Thinking between 8 and 10 est tonight. It is right outside our base so we will e running protection as much as possible.

Gonna postpone until probably a friday/weekend night since work is so busy for me lately that by the time I get home I lack the energy to run these kinds of things haha

I thought using a research kit required paper

I'm 95% sure I have used them without paper in inventory.

With that said, what else is there to research; I have rad armor, leather armor, bar, silencer, most metal pieces, 556 and shotgun shells, probably other things I'm missing..

my last two research kits went to small and large medkit over either leather or rad armor, mostly because I have probably three sets of them stashed just from killing zombies. probably going to chuck the next couple into metal pillar and ceiling, and after that nothing would seem to be a priority since you can't research most mods or top-tier weapons.

Not to be super paranoid but it's probably better to talk about item locations in the base over voice on Vent or something, rather than where everyone can immediately go 'Oh, the stuff is there'

Myself and some others are having a good time on Sliver's server.

We've become probably the biggest group there, there are about 12-13 of us in total although rarely are we all on at once.

Anyways, we've taken to calling ourselves the Hobos, partly because my steam name is Trevor the Singing Hobo, and partly because when we started playing we lived in a little shanty town like hobos and all slept in one big pile for warmth (ya that's the ticket!).

Yesterday we built a structure we call the "Hobo-dome". It's a fighting pit. An arena, with two antechambers. Each room contains a large storage crate. In the crate is a sleeping bag and a weapon. Each combatant places their items in the storage crate, and places the sleeping bag on the floor. When the time is right: TWO MEN ENTER - ONE MAN LEAVES.

The arena is small, 2 squares by 2 squares. It contains obstacles and cover. In the middle is a crate with the prizes: Metal shards, water bottles, food, and sometimes more.

Winner takes all. The loser can respawn at the sleeping bag he placed in order to retrieve his items.

Hopefully we have the first Hobo-games tonight. If you have a character on Sliver's server, come join us tonight. If you don't have a character here, winning a match might get you some good starting materials.

The fights will be between two naked men. The weapons will either be stones, hatchets, or sometimes low quality guns (with a limited number of bullets!)

Hey @Dissociater, some friends and I are on Sliver's server too. I'm Robotic Sumbitch on Steam. We don't have much to offer, but just thought I'd let you know we're out there.

Alright, feeling pretty good about my place on pie's server now: I've built up and fortified my shack a bit more, and I've avoided Morris completely so far today so I was finally able to get everything I needed to build a 9mm and some kevlar. Still have a lot of work left on the shack, but I like it so far. Sometimes I just leave it all opened up and log out with my stuff...seems safer that way.

Can you destroy spiked walls? I placed some badly in low light and they clip through the wall into my spot. Pickaxing them seems...counterproductive

...by which I mean I've already died once trying that...and then went back and tried again just to be sure. Yeah...

Well, either we have a traitor, or @iamthepieman something is super glitched out or hacked with our metal base.

Our top floor was cleared out. The front door was apparently destroyed, and replaced by someone who has shared with me (If it was you, say something!). Someone blew into the 2nd floor, into an empty storage room. From the 2nd floor to the top floor, there is 0 sign of forced entry in any way shape or form. Pie I am 99.9% sure there is no legitimate way for someone to have jumped or otherwise accessed our base, and certainly not gotten into that top floor without blowing at least a pair of doors that are still untouched.

Is there anything in the logs you can look at to figured out what happened? This happened between 12 and 2pm PST based off accounts.

Edit: Also, when/why did F1 grenade crafting get disabled?

The logs are crap. They are a glorified chat log unfortunately. I don't see kills, dmg, crafting, door opening, crate opening or any of the things that would be useful.

I'll ask the perpetrators tomorrow mostly cause I'm super curious how they managed it. I'm pretty certain it will set your mind at ease with regards to fishiness as the perps are something of a sleeper burglar cell.

I maintain confidentiality unless it was a hack. That way good burglars can tell me about it without fear of being exposed and I can add their tricks to my bag.

ok, it's clearly not realistic but it's not exploiting or hacking. That's all I mean by legit. You used to be able to place sleeping bags while jumping. It's since been patched out but I wouldn't have banned someone for doing that if the game allowed it.

edit: well, it's exploiting a weakness in the game design but still not hacking or bannable.

If that's how it was done it is really lame. It's early access so stuff like this doesn't bug me too much, but it does kinda suck.

Also Devman I think you just ran across us in the field at a bad time. We ran into someone that had killed me previously and were going for them and I guess we stumbled into you and shot too. I have to say the firefights in this game are really awesome when they last a decent amount of time.

Listen, I want to head this off before it gets too crazy off topic:

If that is what happened, we are still at fault for not barring off our windows, else they would not have been able to get in in that manner.

However, that being said, that method is still so far outside the realm of what most people would consider "acceptable" or "intended" game play, that needs to be indicated somewhere on the server that anything goes. Because while you may see a difference between spam logging or placing items where they should not realistically be build-able, both look like "taking advantage of bugs in the code" to me. And yes, bug report is submitted to Facepunch.

While I don't necessarily agree with the tactics, and hate that we got robbed blind, I believe it's partially our fault for a few reasons:

    1. We didn't cap that stair tower. It at least would have increased the cost of this.
    2. We didn't bar the windows. Rookie mistake. :(

we don't even know if that's how they did it. I'm not going to start enforcing rules that aren't enforced by the game. It's not ideal, it's a flaw in the game design, something the developers missed. It's an alpha game there's likely going to be a lot of frustrating things that players will use that they "shouldn't" be able to.

I mean, it's a bunch of my shit that got stolen too, but I'm still pretty inclined to call that a learning opportunity. If it was a bit of clever maneuvering with a sleeping bag that exposed a weakness in the design, well, that's still a weakness. Personally, if it's doable in-game without any glitching or logging shenanigans, it's fair play in my book. Particularly since we're still in alpha and it'll be up to Facepunch to make the call on that being a bug or not.

What is the difference between logging in and out to break into a base and using a bug with a sleeping bag to do the same? One seems to be bannable and the other isn't.

It's definitely partially our fault. But it also stands that we sat there for multiple hours testing jumps, where foundations could be laid, etc. And then we got beat by people able to spawn onto a sleeping bag placed like a juggling plate at the circus.

It was 7 stories up or so, and clear of being able to be jumped into in any way shape or form. We ran out of bars, and thought we would be clear til we could craft more.

Like I said though, that shit needs to be billboarded somewhere in the game status messages or something for the server. Because I look at something like that and go "holy hell I would get banned for doing this, there's no way that is legit", where someone else goes "Hell yes, free stuff!" and here we are.

well two things come to mind.

    1. if I were playing the game and found i could cleverly manipulate sleeping bags or any other object to get somewhere i wouldn't be able to otherwise, I would not immediately think "Oh I shouldn't be doing this". I'd be excited that I found a creative method of burglary.
    2. There's no way to enforce the sleeping bag or other similar flaws. If I see someone logging out and back in a lot I'll teleport to them and see what they are up to. Maybe they are in the middle of a field and just having connection issues. But If I catch them on a cliff face trying to get somewhere they shouldn't be or worse, trying to get into someone's home then I ban them.

  • iamthepiemaniamthepieman Registered User regular
So I like to avoid interfering with players except where the alpha nature of the game has created a problem. This includes things like people getting stuck in crevasses, people losing items after a server crash, people misplacing a pillar and having no way to remove it and, after this discussion, I think placing sleeping bags on pillars.

I'll post it in the MOTD though I still won't be able to enforce it unless you catch someone in the act.

You obviously do not do much software development. =P I don't mean that as an insult, it's just the nature of how I think after years of programming. The stories I could tell about bug testing the mechlab we built for MWO.

"Hey I found a bug with the mechlab, if you manually edit the (completely hidden from the user) URL hash for the saved mech, you can add more weapons than you should be able to!"

Right, but I'm not writing the game, I'm just administering a server. Like my previous posts said though, as a server admin I do try to make up for the game's shortcomings as much as possible until the developers fix them.
