I apparently played 38 games released this year, not counting HD remakes/ports of older games

That seems like a little less than last year, but that fits, because overall I don't think this year was quite as good as last year

the room is a neat puzzle game where you work to open a byzantine puzzlebox that contains diary entries and research notes from a dead relative, and IIRC the story it hints at is vaguely lovecraftian?

I have recently rediscovered Vice City's radio stations. Wave 103 is still fantastic.

In terms of GOTY, I still have many games to play/beat before I make my decision. The bolded ones are the ones I'm going to focus on.

The ones to start (waiting on a new TV to play the PS3 ones, most on this list have been recent acquisitions):
    GTAV
    Tales of Xillia
    Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
    Metro: Last Light
    Shadowrun Returns
    Papers, Please
    Payday 2
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix (haven't played the first KH at all ever)
    LEGO Marvel Super Heroes
The Walking Dead: Season 2 (though that will probably fall into 2014 mostly)

The ones to finish (some of these I've gotten enough out of to probably say whether they will end up on my list or not):
Fire Emblem: Awakening (which I started this week)
    The Last of Us
    Ni No Kuni
    DmC
    Dead Space 3
    Soul Sacrifice
    Dragon's Crown
    Thomas Was Alone
    State of Decay
    ACIV
    Batman: Arkham Origins
    Gunpoint

    On the list so far?:
    Saints Row IV
    Battlefield 4 (?)
    Bioshock Infinite
    Gone Home
    XCOM: Enemy Within
    Tomb Raider
    Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
    Call of Juarez: Gunslinger
    The Stanley Parable
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (came out on PC this year)
The Wolf Among Us (same deal as The Walking Dead: S2)

After watching Prepare to Cry, I think after Demon's Souls my next game might be Dark Souls: Artorias of the Abyss

I never got to play the DLC! And it seems like it had awesome story stuff!

I just thought it was like, meaningless boss enemies tacked on but it apparently is pretty well integrated into the fabric of the game.

Depending on whether P4G counts, I think I'd end up having quite a few Vita games on my list between that, Tearaway, Soul Sacrifice, and Dragon's Crown.

Ironically, I think the game I played the most this year by far, Warframe, would be pretty low on the list but I'd feel remiss leaving it off entirely. It still has a lot of problems and lacks a lot of polish, but I keep going back to it and have fun just being a space ninja and shooting through hundreds of dudes, along with the skinner box satisfaction of leveling up weapons and characters, and then building new weapons and characters to level up more weapons and characters.

I would have probably snagged up a used Vita by now if it wasn't for dumb proprietary memory costs tacked on top.
