When you start the game, before you load your save file, you can select an option called Mystery Gift. From there it is pretty self explanatory. Once you've downloaded the Wonder Card, you pick up the Pokemon from a girl that stands in the Pokemon Center.

Anyone want to help me on my completely unnecessary completionist quest to fill my Kalos pokedex? Just need a few tradebacks and then I'm done.

I would love some starters to fill up a pokedex if you guys have ones to spare. Only ones I would actually try to play with is Venisaur and Charizard.

I've definitely got a few spare chimchars if that interests you. Should be home in an hour and a half or so.

OK guys, I'm taking the leap of faith and breeding me a mofo'ing Haunter as my first ever project. What are the recommended stuffs to aim (IVs, I'd gather?) for that?

I'd like to build a team that includes said thing, but I have no idea how to go around doing that, so while I learn about such things, I'd like to raise the perfect Haunter for me. :P

@Drovek I have to say, at least on wifi (which is the extent of my competitive battling experience) that Mega-Gengar is an absolute monster. I've been using a protean greninja and mega gengar as my "always in" team and basing my last poke on the potential threats on the enemy team and Gengar has been putting in work. Great, great choice for a poke.

I have a couple potentially obvious questions that I can't seem to locate answers to. First, after discovering all 3 pokemon in someone's safari, do they still need to be online for me to encounter all 3? Also, is there any reason not to use my high level EV trained pokemon to breed 5IV stuff assuming I can somehow get a good ditto, or is better to use lower level none EV trained ones instead?

    1. No
    2. No reason, EVs don't play into breeding at all.

Anyone around for a trade evolution real quick?

However do be aware that if your pokemon is supposed to learn a move by leveling while in the daycare, the daycare will select a move to delete and replace with the new move, which could be mild to moderately annoying for you

It's much better than it used to be, though. It used to be that if you overwrote an egg move, you were just fucked forever. Now any move your pokemon has had (or had the ability to learn through level up) can be remembered for a heart scale.

It's better than that. Say you put in a pokemon with egg moves to be passed on. While you're making eggs, that pokemon levels up in day care.

Guess what? The egg moves may get overwritten on the parents, but they'll still pass them. As long as you leave them in day care, they'll keep passing the moves they had when you deposited them.

There's no risk. I clone everything.

Just be careful if you use the Mega-Gengar route - Smogon banned him for being too good at what he does (trapping and revenge killing), and there are a lot of people who consider him to be pretty cheap.

I mean, my Drifblim usually beats him (unless M-Gengar is Modest - then it's a coin flip), but he's not "counter-able" in the sense that you can easily switch in another guy to beat him once he's out.

Chen's version gives you a solid non-mega version that is still top rate in the meta game.

Yeah. I think if I made a Calm variant, he'd actually be even better than the Bold one I have now. Calm would be able to beat (Mega-)Gengar 100% of the time, life orb or no.

Weakness Policy Drifblim is one of the best-kept secrets of this generation. Beyond the somewhat gimmicky surprise value he has insane utility as a spinblocker, anti-ghost, hazer, and baton passer.

So it turns out that my brother deleted my white save, so I lost all my good pokes and my flawless japanese ditto (I think I got it from @RockinX). So... Does anyone have a good ditto to spare? I haven't even beat the game yet, so I don't have anything to give in return.

Why do people always forget that there are 510 total EVs? Even Serebii does this.

Doubt they forget, but since EVs divide by 4 the extra 2 don't do anything. Real question is why aren't there 508 or 512 EV total.s

Strictly speaking, according to Game Freak you're not really supposed to care about these things at all. I.e. in X/Y the hardcore audience will get tossed a few bones in the form of the IV checker or the fact that the super training affects EVs(which is probably incidental since they needed to connect the minigames to something to make it look like you're legitimately "training"), but you'll never get hard numbers from within a Pokemon game itself or much mention that these things even exist. Almost everything is done externally by fan calculations. Someone who is unfamiliar with the idea of IVs for example wouldn't even know what the IV checker is really even there for.

In practice there really isn't a reason from a competitive standpoint. Everyone would be running max IVs, and the whole concept is invalidated and may as well not be there.

But officially, "Individuality". The idea of having "no two Pokemon exactly the same" was a big marketing point when RBY first came out and Game Freak just continued to roll with it. They know that there are advanced players who work towards abusing these systems and are giving them quality of life things like the IV NPC and recent breeding mechanics(read: Destiny Knot) as a goodwill gesture to the advanced fans, but you're likely never going to see them add...let's say, an advanced statistics screen above and beyond the current one that will show you hard numbers on demand. That's not really the kind of game they want to foster.

It makes Pokemon appear simpler than it is, which is good for the younger players. More advanced players can dig into the min/maxing, and younger players can ignore all of that and roll Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Fire Spin, and Ember on their Charizard.

Why so many trade evos, Silence? The other day I saw you asked for more of them, but I wasn't available to help.

  • silence1186silence1186 Character shields down! As a wingmanRegistered User regular
I think there's 16 or so total in the Kalos dex? I've just been grinding the Kalos dex one by one, in order, and each time I get a guy who needs a trade evolution, I stick him in a box until I have 6, so I don't have to keep bothering people for each one, and instead do them in time efficient batches. After this batch I need rain to evolve my Goodra, and then go catch Zygarde and Mewtwo and then the Oval Charm is mine.

Then I'll probably start cranking out trade bait to fill the GTS with, since no one wants Chimchars, and start more seriously working on a team (but not really, since making a consistent team is challenging and subject to getting swept repeatedly on Showdown and rethinking the whole team from scratch).

  • CSStheGr8CSStheGr8 Registered User regular
If I'd done my homework I'd have gotten the items to evolve porygon or rhydon.

@cssthegr8 Thanks so much! 3 pokes to go until my Oval Charm.

I'll be checking the thread for the next 30-60 minutes if you find those items in time, and I'll help you evolve those guys.

  • CSStheGr8CSStheGr8 Registered User regular
Is the oval charm for just Kalos or the entirety of the dex? If just Kalos do you have an articuno I could get the dex entry from? Last thing I need.
