Small note for anyone who just got the 360 version.

Is it just me or do the shots on the back look like they are from the PS2 version?

So I just got my hands on the 360 version (I've never played either PS2 version), and I have to say I'm really impressed. The menu interface has a lot of style, which I'm digging quite a bit. It seems way easy to lose a whole bunch of time to this game.

I do have one complaint, though: Either I have no idea how to use the Whammy bar, or the rumors floating around about a guitar recall must be true. I can't get that thing to work at all. Anyone else having problems with this, or heard anything new about the recall?

Yeh, I mentioned in the previous thread that I was having troubles with mine, it only seems to work half the time, or maybe when it's at a specific angle.

    xbox360guitarsmall2.jpg

Apparently there are two versions of the guitar, and the bottom one in this picture is the one that has whammy bar problems. I'm pretty sure that's the one I've got. :(

Yeah, me too. And I'm just not sure if I'm playing the game wrong or not. I've no frame of reference for how the whammy bar's supposed to work, is the only reason I'm asking. But I just find it really difficult to use.

If I have to send it back, I'll be a mite peeved. I've had exceedingly bad luck with 360 hardware and related accessories just plain not working for me.

Edit: Ah, yeah, that's the one I have too, bslinger. :( Didn't know about it being sensitive to the angle you hold the guitar at, though. I might mess around for a bit more to see if it's more responsive while sitting down.

I actually meant which angle the bar itself is at, not the guitar. It seems to work better if the whammy bar is rotated down a bit further than I usually like to have it.

Apparently there ISNT a recall on them at Target based on the comments in that joystiq article.

Several target employees said that there was a hardlock on the game in the computer to prevent selling before 4-3. If one got rang up, it would print out a recall notice, and not allow a sale of it.

But some idiot forgot to REMOVE the hardlock, so for several hours they couldnt sell it because of that.

As for the controllers... Well, i spent my $3 for the warranty at GS, so Im good for a year with that one.

I'd like it if they showed your leaderboard position at the end of the song when you see your score.

I think it'd also be cool if you could make a leaderboard group that people could join, instead of having just overall and friends only. Say, I'd like to know how I stack up against the PA shredders without adding every single one of you to my friends list.

I have the version of the Guitar with the RJ-10 cable on the bottom and my Whammy Bar works completely fine. Be sure to hold down the strum bar when you strike the chord and then use the whammy while you are still holding it. It took me a little while to realize I had to do it like that, but when I do, it's perfectly alright.

So, I don't know if I can ever get better at this game. I'm up to the 5th or 6th set of songs on easy and aside from one song, cant do better than 3 stars. I tried the first song on medium and couldn't deal with the blue notes. When I am playing my pinky tends to curl behind the guitar, and forcing it to stay on the blue note messes my other fingers up when trying to hit notes quickly. Any advice at all?

Yeah... don't use your pinky. Learn to start moving your hand up and down the neck of the guitar now before you get any bad habbits. Only time I ever use my pinky is for green to orange notes (and even then, not all the time) or when I am slipping up and need to catch myself.

Later in hard and expert mode you'll realise most songs are played around a certain chord, and that is where I like to keep my hand. So in some songs i'll keep my pointer finger on the red or yellow button by default, and just move my hand up when I need to.

What, no. The pinky is vital on hard and expert. When I don't need the orange, I simply keep 1 finger for each button, and if I need the orange, I slide my entire hand up one fret so I'm covering the last for buttons with each finger. It's rare that you need green and orange right after each other so that works well for me.

Yeah, the pinky is pretty important, so I would learn it early on if possible.

I have an easier time playing chords by just moving my hand up and down the neck and using my pointer and ring fingers though.

I'm at work, but all I want to do is get home and play. This is bad. I'm lucky we have a long weekend! The pink is a crappy yet necessary finger. A lot of times, it helps to move your hand up and down and have your ring finger assist your pinky when pressing down. At least I have noticed that for myself. The pinky gives you some extra reach and the ring finger adds more pressure and speed.

So... I should use just three fingers and move my hand up and down for blue and orange notes, or I should use my pinky and move my hand for orange notes? Seems like it would be easier to not use the pinky, but if it is necessary later on then I would be effectively handicapping myself by not learning it.

Use your pinky. I don't see how it's possible to do a HOPO across all 5 notes without using the pinky, you'd have to shift your hand.

Use your PINKY! Seriously it may look easy by not using it, it is pretty fucking hard. Unless you're Django Reinhart.

On a lighter note, finally getting my first five stars on expert songs! Finally, after months of practicing, I can do expert without failing my ass off.

Finally got my fix last night after work and I'm already jonesing for more.

I got to play through a few tiers of songs and I'm torn about the set-list so far. Up to this point, only a few tracks have really stuck out to me as a good time. Granted, I'm playing these on medium for the achievements and to unlock the whole set-list, so the intricacy of the playing isn't particularly tough, but most of the low-level songs pale in comparison to the low-level offerings from the first game. We'll see how my opinion changes about bullshit like Possum Kingdom and Heart Shaped box once I ratchet the difficulty up to Expert. On the positive side, I have a new warm-up track: Carry On My Wayward Son. In the first game, I'd get warmed up to More Than A Feeling since the verse really kept your fret hand moving. This seems to be true with Kansas. Also, Monkey Wrench is a blast!

Ad for the guitar, I've defended it based on my brief experiences with the demo units, but I played those standing up and for only a few minutes at a time. While I'm hardly a lazy bastard, I do like to chill and have a seat while I play and I have yet to find a comfortable position with this thing. It's hardly a deal breaker. I'm a fairly animated Guitar Hero player even when I'm by myself so my neighbors must think I'm an asshole as they pass my house. There I am, holding a little plastic guitar, rocking the fuck out all by myself in my living room. Small price to pay since I'm sure they already think I'm a dick, but I really need to find a good seated position to play this game.

It feels good to finally own this game whereas before I simply hijacked a friend's for several weeks.

Does this game seem to lag a bit more than the PS2 version for anyone? All the controls from the buttons to the whammy bar seem sluggish to respond.
