As a sales driver the Wii U is a failure and I can't imagine what would turn it around.
As a platform for playing Nintendo games on, it's pretty great. Also has some really, really, really good character action going on with the Platinum Games exclusives.
I’ve started to grow fond of people who like the MOTHER games, but to put that in a cooler way, I might say, “The very lives you’re living now are MOTHER 4.” I really feel that way. “Today we had lots of ridiculous thoughts, today we felt sadness, today we laughed a lot.” That’s what I had set out to do within the world of those games.

Just wishful thinking I guess. I was thinking about Nintendo and how most of the games they've been putting out recently have been revamps of old-school formulas and it was like, man, I don't care about mario anymore, I don't want another Donkey Kong sidescroller, Link Between Worlds was awesome but I don't think I ever want another top-down Zelda. Mario Kart and Smash Bros both look amazing but they're still just improving on past formulas. Then I thought, Earthbound, in 3d, on a 3DS or a Wii U, that's the kind of thing that would get me excited about Nintendo again. That or a new IP.

I just want to see Mother 3 localized, perhaps on the Wii U GBA Virtual Console. Though, I get the feeling it'd feel strange, reading the game with whatever localization they go with, after going through Tomato's script.

This. I want to play Mother 3 on my 3DS without having to download the ROM to a flashcart or something. And I want to be able to play Earthbound on my 3DS, not just on my not-yet-purchased Wii U.
Even if they did, would they release it in the west?
Even if they did... would it be fun? Would they evolve the game or keep it similar to appease fans?
I recently tried again to finish Earthbound and the combat system still bores me to tears as it did in the 90s. It's a shame really... a little animation would have gone a looong way. Watching a static image of an enemy on a psychedelic background for dozens of hours grows stale really quickly.
The presentation itself still doesn't look much different from Earthbound. Static enemies and backgrounds that look like they were pulled directly out of WinAmp.
I used to rag on Final Fantasy (pre-VII) for having static images for their enemies with very little animation. I started as a Sega guy so my first 16-bit RPG was Shining Force which was fantastically animated for a 16-bit game made in 1992. Lucky for me I had some great friends that convinced me to give Final Fantasy a chance despite my animation preferences.
When I got a SNES near the end of it's lifecycle and plowed through every JRPG I possibly could, at the time, I had a hard time enjoying those JRPGs that had very little animation. I used to call Square lazy for it's enemy designs. Funny how that one turned out in the end.
Oh, yes the presentation is largely the same - I've heard similar complaints elsewhere about the battle scene style - in that series's case it's all an homage to the dragon quest games itoi had played when he was in a hospital

I levied the same complaint at Dragon Quest games, to be fair.
I only started enjoying the series at VII when the enemies were fully animated. (Still holding out hope we get the 3DS version here)
The only reason I managed to finish Dragon Warrior was that it was relatively short. It was over before the combat wore itself thin.
So I just remembered that I'm part of that Best Buy Gamers Club thing that gets me 20% off game prices...which means that Batman would have been $16 instead of $20.
Of course I remember this mere minutes after the sale has ended. Whoops.
Oh well, it'll be back down to that price soon enough.
With static images it looks more like a boardgame, it's just visualizing the information you need. What the battle really looks like is up to you.
With animated models it's like you and the enemy are REALLY there! And you're both standing still...waiting your turn...which looks super dumb.
Man it's a VIDEO game, they're gonna need to meet me halfway. With the models, you just take D&D logic and every turn is a few seconds long "in reality."
Ugh. Of course I was not at home much this week and someone seems to have stolen my $10 copy of ZombiU that I ordered from Amazon. Bah. I should request a refund. I had the same thing happen to a controller two months ago and they replaced it right away, but I don't want it to seem fishy.
Rather than Mother 4, I'd say maybe make an HD collection or something. All three games, maybe use the same sort of art style seen with the models found in the manuals and things (assuming something more hand-drawn looking wouldn't work as well), or even the style seen in the Smash Bros. games for the characters.

Because that is literally the onlybreqson they havent
The music has no bearing on why Mother 3 wasn't released here. it was rumored that the music was holding Earthbound back, but the release of the game without any music being removed shows that it wasn't.
Mother 3 was never released because Nintendo assumed people in the US didn't care about the franchise. They used the poor sales of Earthbound to justify that.
Now that Earthbound has been released via the VC and it sold well enough that they evened mentioned it in the NPD press release gives me hope that we may actually get Mother 3 released via VC also eventually, especially now that GBA games are being released.
The Wii U is an abject failure, and one of the worst Nintendo has had in years. There is very little they can do to reverse things as the competition and the Wii U's flaws really kill any attempt gain some momentum.
However, the Wii U has plenty of fun games and the only real question is whether or not you like what the Wii U is cooking. The system has depth but no breadth: if you don't like platformers or Nintendo's very standard lineup of IP refreshes they do every console cycle, then you will probably not be happy with your purchase as there is very little outside of that core of the system's library. However, if you eat that shit up then you'll probably enjoy the Wii U as much as you would any other Nintendo console.
To be frank, I'd wager that the Wii U won't fall all that short of having the same library of solid games as the Wii did. The Wii just had a ton of shovelware.
This is what I end up telling my friends when they ask me why I own a WiiU. If you enjoy Nintendo games then buy the hell out of it. If not then just wait a bit and get one cheap down the road for a few of the 3rd party exclusives. I have a PC and WiiU so I think I'm set on multiplatform games.
I'm sure I'll own either the XBO or PS4 in the future but right now I have a ton to play.
A combination of this, high translation effort, poor eb performance, gba phase out due to ds/gba split focus taking the blame for poor brain age sales, noa's built-in mysterious anti-mother bias, heavy subject matter in what looks like a kid's game, there are many potential reasons
I'm really liking tropical freeze a ton! The music and art are both incredible. My only quibble so far is that I don't like the multiple exits in a stage deal.
The thing is that Earthbound already got cleared once, so it'd be more difficult to go up to a judge and claim foul on any of the music. "So...why didn't you complain back in the 90s?" It probably wouldn't be worth the hassle.
Mother 3 would be a new release and I feel like the music is a bit more blatant in the homages and inspirations. I mean, a boss fight early on has a theme involving the 60s Batman theme. It might be totally legal, but the effort to comb through everything for an international release may be more trouble than it's worth. Also, while Earthbound sold well on VC, that didn't require Nintendo to make a new translation. I guess they could just straight up ask for the fan translation and would probably get it in a heartbeat, but I doubt they'd roll that way.

The team that did the excellent fan translation already straight up sent the translation files to Nintendo and requested they use them if it meant getting the game over here legally.
I doubt Nintendo would use it either, but it was a pretty awesome gesture.

That ... that looks kinda awesome. I like how almost all the text is like a poem ... never really paid much attention to this game but it has my attention now.

Not gonna happen as the series creator said that he considers the franchise complete and finished with Mother 3.

It's a cool interview
...will be on the 3DS, not Wii U
Actually if Nintendo just wants to keep paying Platinum to make games for them I'd be okay with that too. They have more than enough original ideas.

As much as I would love that, it won't happen without Itoi, and he has stated he has no desire to return to the franchise post Mother 3.
Too bad though, Earthbound and Mother 3 are two of the best and most thought provoking games of all time.
