You obviously do not do much software development. =P I don't mean that as an insult, it's just the nature of how I think after years of programming. The stories I could tell about bug testing the mechlab we built for MWO.
"Hey I found a bug with the mechlab, if you manually edit the (completely hidden from the user) URL hash for the saved mech, you can add more weapons than you should be able to!"
"...why were you manually editing the URL hash?"
"Because I wanted to see what would happen."
Right, but I'm not writing the game, I'm just administering a server. Like my previous posts said though, as a server admin I do try to make up for the game's shortcomings as much as possible until the developers fix them.
Yeah, that's not really being debated debated. All I'm saying, is it needs to be communicated somewhere in game so people have a heads up. Not everyone considers trying to find possibly game breaking bugs a valid method of play. They should know exactly what they are up against when playing on the server. You can bet your ass I'm going to try to get creative as fuck now that I know exactly how far we can go without incurring the Wrath of God.

Yeah, let's not come down on Pie over it. He's doing all he can to be accommodating and responsive as an admin.
It's an exploit that fucked a bunch of us, but didn't really break any written (at the time) rules. Best time for that sort of thing to happen is during the alpha.

This sort of thing is one of the reasons for an alpha and yeah I can see why it's a gray area. That said if I'd discovered the sleeping bag trick I wouldn't clean anyone out with it, as tempting as it'd be. I'd leave a silly calling card or something, document the process and report it for the community to see. I understand the desire to keep it "secret" but with this many people banging on this game with rocks you can be sure that these kinds of exploits are going to spring up from multiple sources. The quicker these kinds of things get out there the quicker they can be judged and dealt with, either as exploits or refined into working, playable mechanics.

If only Rust had sinks, we could be the Wet Bandits!

I'm currently logged out like a bag lady, all my worldly possessions stuffed into pockets. I might submit a request to facepunch for shopping trolleys so we can push stuff around in them.
Ain't no one getting their hands on my explosives.
Normal ping to US servers is 250-300. I'm used to it when it comes to MP FPSs, but Rust really isn't the kind of game that demands precision timing anyway.
I will probs jump on anyway just for the fun of it
I find the lag to be real frustrating on Rust though. Trying to shoot things with everything apart from the shotgun (even that kinda sucks with all the rubber banding) becomes real hard to do
Myself and some others are having a good time on Sliver's server.
We've become probably the biggest group there, there are about 12-13 of us in total although rarely are we all on at once.
Anyways, we've taken to calling ourselves the Hobos, partly because my steam name is Trevor the Singing Hobo, and partly because when we started playing we lived in a little shanty town like hobos and all slept in one big pile for warmth (ya that's the ticket!).
Yesterday we built a structure we call the "Hobo-dome". It's a fighting pit. An arena, with two antechambers. Each room contains a large storage crate. In the crate is a sleeping bag and a weapon. Each combatant places their items in the storage crate, and places the sleeping bag on the floor. When the time is right: TWO MEN ENTER - ONE MAN LEAVES.
The arena is small, 2 squares by 2 squares. It contains obstacles and cover. In the middle is a crate with the prizes: Metal shards, water bottles, food, and sometimes more.
Winner takes all. The loser can respawn at the sleeping bag he placed in order to retrieve his items.
Hopefully we have the first Hobo-games tonight. If you have a character on Sliver's server, come join us tonight. If you don't have a character here, winning a match might get you some good starting materials.
The fights will be between two naked men. The weapons will either be stones, hatchets, or sometimes low quality guns (with a limited number of bullets!)
Hey @Dissociater, some friends and I are on Sliver's server too. I'm Robotic Sumbitch on Steam. We don't have much to offer, but just thought I'd let you know we're out there.
Cool I'll keep an eye out for you.
We raided the heck out of S.ST last night, that was a good time.

Thank you to Kidlieth (I know I spelt that wrong, sorry) and CorriganX for giving me a good start after spawning naked in the PA base with all my stuff gone (robbery!) and all the locks changed. Had to suicide out. Also double thank you to them for saving my stuff when a seemingly invincible red zombie killed me (5 revolvers shots and an up close pipe shotgun blast didn't bring him down).

No sleeping bags were used to raid your base, we actually were not even aware that was possible. You have a much bigger and obvious weakness, that we took advantage of, and then we destroyed the evidence of how we did it. We also recorded the process because we found it hilarious. Pie will get to see the video, but no one else, at least until we decide we are done using it, or you fix it.

Hah, oh man I really want to know now! You're killin' me smalls!
Although saying you destroyed the evidence should give a big hint, since that immediately eliminates anything involving new foundations, pillars, or ceilings.
I'll throw in my 2 cents about the sleeping bag on pillar situation, although it basically echoes piemans view.
The biggest issue with coming up with any sort of custom ruleset for a server is that it needs to be backed up with proper tracking to be enforced effectively (The even better fix is to make the game enforce your rules for you). Unfortunately rust has none of that whatsoever and so when you have rules that can only be enforced by actively observing the rulebreaker it becomes nearly impossible to enforce. Luckily with the sleeping bag trick it can be identified after the fact by the absence of any other method to get into a base but even then its impossible to know who did it and if they knew it was against the rules the players just would never take credit for it.
Its a shitty situation, but until better admin tools/mods are developed there is only so much that can be done. I learned running a minecraft server that there will always be players that try to bend or break the rules, and until you can make the game itself enforce them it is extraordinarily difficult to find or catch those players.
I believe Pie is going to make a video to show you how we did it (since I explained it to him). And the video will be our proof we did nothing shady.
Since you guys have barred the windows, you have sealed the flaw that cost you everything we took. So I will explain our process here for you
1. We drop a large crate and wooden barricade at the base of the stairs so we can jump onto the stair platform.
2. We put another set down at the top under the ceiling (hanging out) so we can jump on top of the ceiling that you placed.
3. We put a third set down on top of the ceiling (hanging off of course) so we could make the jump on top of your building.
4. We crouch and slowly edge backwards until we start to fall, as we fall we are pushing forward again so we land inside your window.
5. Bacon and I made the jumps inside the building while the rest waited outside, we grabbed all your stuff and tossed it out the window to them (the video he has shows this)
6. When done, we destroy all the crates and barricades leaving you to wonder how ninjas invaded your place.
Was a really fun raid!

Alright, I have to admit, that is pretty hilarious. Very clever.
So I was actually in the process of testing this out when HydroP logged on and told me all about it. I had two theories, one involved a small amount of C4 and the potential security of your stairwell. The other involved exactly the process Hydro described.
Was falling damage being off a part of the break in? :P
And kudos to you guys I still say we are better becase you scum are around

Well, that deserves a congratulations. That's pretty great and exactly the sort of crazy bullshit that raiding should involve, rather than just brute forcing with dozens of C4.

While fall damage may be off, you can still break your legs. One of the neat little tricks we learned is that the metal sides of the building will actually catch you a little and slow your descent keeping you from hurting yourself. (we didn't know fall damage was off)
It probably took about 20 minutes to finally get into your base after quite a bit of trial and error, from there it was obviously very simple.

I could swear I've taken falling damage without getting the crippled effect. Is falling damage actually off?
Well the door codes were changed as a precaution last night. Who will be around tonight to disseminate the new code? I won't be on until late to do it.

There is a fall height that is far enough to take damage, but not far enough to get crippled, I'm fairly sure. It's happened to me a handful of times while traversing rocks.

So, had a couple of rough days in Rust. We lost our base and materials the day we were going to build a new, metal base. We rebuilt somewhere else, lost it, rebuilt somewhere else, lost it. At some point in this I made the mistake of being friendly to a guy who appeared to be new by his cobbled together armor, but who shot me and stole all my gear the first chance he got. In retrospect, my fault for trusting someone, but I do wish the game didn't make it necessary to at *best* turn away anyone who asks for help, since they may (as this guy was) just be pretending to be in need and friendly. But, eh, such is life in Rust.
I was checking out the Rust Trello and saw this plan for reworking research. It concerns me, as someone who doesn't have a ton of time to play, and doesn't play with a big group. Instead of needing to find an item worth learning, and then hold on to it long enough to find a research kit (or vice versa) without losing it to raiders when I'm at work, I will have to find 3+ of said item and research kits. And in the meantime I'll be holding on to partial blueprints that are of great worth, meaning there's even more reason to raid everyone's houses and see if they have partial BPs stored.
I hope Facepunch is successful in adding more defensive options. I think that research change is going to further widen the gap between the haves (large gangs/lots of time) and the have-nots, and make it harder for the latter to gain any progress. Learned recipes are the only thing that I can't lose in a raid :-(
