Muahahahahahahaha
Boom and zoom is why. And also the lack of Tier V planes (previously level 18 - 20).
Though I feel Japan has gotten a lot more attractive as a nation thanks to the addtion of the ki-84 line. Where it used to be just Shiden-Kais, which I love flying, but they go up against some other stellar props.
Other than that I agree with TOGSolid, unknown is unloved.
They do climb like absolute beasts, but I really suck at B&Z so can't utilise it well.

Japanese tactics: Bank and turn in any direction, snap roll, elevator, and suddenly you're going 180 degrees the other direction. Most planes on your tail can't make that quick turn. Keep your new turn and bam, you're on the enemie's tail.
The real trick is living long enough to do it.

The 7TP's 37 mm apparently was apparently effective penetrating the Panzer III's IV's armor at the time. Forget the I and II, which were more common.
Not really an issue when Germany has way, way more of them.
I'll admit, I decided to start playing as the Japanese largely because I saw the trailers for that new (last ) Hayao Miyazaki film The Wind Rises, a fictionalized biographical film about Jiro Horikoshi (the guy who invented the Mitsubishi A5M)

A Miyazaki film and it makes aeronautical engineers look cool?
Correct. That Bofors(?) 37mm is no slouch in the early periods. Its also the basis of the 37mm in early Italian tanks. The early T26s are basically 7TPs too.
A tad bit off topic, but Miyazaki isn't retiring. He said he was around the time the movie was released, then retracted it a few days ago basically saying he's changed his mind. He's done this 7 to 10 times now depending on how you want to count it, so it's not really surprising.
I hadn't heard that, that's good news. Yeah, I've heard he was going to retire after like every one of his major movie releases, but hey, the next time might always be for real.
Right now, I'm really loving the first of the japanese Heavy Fighters. As previously expressed, though I like the Japanese, early on you feel like you're throwing rocks at other planes for all the damage you tend to do. I like being able to shoot down bombers, and not have my wooden plane torn to pieces by their turret in the process.
Some tank footage.
Gods I want to play this.
Explains compression of flight surfaces pretty well a couple of minutes in.
Just wish I was as good with my P-38

Man, my favorite part about Japan's twin engine craft is how abso-fucking-lutely huge the engines are. They just scream "HOLD ON TO YOUR ANUS, WE'RE GOING INTO ORBIT BITCHES!."
Japan kinda blows at BNZ. Their heavy fighters and the Ki-61 line can do "ok" in a dive but they're still not that great. Japanese planes are really light so they tend to lock up to varying degrees when put into a hard dive. Their light weight also means they bleed energy like fucking crazy which means you need to be really spot on with your approach or you can end up vulnerable. With Japanese planes you want to use their climbing ability to get up to where the BNZers are loitering and seal club the shit out of them. If you wanna be sneaky you go high to scope out where the action is happening, dip into the clouds, then pop out right on top of the BNZers and go to work.
If you have to dive into a furball then you want to make sure to always go for a generous lag pursuit to give yourself enough wiggle room due to the nasty habit of Japanese planes locking up in a dive due to their lightweight construction. The exception is if you're diving on a bomber or a plane with really low energy, then you can pretty much just pounce them however you wish.
Japanese planes are pretty fragile. It's the price they pay for having such amazing handling and absurd climbing abilities. They are the nation to pick for balls out aggressive players because you have to be on top of and chewing up everything in your vicinity to survive. The complaint about their Tier 1 guns sucking is absolutely valid and sadly there's not much you can do about it except suck it up until tier 2. But man, when you get that first Zero and go on a murderspree it makes all the waiting worth it.

Hands-down the best fighter to kill, bar none.

I haven't been enjoying the Ki84 much. Is it a dogfighter or BnZer?
The ammo shortage is definitely a problem for the Zero - once you're down to MGs, it's nearly pointless trying to chase someone around with them. That's one reason the Russians do so crap at Realistic Battles, what with their bringing 300 bullets to the whole fight.
This is why I love American planes. I aced for the first time in Realistic Battles using a P-47 and flew the whole mission without a reload.
The weaknesses of MGs aside, I think the ammo problem is more one of trigger discipline - and of bad habits carried over from arcade mode, where spraying shots in the rough direction of the lead indicator is a valid tactic. The Japanese planes have the maneuverability to get on someone's tail in dogfights, and stay there. The trick with them in RB, I've found, is to learn to use that maneuverability to its fullest (which in itself isn't easy, what with all those boom'n'zoomers outpacing you so easily) and then to only take shots when you know you'll hit!
But damn is it satisfying to destroy an enemy plane with a single squeeze of the trigger!

Those clips (especially the first Wings one) was like a flashback to 1997. Run home from high school, grab some chips and salsa, and turn on Wings.
This.
I'm always torn between going center mass to try damaging the elevators and rudder or the wing to light it on fire.
Yesterday I was clipping a lot of P39 wings
Would it work to set convergence really long (say 800m) and try to shoot between the wings and center mass and end up hitting both?

I really want to use my joystick, but mouse aim + WSADQE is simply superior in arcade and RB

I'll be home around 130 if you want to test it out
For consideration: assuming your wing-mounted guns are half your wing span apart, and the wing span of your target is identical, then at 400 meters distance your shots will still hit the target only a quarter wing span apart, i.e. the distance between your own center of mass and one of your guns. Not sure that's worth it...

Not to mention a lot of wasted ammo goes toward trying to find the proper lead for your shots (when you suck at it like I do). I set my convergence to 300m and generally don't fire outside that range.
I just feel the American 50-cals have the same effectiveness as the Japanese cannons overall, so you're left at a disadvantage in longer engagements.
So I hopped in my Mig 3 and got a couple of kills. Wasn't really impressed. Was being out turned by most everything. Got my wing taken off by a Yak
So I hop in the IL
Holy shit this is civilization. I go on a 14-0 tear. Just blowing planes out of the sky with one or two bursts of the trigger.
I think this can't be a real thing. I'm flying a huge target around at between 250-280 KPH. How are they not killing me. Finally I get a teamate who decides he wants to try and park his P36 on my canopy. Game over.
I load up one more match before bed.
Hop in the Yak7 this time. Again get around 3 kills before being out turned and taken out.
Click enter battle with the IL2 and go on another 11 kill streak. I aced the IL2 in two matches.
Should I feel bad? I should....

I also did one British Realistic battle (Bulge?) in a Wellington. I had 18 250kgs bombs. The handling on that thing suuucked, so my first round of bombing was less than ideal. I got hit by a few AA and limped back to back where I repaired and rearmed. Second pass had me shoot down two pilots, bomb the remaining 10 ground targets and win the round for our team.
Overall, Realistic battles are kind of fun.

There are plenty of aces with lots of kills, but it's stuff like this that's just too crazy be true. And yet it is.
I will probably have to dump my joystick too. Between the instability from their admittedly broken flight model and inherently lower aiming precision, it's quite difficult to compete with a joystick. It'd be nice if they put in separate queues for mouse or joystick users in arcade, because right now it's like playing a FPS with a controller against someone using KBM, frustrating as hell.
I'm going to give joystick & mouse another try. The only problem with that setup is that you have to follow your movements with the mouse in mouse aim mode, same as with WSAD - but if you use it like that, it would at least give you more control over the degree of banking, which is pretty much the only hard to control thing with mouse aim.

Yeah, the queue times are really short so I don't see how it would hurt to at least try out a joystick only mode. The queue would certainly be longer on the joystick side, but I definitely wouldn't mind the wait.

Well, Simulation mode requires a joystick, and we have that already. An arcade joystick-only version would be nice though...

Pretty sure if I ever played without enemy tags I'd just end up carving my own team.
