Really the only reason you would use the ball and chain is if you're desperate to bring something into the Moai head, like an eggplant run.

Damnit! I made it to Olmec tonight, and this was my first time there in the Steam version. I took my time and grabbed all the stuff in crates and chests above him, then went down and bombed my way to the bottom. Finally, my trap was ready and I lured him over.
Unfortunately, I misjudged how far he would pound through the blocks above and he crushed me.

Only a matter of time now before you beat him. You've gotten to the City of Gold and to the temple a good few times now in the last week or so.

Yeah, we'll see. I had the beginnings of a pretty good run this morning, but I decided to do some ghost running in a jungle level because a mining pick dropped out of a crate and I already had a jetpack and shotgun. I mined out most of the level pretty successfully...but I got greedy and went for the vault too. The shopkeeper inside killed me, but I had an ankh! So of course I decided to go back to kill the shopkeeper.
That's when I noticed that right before I died, my unconscious body had collected all the diamonds. I quickly made the decision to leave the shopkeeper alone and made a course correction. Unfortunately, I was using my jetpack and ran out of fuel, sending me right into a tiki trap.
I'm currently waiting on some replacement rubber contact pads for my 360 controller. The D-pad has really lost its sensitivity over the last 7 years. I did a temporary fix where I put some hole-punched aluminum foil over the contacts, but I think it's become loose because the sensitivity really fluctuates between really good and not so great. Maybe it'd work better if I used superglue instead of double-sided tape, but I think replacing the contacts altogether is a better strategy. Once that is done, maybe I will play a little better.
The daily challenge I throw a bomb at a tiki trap, it sticks to the dead shop keeper, the Tiki Trap isn't having that and launches the dead shop keeper at me and I blow up instead of the tiki trap.
Is there some trick to finding the Key in some cases? Sometimes I'll find the chest and I just don't see a key anywhere in the level no matter where I look.

It should always be somewhere in the level...sometimes it gets hidden in a distant corner of a level that is not easily reachable.
And if you are grabbing the idol in the mines, there's a chance the boulder is destroying the key. It's generally a bad idea to grab the idol unless you have already gotten everything in the level and Kali's altar isn't in the way/a shop isn't in the path of the boulder.
My 01/26 daily was dreadful. Shopkeeper from the vault in the mines finished me.
On another note, there's a new patch coming soon that is updating the HUD.
It's shown off in this video here. Jump to the 2 minute mark to see the changes.

The only times I grab a boulder idol:
1) Everything else in the level is clear and I know that it's impossible for the boulder to destroy a shop/vault. Also it is very convenient and easy to get without accidentally dying.
2) The idol spawns right next to a shop I can sell it to before the boulder shows up, eliminating the risk of the shop getting destroyed, or alternately right next to the exit.
I really like that HUD update. There have been multiple instances where I'm unable to see an item in the top left because my GIANT inventory icons are blocking it, so I have to look up/cancel rinse repeat to try and see it through the gaps.

Supposed to be possible to Ghost Olmec now if you've got the ghost permanently after you.
It's what I've always wanted! I especially love the level timer.
Here's my 1-27 daily challenge. Made it to the Black Market and died there because it was a goddamn dark level and I didn't see the snail bubble until it was too late. I had a lot of money by that point too thanks to some ghosting.
Dangit. My 2014-01-27 run was disappointing for two reasons: first, there was potential for a really, really high score today and I missed out on a ton of opportunities, and second, for the second time in three days, I mess up on the Olmec fight on the Daily Challenge. Argh...

That HUD update is long overdue. It can be very frustrating to miss something because of the obtrusive HUD icon in the top right, like a spider on a dark level (already hard enough to see).
Sounds like some great changes. Will those be coming to the PS3/Vita versions as well?
Day 25: Olmec died whilst the book of the dead was in my inventory! Unfortunately, I assumed that the entrance to hell was in the middle of the map right above the lava instead of to the far right. Or is the entrance random? Anyway, I didn't make it into hell because I was impatient and didn't check. Progress~
"Wait" he says... do I look like a waiter?

It's random, and the book of the dead actually tells you where the entrance is. It gets more animated when you're standing above the entrance, sort of like how the Udjet Eye clicks when you're neat the Black Market.

Bahhhh. I saw it animating too! I looked up and saw it, and just assumed it meant that this was the level that it was used in. Oh well.
The 27th was my favorite. I hardly ever pick up mines so I haven't ever seen anybody die from getting frozen with one, and just having to wait for the inevitable deathsplosion.
I hear it turns him into a terrible keyface monster. Once you defeat him all your gold turns into keys, which immediately fall from the ceiling of his chamber and crush you.
Day 26: My good old friend Mr teleporter showed up in todays daily challenged. I remember last time he dropped me into a spike trip. I picked it up again and started using it a bit more intelligently than last time. When doing a teleport jump horizontally, i actually ended up diagonaly upwards and to the right, into a solid wall piece of course. Strange, I know for sure if it just let me teleported horizontally i would have been safe.
A teleporter is waaaay too risky for any of my daily runs.

I had my best run ever tonight! And I stayed the hell away from that teleporter. I'm in the process of uploading my video of it right now, but I am sad to say the audio got that fucked up crackling in it again. I'm not really sure what causes that, but I'm not replacing it with other music this time because that seemed to cause youtube to take an extra 8 hours to process my last video with all the content matching.
I made it to the city of gold for the second time and promptly died.
I think I figured out what is causing the annoying sound. It seems that OBS was trying to pick up the sound from a mic that is not connected, so I'm getting that static instead. I'll have to mute it from now on. It's not like I've done vocal commentary in a month anyway.
I got careless in the 2014-01-28 Daily Challenge; I can definitely see some really good scores coming out of today's seed. I'm also noticing that my baseline performance is getting a lot better and I'm getting to Olmec a lot more frequently - but I'm also finding that I'm only getting the Hedjet about as often.
I'm not really sure what happened today. I was in the black market, picked up a shotgun, fired and instead of simply being hit, the shopkeeper shot back.

Was there something in front of him that could be hit, like a mystery box or a damsel? If you hit one of those, they'll fire immediately.

Otherwise, the risk is just not worth the $5000.

Some of those deaths are pretty awesome
The 19th was painful to watch.
The shopkeeper seems to get you the most. I know that feeling.
But yeah, I do get shot a lot.
