Free (really!) Credit Report with Score?

fightinfilipinofightinfilipino Angry as Hell#BLMRegistered User regular
so after reading a bit about the Target data breach and the free credit reporting and monitoring they're offering, my mind got to wondering: are there legitimate, non-scummy ways to actually get a free credit score report? i'd do a web search, but i trust those results about as much as i trust google with my search history (i don't).

Credit Karma is probably the best, although it's not super accurate.

All three credit bureaus are required by law to give you a free copy of your credit report every year, which can be obtained at www.annualcreditreport.com.

Anywhere else offering you a free credit report (and anywhere offering you a free score, which is a different thing) is part of a promotion to get you to sign up for a credit monitoring service.

right, i actually take advantage of the free report once a year, to keep tabs on things.

i'm really asking about the credit score part, since those are usually never free or tied to some fee subscription service.

Yeah, I don't think you can get a free score anywhere. You can get one from any of the bureaus for like 10-15 bucks, but honestly, as long as you are monitoring the report, the score will take care of itself.

I just got a free score, actually. It takes a bit of shenans. I just did it a few months ago.

You can get it from myfico.com, this site is actually run by fico, so it's legit. They have some 30-day trial thing that you can cancel out of before they bill you.

FAKE EDIT: Actually I just checked it and they bumped it to $5 from $free for the first month. Well, $5 isn't too bad if you want a proper fico score.

one of the reasons i'm asking is because there's a high likelihood i'll be applying to rent a new apartment in the coming months, and some of the places i'm looking at require the applicant to provide their own report and score.

kind of weird to me, i'm used to the landlord or management company doing it, but eh.

I have heard of places that require you to have an application deposit to cover the cost of them doing the report... but that's odd that you would have to provide your own. I would think providing your own would be bad for them.

Depends on the market. In SF/Bay Area, we had to provide our own credit reports or pay for them to run them.

It was over 100 points off the last time I used it. Borderline unusable IMO

This is the landlord being cheap. Every place that required a credit check, THEY did it (I assume at their cost).

If you have a Discover credit card they are supposed to start putting free credit scores on your monthly statement. I think it's supposed to start this month.

Edit: Apparently it's not just Discover. http://www.bankrate.com/financing/credit-cards/discover-gives-free-credit-score/
They mention Barclay and First National of Omaha. So if you have a card through any of them you should be able to get it for free. I just checked and can confirm that at least Barclay does indeed have this available (and incidentally my CreditKarma estimate is about 25 points off, which is worse than it's been in the past when I've had both available to compare).

Mine and my girlfriends are about 30 points off.

100 points... maybe you looked at the wrong score? CK has vantage and transunion there. Vantage scores tend to be much higher, and no where near FICO.

nope. i was looking at the right score. over 100 points below what it really was

credit karma does not accurately weight things like positive account history in my opinion

the longer your credit history is the worse it gets

There are also usually coupon codes around for discounts on the one-off reports at MyFico.

On the target thing, if you name and info was stolen, besides the credit report mentioned, what else should be done to make sure your ok?

I would take advantage of Target's offer of free credit monitoring and identity protection (over here). Also had my wife cancel the debit card (keep account, just get a new card) she used there.

  • DyasAlureDyasAlure SeattleRegistered User regular
The card is canceled, that was done. Just the person is worries about it. I'm not so sure I am, but figure hey why not ask. I will send them that direction see if they are interested. Thanks for the reply though.

I dunno about free, but I did get scores from all three agencies for $5 total. I wasn't expecting to get all of them, this is what happened.

I got my free credit report, and was curious about my score so I paid Experian the $5 they were charging to see that information (from them only). Then as soon as reviewing it and seeing all was well, I called Experian to cancel the service. As soon as I said I wanted to cancel, the guy on the phone offered me all three credit scores for nothing extra, which would go into effect 5 min after I ended the call (meaning I wouldn't be cancelling during that call). I agreed to it so I could see all three scores, and I'm glad I did because Transunion had some invalid information on it lowering my score with them. I disputed it and they erased it.

Now I don't know if that particular call agent was just plucky as all hell, smart enough to keep those cancels off of his metrics by offering me something that I actually did want, or if it's Experian's policy to offer all three scores at the same $5 cost if you call to cancel.
