to fly underneath it o.o No idea what I was thinking, but the platform landed on my head and blew up the jetpack and me, using my ankh. After losing the jetpack, I then proceeded to play as if I still had it, causing me to lose a few more hearts. What ended up killing me was stomping on a UFO ship when we were both right near the ground. The ufo exploded and took me with it. Lots of explosions today. Those bastards are tricky to deal with in narrow spaces.

Something that might help the next time you get to Yama: if you stay on the far right of the screen, you're safe from things falling on you. So if you've got a shotgun and some sticky bombs, you can pretty much kill Yama worry-free. Shoot his hands, and when his head starts floating over to you, toss the bombs from the safety of that overhang. If you go even one tile above the bottom of that overhang though, his head will slam into the ceiling and crap will fall on you, so don't do it until after he's officially dead and gone.
Finally made a flawless run down to the temple carrying the key to finish the shortcut. Immediately encountered Anubis just outside the door in a dark level and died, but I ain't even mad
(I realize shortcuts are for sissies but it's a handy way to finally get some consistent experience on handling temple enemies)
Day 20: I've been so caught up in league of legends placement matches i forgot how I died today. I do remember throwing a rock in the mines to kill a snake, and having the rock bounce into a shop keeper and pissing him off I survived the encounter but the fact he got so upset over a rock was silly. I didn't even make it to the black market. Oh I remember. I died to a piranha because I tried to stomp him like a goomba with my spike shoes. Apparently they are immune to that.
2014-01-22 Daily Challenge report: It was a fairly good run at the start, but I got into a tricky situation in the jungle and died shortly before I could unearth the Black Market.
People who makes sacrifices to Kali... Indiana Jones would be so ashamed of you. Did Short Round Teach you nothing?
They, like you, are trapped in this terrible maze. I like to believe that after each death, you get a few moments of peace that screaming for help in the mines doesn't afford you. By sacrificing them to Kali, I am doing them a favour.

Nothing remarkable about this run, I'm afraid. Didn't even make it out of the mines.

Having some terrible luck with the shopkeepers the last few dailies.

Why oh why did I try and do what I did in today's daily. I should have just walked away and used another bomb

You clearly should have more of us as friends then, because I'm not nearly in the upper echelon of Dailies when I see my friend leaderboards.

I died trying to get past a mine in the ice caves by picking it up. Except instead I ran past it and crouched.

A run fraught with stupid mistakes. It was a miracle I survived as long as I did, and typical that I missed when trying to jump on a wasp.
