[Rust] Find some food, build a base, survive

Rust is a survival/building first person shooter from Garry of Garry's Mod fame. It's currently in alpha and is available on Steam Early Access. Rust is very much in the theme of DayZ, WarZ and other survival sandbox games. That said most of Rust, including base building actually works, right now. There are obviously alpha level bugs, but for the most part everything that's in the game works. Garry has said this is his design and development philosophy and one I think many of us can appreciate. Don't just keep piling features on a broken foundation, actually make sure the foundation of the game works.

So what all does Rust currently offer?

Crafting
The crafting system is really the heart of Rust. Anything you find in the world can be crafted once you have the blueprint (which can be found, or researched from the item itself). Crafting is also the core of the base building mechanic, as you will need to craft the materials needed to build your base.

Base Building
Tied in to the crafting system, Rust is all about putting together a base, defending it and expanding it. Everything in the world decays, so your base requires upkeep. Bases can also be raided, giving you a reason to be diplomatic and not an ass to everyone you meet. That newbie you shoot today may show up tomorrow with some C4 and ransack your base. Currently the materials available are somewhat limited, but you can still build incredibly expansive bases with defensible entry ways, murder holes, towers, storage vaults, you name it. Bases are incredibly important as your body stays in the world asleep when you log out of Rust. Without a base to protect you, you would likely be murdered and looted.

PvP Combat
Even with reasons not to shoot everyone you see, Rust is still a PvP environment where you can (and occasionally should) shoot other players. Currently the gun play is probably the weakest part of Rust, but Garry has said a future phase of alpha will focus exclusively on tightening up shooting.

PvE and No-sleep servers
Don't want to kill people? Just want to build a base and gather resources? PvE servers exist. In addition, no sleep servers exist. This means your body does not stay asleep in the game when you log off and cannot be killed.

So it's an alpha, so there has to be problems right? Of course:
  • The player animations and models are very rudimentary right now.
  • The net code, while functional, is not perfect.
  • The graphics overall are very alpha quality.
  • The server browser is laggy and bad, but functional enough to find a server.
  • The item and building material list is relatively small right now.

Even though large parts of the world are barren, there are lag issues, servers go down periodically and it's an obvious alpha, I can't get enough rust. It's just so addictive. I'm playing on NA3, got a pretty huge base going with some peeps I met ingame. If any PA people want to roll on my server I can help them get started. Once the servers come back up.

    delicious.

Most of the community servers are patched and back up, though the patch screwed up everyone's bases, so at least the server I play on went ahead and wiped. Which is fine with me, it's an alpha, and really these types of games are about easy come easy go.

So it seems some french script kiddies decided to exploit a bug in Rust's server middleware to bring a bunch of servers down. I guess they were protesting some features of the game they didn't like. Mature, right?

The middleware provider was working all weekend to patch the holes, so hopefully that's fixed soon. I guess one of the kids doing it was an idiot and posted a public IP that some people were able to trace, so I guess Garry is considering contacting french authorities. We'll see how far that goes.

What server do you play on? I'd love to join up with some PA folks when this server hubbub is done.

    delicious.
