@Voro I wouldn't suggest using a gamepad. @f3rret and @campy tried using one, I believe
I have it working decently now, but that's with the bottom of the barrel T1 biplanes. Only other problem thus far is whatever is preventing me from pitching down toward the ground beyond 30 degrees or so. I don't know if it's just arcade controls, but it makes strafing ground vehicles a pain in the ass.

7 losses in a row. 4 of them as the top person in the leaderboard. At least I can go after ground targets for a little bonus money.
I even got 'down tiered' (in so far as being in a tier 1 plane against soft ground targets is being down tiered). The game wanted me to decimate biplanes in my LaGG 3. Nothing like Fighter's Nightmare, the most ground target kills on the team and a loss to show how awesome the matchmaker is.
Not as much Yer-2 rushing today, but still a fair amount of airbase spam.

It's possible if you've had a lot of practice with the controller that you'll do well with the controller. It'll certainly serve you very well in realistic battles if that's the case, fine control surface control becoming a lot more important there.
I'd still recommend at least giving mouse control a go, the shooting accuracy I gained from it was immense. It does make me sad to see my joystick languishing in obsolescence though .

Biplanes were owning my ass. Now I'm understanding where you don't want to be involved in a turn fight when the opponent can easily out manuever you.
Is it worth spending gold eagles on research to hurry out of tier 1 planes?
If you were going to spend golden eagles I would recommend either getting a premium plane, or depending on how much you would spend looking at the Steam packs they have available. They come with a premium plane, eagles, and premium time.
@Cincitucky you wanted a Mustang, right? They have a Mustang pack on Steam, depending on how much you were thinking of spending.
Yeah, a higher tier plane of your nation choice from a pack is a great way to make lions/rp in realistic.
With the Steam packs you get the benefit of a premium plane and nough eagles to get a premium plane in another nation (mostly)
You could get the American Mustang then have enough eagles to get the British Mustang Mark 1A with 4x20mm His piano cannons (if you were working on British)

Was trying to take the hardwork approach to acquire the planes. Thinking that's for the birds with how bad I was getting schooled.

The hardest part about flying a Mustang is to not let your expectations of it get the better of you.
A lot of people get discouraged by it or think the plane is crap because they're trying to fly it like a Zero or Spitfire instead of a boom and zoomer. It can also be tricky because you're boom n zooming with wing mounted guns, so you have to keep your convergence in mind.

Sadly for me, the four Steam packs currently out have nothing I want--especially for the cost. I'd rather just drop the $6-$9 for the actual aircraft I want rather than the bundles. Then again, I am going through the Japanese tree. I suppose for the MM, if/when you lose that high-ranking aircraft, you can just return to hangar and try again.
My framerate-freezing problem is still going on, and I'm wondering if it's due to the Steam client. Time to uninstall and try the independent client.

It's official. I can't hit with the guns on the MkIIb Spit.

I would suggest looking at the Steam pack. The A6M5 Ko is a buttload of fun (and RP Juggernaut), if you start working on Americans you'll have a premium plane ready, and the month of premium paired with the Ko is great. Plus, with 1700 Golden eagles you can pick up just about any other Japanese premium plane, I think.
The one downside to the A6M5 ko is that you can only get it through the Steam pack.

I already did. I'm doing Army Fighters at the moment, so only attractive part of the deal, the A6M5, isn't really suitable right now (I've adjusted to balance of the Ki-61). $25 is more than I want to spend on the game model at the moment, even though the single-player campaigns are interesting.
Maybe a better deal will come up eventually. They need an "Anton" pack to go with the Dora Pack.
Bombing was borked last night. Tier II. On the Gorge map, I was flying a Ki-49 (not sure which version, probably the first). I had 4x250kg bombs. One pass and I destroyed the left most base. Within 5 minutes, all but the airfield was destroyed and the airfield was more than halfway down.
I was probably have a really bad night. I felt impotent with American and German fighters. I think I maybe shot down 6 planes in 4 games. The last game was understandable since I turned off the leading indicator, so I was adjusting to that, but still. Last night was terrible for me.
Another thing is, I was trying to barrel roll and I obviously don't understand it. I hold A or D for left/right ailerons and I just roll over. When I incorporate W or S for up/down elevators, my planes starts spazzing out. Obviously I need to re-watch the posted videos. Again.

Spazing out how? When I barrel roll, I don't use only keys. I probably use them only for roll.
Mouse up, initiate roll with A or D, and then basically use my mouse to spiral around while maintaining the roll.
If you use the keys only, the aircraft will try to return to the center of your screen (where your mouse it pointed).
That sounds like me with the indicator on, if that makes you feel better.
Either it'll take me a long time to move away from trying to play the game like Il-2: 1946, or I'm just stuck that way because of how long I've played flight simulation in general. Unfortunately, playing it HOTAS wasn't really enjoyable outside of a lucky battle in simulation mode where everything worked properly (this was many months ago).

I've had the same experience... Those bases die way quicker than before. Anyone else able to confirm?

Maybe a bug in the bomb/loadout? A while ago, the Swordfish's torpedo could knock those out in one hit.

Question. If I have this premium Mustang will I be forever put into tier 4 matches? Or can I simply switch that plane out for my tier 2 planes when I don't want to play a higher level game?

You should be able to put the Mustang on holiday when you don't, unless I'm misunderstanding how this works.

The Match Maker *attempts* to match you with what ever tiers you have loaded in your crew slots. If you have a T4 Mustang in the first slot and T2 in the rest, it'll try to match you to T4. You can swap that Mustang out with another T2 aircraft and it'll try to match you to T2 (though you'll probably end up against a bunch of Yer-2s anyway )

On Steam, during the winter sale they had a few weeks ago, they had 50% off of all the packs, with some daily packs being 66-75% off. Maybe wait until the spring sale?
Is the P-38 any good in game? Since being very little, I've always liked that plane.
How can it not be? According to Capcom a single P-38 destroyed the entire Japanese fleet at Midway, in part because it could cause tsunamis by looping.

There only were the four of them up there.
I got the generic Steam pack, but was tempted to get the others since they were super cheap.
Man, did I absolutely suck last night. Got a couple of matches in after late-night work, and just got absolutely demolished in all of them.
Favorite highlights of the evening include:
On the gorge map with the boats, I start by climbing to 3km height, and notice two enemy planes flying low-and-slow after our ships; the enemies don't seem to realize I'm up there. So, I target the trailer, roll in (with actually a pretty sweet lag displacement roll), and begin my dive. He continues low and slow in a nice, straight line, so obliviousness is confirmed. 1 second before I tighten up on the triggers, he slams into the mountain side, and dies.
No problem, I think, I'll just get the leader! So I pull back up to maintain total energy, rather than letting it bleed off flying level, and level out at about 1-ish km, still well above the guy. He makes a pass on our boats, and does a hard, horizontal turn for a second pass - and, again, shows no indication that he knows I'm there. I pass him, pull a split-S to get onto his tail, and, again just about 1s before I start shooting, he gets lit up by the boats and crashes into the water.
The rest of that match basically consisted of 3 enemies in bombers (PB- something or other, some German plane) running the table on our ground forces. At one point, the bad guy in the PB had 4 of us shooting at him, and he largely just ignored us and ripped apart a half-dozen ground targets.
... and then the same guys showed up in the next match, on the same map, and did the same thing over again.
And boy do I need to stop entering turn fights with biplanes. It never ends well.
But seriously, fuck getting rammed by a biplane, going down in flames, and then watching him wing his merry way off to go shoot someone else.
Also, I've found it really, really difficult to look behind me and pick the guy on my tail as a target, which makes the "Look at your target" button much harder to use defensively. I need to get deeper into the control customization menu to see if there's something there that'll make that easier.
I also suspect that I need to switch to kbam instead of kbaj (in arcade, at least), but that just seems wrong.
What's the criteria for getting an assist in this game, BTW? There are lots of occasions where I'll pour machine gun fire into someone, rack up some hits, and then someone will come in and blow it up, and I get nada.

I think it has to do with timing. Like you have 60 (wild guess) seconds for the target to go down for you to get the assist. So if you rake the target and someone kills them 61 seconds later, you get zilch.
Also double check that you don't have bonuses turned off in the UI settings.
