The vast majority of runes are pretty terrible. I can see why they'd want to revamp them - it does nobody any good to have a lot of worthless drops.

They need to redo them because 99% of them have no been touched since BWE1. Broken effects and all.
Its such a huge part of customization that has been ignored for a VERY long time (along with the 2H weapon sigils issue that was stated to be happening before BWE2... then instead the global sigil ICDs came)

I think I'm taking February off from GW2 to return in march. So ill run friday- and Come back in march and do a blood lottery mid march.
@yougottawanna - You have the valuable cheryl resouce to cover some- do you want to run mondays and her run fridays. Figure wednesday out or whatever?
If you feel the need to cancel a day thats cool also.
Chief Wiggum: "Ladies, please. All our founding fathers, astronauts, and World Series heroes have been either drunk or on cocaine."
Or the opposite. Being able to go 3/6 while you work your way up to 6/6 means you get partial benefits early. And then you also always do have the option of mixing and matching.
Except Anet seems keen on reducing mixing and matching by pushing the best benefits to the 4,5,6 level of the sets.
As for partial benefits, I mean, most runes you can buy cheap. And if it is a matter of slow acquisition, probably better to let them stack in your bank and use a cheaper 6/6 set in the meantime, especially if the benefits are pushed towards the more complete set. Again, so why have 6 anymore, just make 1 super upgrade if they're moving in this direction.
I agree, the runes need an overhaul. IMO, there are way too many sets, with too many that are just barely different from each other.
You know what would be really cool tho, add a lot of diversity, simplify the number of runes and have a cool mix-match gearing game? Have it so runes interact with different types of runes, like different poker hands. Sure, you could go with the straight (or would it be flush?) of 6/6 of all the same type. Or particular combos have base effect per rune, plus the additional effects as you make interesting combos. One of each of the gods runes gets a special set of bonuses. Or one of each city/profession/etc. Stuff like that. or 3/2/1 "full house" bonus (obviously not an actual full house) depending on which runes you used.
But as it is, like I said, if you push the bonuses to the 5/6, 6/6 stage, why bother with the sets at all?

Duuuuuude you're gonna miss Edge of the Mists. Or at least the exciting Scarlet-related part of it.
I can do February Fridays and Mondays but I may not be able to do Wednesdays... IIRC Cheryl can't do Mondays but can do Wednesdays and Fridays. We'll figure it out.

I think the idea is "if the 4/5/6 bonuses are meh, who's going to go 6/6 at all?" Which is kinda what we currently have. Yeah, there are certainly slightly higher bonuses at the 4/5/6 range, but they don't make up for the sheer versatility of rune mixing right now. I've been researching builds a lot lately, and very few builds recommend a 6/6 rune setup. Most are 4/2, or 2/2/2 depending on the need. The almost singular exception being Traveler's.

YOU'RE GOING TO MISS MY BIRTHDAY
Mojo will become the emotionally distant father figure we can never please.
About runes, I hope they accomplish their goals by buffing the 6/6 stuff and not nerfing the lower stuff too much. Also, there are a lot of rune sets with good bonuses at 6/6 now - Centaur, Melandru, and Soldier are three examples, and obviously Traveler.

I think its good 6/6 is not recommended. It makes for variety of a sort. However, Anet wants to push people to 6/6 - and if that's the goal, why bother with multiple runes.
I think they are taking away with this idea, rather than adding diversity. The rune sets are already kinda a bad idea. Like I said, I think it'd be a much cooler system is instead of going for plain 6/6 of the same type, mixing different types gave interesting bonuses. But Anet will not really unleash real creativity since they are set in keeping the game as super simple as possible.
I need to figure out a look for my plant woman. I have relatively normal-looking (for GW2) metallic grey armor on her now. I like it because it looks like a function-over-form thing, like she's geared up for fighting rather than looks. But I should add something, I just don't know what yet.
I just want to be able to wear the city clothes in combat.
My Engineer loves her bunny ears, but rarely wears them.
And I'd buy a quiggan backpack right now if I could wear it all the time.

I'll be right back, I have some gems to spend.
I'd check the TP first, a lot of unwanted backpacks from black lion chests are on there, you might be able to nab the one you want without spending and gems at all.

D'oh, I'd already rushed off - I'll remember that for other charaters, though. I've got a 11 Ranger I think I'm going to take all the wy to 80, so I'll need at least one more.
My backpack is so cute ! Only problem is it goes away when the flamethrower comes out, but that's a minor annoyance.
I can now continue my 100% map completion, safe knowing a little Queegan will be staring at me, cheering me on.

I bought my Sylvari Ranger a Charr backpack, for the modest fee of 2 gold. It's amazing.

I just spent the entire day herding cats in an attempt to launch three websites. I'm ready to kill some dudes! Hell - I'll attack keep doors from the inside - just let me bang my head against something!
Hey - thanks to the WvW'ers, good job sending Mojo off in style. Don't worry, WvW is still gonna happen. I'll be doing Mondays, Cheryl will do Wednesdays, and we'll split Fridays between us on a schedule TBD. And Mojo'll be back in March.
Next Monday will be Monday WvW as usual and I'll have new MEAN stuff up tomorrow or Sunday. Tuesday is the Edge of the Mists release. I assume everyone in the guild wants to see what the deal is with that, so we may have like a half-WvW night or something. It's not clear exactly what the PvE portion of the update is going to look like. But this is a good opportunity to get new people into WvW. If you've never done it before, consider showing up this coming Monday or Tuesday or both. Don't worry if you've never done it before, we'll get you sorted. And don't worry if you think you're not good enough. We're all terrible at this game, you'll be in good company.

Tuesday WvW will be down for 2 hours after patch.... so.... ya....
Launching in style. Also the acount bound wvw XP was removed from the patch as its 'not ready'. A month off was not enough. ;D
Chief Wiggum: "Ladies, please. All our founding fathers, astronauts, and World Series heroes have been either drunk or on cocaine."
Welp. Nevermind, I guess. Though there may be a PvE version of EoTM I think. Also,
Attention NICE!
As I'm sure you all know, February is WvW awareness month. Every day, literally hundreds of TC and SoS players die in the Mist War - which is not nearly enough. Nor is it enough to sit back and say "someone else will kill them." We have a personal responsibility to contribute our time and talents - as Gandhi said, "we must be the change we wish to see in World vs. World."
So this month, to raise awareness, I'll be wearing a red ribbon in the shape of FABL Garrison, and I hope you will too. I'll also be hosting...
Yougottawanna's Off-Brand Blood-like Substance Lottery: Wuv Free or Try Hard
Friday, February 7th beginning 7:30 EST (4:30 Pacific)
Blood Lottery works like this: every time you kill someone in WvW, there's a chance an item called "Badge of Honor" will drop. Whoever gets the most badges during the time period wins their choice of three prizes. Whoever wins second and third gets second and third choice. This is a me-funded event, so officers are eligible. The prizes are:
25 gold
10 black lion chest keys
The mystery box. What's in it? Who knows. It could be THOUSAND GOLD (though it probably won't be). It could be an abstract concept, like "kindness." It could be Marcellus Wallace's soul. You won't know until you open it.
So show up! Even if you're never WvW'ed before. All badges raised by the blood lottery will go towards funding research to figure out how to get TC to come out of their stupid towers.

Considering this is an off-brand blood lottery, are you going to be handing out off-brand sparkles(Which I have aptly named Sporkles)?

They are also reworking the leveling expierence.
Why add new permanent content? You can just rework the old content and annual festivals until no one plays anymore.

Monday WvW starts at 8 eastern/5 pacific. Everyone is welcome! Wanna sharpen your chops for blood lottery? Now's your chance. Remember, February is WvW awareness month. Also,
I hope you like text. I have a bunch of things for us to do, one busywork, two class-specific, and two general.
Busywork:
I want to get a better idea of our class composition. On the MEAN signup sheet (linked in my sig) I've changed the "WvW main" column to read "MEAN main." In it you should put the class you most want to play in MEAN. For instance, Yougottawanna is my main, but my warrior (Yououghtawanna) is my MEAN main. If the first class you have listed is the one you wanna play, don't change anything, and if you have multiple classes at 80 with no preference put the one with the best gear. (Also, your MEAN main shouldn't be a thief, ranger, or mesmer)
Class-specific (Guardian):
I mentioned last Wednesday I think it was that I want to split our Guardians up between Greatsword/Staff and Hammer/Staff. If you have a MEAN Guardian, try to get all three weapons. Before we head out we'll split our Guardians up between the two. I also want our Guardians to wear boon duration runes. Here's a list of ones to select from:
2 Superior Runes of the Water give 15% boon duration (available on TP)
2 Major Runes of the Water give 10% boon duration (available on TP)
2 Superior Runes of the Traveler give 15% boon duration (available on TP but expensive)
4 Superior Runes of the Traveler give a total of 25% boon duration (ditto)
2 Superior Runes of the Monk give 15% boon duration (purchasable with AC dungeon tokens)
Mix and match the above - you should get 40% boon duration from runes and 20% from traits for a total of 60%. Many apologies if you already spent money on Soldier runes - however, I think we have enough condition removal and I'd rather have boon duration on all MEAN guardians.
Also, I was considering losing altruistic healing from the MEAN build to add the AoE blind on Virtue of Justice. I have since scuttled that plan. Altruistic Healing is more valuable IMO. If you hit five teammates with empower an AH guardian will get an extra 4000+ healing, too much to pass up for just one more blind.
Class-specific (Necromancer):
I haven't given much direction to our necros, but here's a reader's digest version of how to integrate well with what we're doing. First, necros should consider themselves backline when using staff and frontline when using death shroud or dagger/warhorn. When using plague you're frontline but you have license to stray from the melee stack. You'll have a ton of health and you'll be constantly blinding and poisoning people - if possible, keep pressure on the bad guys and don't let them restack in peace. Your poison will also disrupt their healing.
About wells: you have a trait that'll give protection to allies when you drop a well - however, it only works if you drop the well on top of us, not if you drop it in front of us and then we run into it. So if possible try to drop wells on the melee stack as we're bombing. Also, most wells are light or dark fields so try not to drop them when we're restacking to blast water. If we drop a big water field when we bomb however, feel free to drop wells too. There'll be lots of combo fields down anyway, and blasting dark is area blindness which we like.
Putrid mark is a blast finisher but it has to be triggered by an enemy. So it's good to drop on a bomb.
In the past I've told necros not to fear people out of bombs. For the moment I'm backtracking on that; I think the danger of necros fearing too many people out of the bomb is pretty low. Fear when you think is best. Also, feel free to drop well of corruption even though it turns stability into fear. It'll disrupt the enemy offense.
General (calling out skills):
I want us to focus on calling out skills this week. If you don't have a mic I encourage you to get one. You don't have to be super chatty but there are a few things you should call out. Communication will make us fight better but it'll also make us evaluate our fights better.
For guardians: Say "chains" when you use chain pull. It'll let us know that we may want to bomb a couple seconds longer in some cases. Say "empowering" when you empower - it'll let us know we may want to stand still for a second or two. Say "book one" or "book two" when you get your book out. If you're doing blink squad, say "blinking" when you teleport in.
For warriors: When you use hammer AoE CC (hammer #3 or earthshaker), say "hammer" or "hammer stun" or "earthshaker." When you use a banner, say "bannering" or "banner one" if we have a warbanner order (hopefully we will). Everyone: the closer you die to the stack the easier it is for us to banner you.
For Elementalists: Call out "static" when you use static (I may try a static order, in which case it'll be "static one" "static two" etc...). "Big water one" or "small water one" (or two) when you drop those skills. If you tornado say "tornado."
Necromancers: "Plague" when you plague. That's actually the only thing I can think of ATM for necros.
All classes: Generally, AoE CC should be saved for bombs and called out. This applies to the immobilizes of hammer guardians, hammer warriors, and earth-attunement eles. Engis should call out supply drop if they use it (it's a great bombing skill). Staff guardians and earth-attunement eles should call out lines. If you go down, the preferred phrase is "need banner." Say it right away - banner has a long cast time and we want to get you up before you die obviously.
General (melee ball):
I keep harping on this I know. But keeping the melee stack together is vital to both offense and defense. Some people call it the melee "ball" and I think that's a good term. We're gonna try an experiment: warriors and guardians will not target enemies. Instead, they'll either target the commander or nobody. There are no warrior or guardian skills that require the enemy to be targeted in our builds (the one exception is judge's intervention for the blinking guardian). Everything is close-range aoe damage. I want us to get into the mentality of dropping damage on areas rather than on individual enemies.
Does this seem weird? It will at first. But weird tactics are great if they work. Also, it's more common that you think. If you watch some of the videos I've posted of frontline fighters in Second Law or Redguard they often either have the commander targeted or no one targeted. What's more, targets can backfire on you and make you savage leap/leap of faith the wrong way, which is always a drag. What's more, the game doesn't have a "clear target" button - but if the commander's the called target, the "take target" button becomes the next best thing. If you have an ally targeted, movement skills (savage leap and the like) will behave as if you had no one targeted.
Medidate on these concepts:
Our positioning is important
Our timing is important (that is, stability at the right time, saving bombing skills for the bomb, etc...)
Our composure is important (staying calm even when things get chaotic)
Our skill callouts are important (they provide feedback on how well we're playing)
Our class/build composition is important
Our collective quickness/alertness is important (it makes us harder to AoE or concentrate damage on)
The health bar of one enemy is not important. It'll take care of itself. I promise you that if you drop a rolling ball of murderers on the enemy's head they will melt.
Guys make sure you don't use your liquid WvW exp before Tuesday the 4th. Anet is increasing drop chance for rare items from the WvW rank reward chests. So save your liquid EXP till post patch to maximize your chance at better loot.
I wish they'd make it so the wuv chests always drop a set number of badges, instead of a chance to get 10. Like, current probability * 10 should be the badges that always drop. So, if its a 50% chance (0.5) then 5 badges always drop from a chest.

you mean dont open your chests..... so that you get the increased drop rate...... right?
I think the power supply on my comp crapped out on me. I guess it gave me a good 6 years! So while I hope that's the only issue, I am not sure I'll be around tonight for wvw.

I've had a few thoughts about my well necro in WvW. Maybe they'll help you, maybe not.
1. Drop Well of Blood (the healing well) on frontline right before hitting the enemy. This gives some incidental healing as well as protection to our team. Yay team!
2. Wells using ground targeting is so clutch, it should be required. Dropping a blind well on the enemy nukers is pretty awesome. In that regard, necro should always attempt to stay very close to the frontline, to allow for dropping the well directly into the enemy bomb. Having chill on blind is also nearly required, since not only does it mess up anyone hit, but it also provides protection to your other conditions.
3. There isn't enough time to drop all my goddamn wells. :P Coordination between necros might be a good thing, if we get enough. If, for example, we had 3 necros, one can drop Blood on our frontline, one drop Corruption on their frontline, and one dropping blind on their bombers. Necros are hardy enough to stand in the frontline for a bit, and can move to a more backline position after the first regroup.
4. I've been testing out different times to pop Death Shroud for the largest effectiveness. I've found that slightly after the initial frontline hit is a good time, because you'll have a chunk of condition removal on cooldown, and can Torment the enemy with good effectiveness.
5. I believe most fears have a 5-target max. So in large zerg vs. zerg, there's really no reason not to use it. However, in smaller scraps, it might not be a good thing, since keeping them tight and stuck in our bomb is a good thing. Dunno, I don't have a lot of fear in my kit, so I don't have a lot of experience. However, dropping Staff 5 at the beginning of a zerg is definitely a good thing, since it will disrupt (up to) 5 enemies.
6. I'm not entirely sold on "wells pulse healing". The healing amount isn't that large, so I'm not sure if it's really doing anything worthwhile. I might respec out of it and see how things go.

YOU'RE GOING TO MISS MY BIRTHDAY
https://podcast.tidalwavegames.com/
The almost singular exception being Traveler's.
its for the best
ill be back. Just need to walk away for a bit.
Ohreallyididntknowthat.
I'll be right back, I have some gems to spend.
I'd check the TP first, a lot of unwanted backpacks from black lion chests are on there, you might be able to nab the one you want without spending and gems at all.
I...
Yay!
Tonight is a party! im going away for the entire month of febru-any.
Come on out and wish me well on my voyages onto the sacred mountains to meditate and fast.
GREEN BL with RET - im going out on top.
Nightwish, Last Ride of the Day.
Launching in style. Also the acount bound wvw XP was removed from the patch as its 'not ready'. A month off was not enough. ;D
What?! Jeez.

Considering this is an off-brand blood lottery, are you going to be handing out off-brand sparkles(Which I have aptly named Sporkles)?
Why add new permanent content? You can just rework the old content and annual festivals until no one plays anymore.

I hope you like text. I have a bunch of things for us to do, one busywork, two class-specific, and two general.
Busywork:
Class-specific (Guardian):
I promise you that if you drop a rolling ball of murderers on the enemy's head they will melt.
you mean dont open your chests..... so that you get the increased drop rate...... right?
