So i finally got to a computer that actually lets me copy and paste, so let me link what im planning on buying next week.

Asus P5B ATX LGA775 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Processor
EVGA Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB Videocard
OCZ Platinum PC2-6400 DDR2-800 2GB 2x1GB Dual channel Ram
Antec Sonata II Black Case
Seagate Barracuda 320GB HD SATA2

Windows Vista 64Bit Home Edition Premium.

I know i left out a few things like network card, drives and sound card, but i plan on salvaging some of those parts from my old computer or something like that.

Anyone have any suggestions or see any compatability issues i might run into? I hear the PSU in the Antec isnt that great, but we'll see. I'm also looking for a decent fan for the intel, but im not sure what size i need.

Thanks.

Well, as noted in some other recent threads both intel cpu's and DX10 video cards are in for some price drops soon so you might want to hold off.

As for your choices, at this point Intel is still the price/performance leader and the power supply that comes with the sonata case gets low scores for reliability. Finally, I am obligated to point you to the Twice and Future Computer Thread.

so yea, chop chop, and if you could www.ncix.com for links i would be most pleased.

In that case you'd better linkify your list. Otherwise you are asking for convience while not bothering yourself.

i would post links but im using a pay terminal on an army base and it really doesnt have the functionality to create a list of links in a reasonable amount of time.

any idea how long until DX10 cards take a price drop? im an impatient man.

I like AMD.....however, I cannot justify buying any AMD processor right now, not when Intel soundly bends AMD over and destroys it with the Core 2 Duo. It's just not worth it.

We built Talon a rig a little while back. If you go through the thread, you'll see various pros and cons on certain components and stuff.

I build my new computer about a month ago and so far it is running great. Looking at selling it to a friend who lacks the technical know-how to build his own and invest in another one myself in a few months. The one I just finished is

Case - Antec LifeStyle SONATA II
    Motherboard - Asus P5B Deluxe/Wifi-AP
    Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
Graphics Card - BFG Tech GeForce 7600 GT 256MB
    Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar SE16 250Gig 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
    RAM - Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400

At the time I ordered it, this was just over 1000 dollars. Currently, it would cost you 900 dollars for the same parts, and the RAM, case, and graphics cards all have 30 dollar rebates on them so a grand total of about 825-850 after shipping.

If I raised budget from 1000 to 1750, I would upgrade the Processor to a 6600 and the Graphics Card to an 8800, and possibly change the case from the SONATA II to the Performance One P180B

I don't know. I'm not going to build another computer for a while since I want to use the most out of this socket 939 system. But I'm still going to wait and see what AMD does with K8L/K9. They've beaten Intel before, they might do it again.

But I digress. That's in the future, and we're talking about now.

It's been so long since I've posted here, I've removed my signature since most of what I had here were broken links. Shows over, you can carry on to the next post.

So is it even worth it to invest in a dx10 card within the next couple months? theres a few newer games out i really wanna try as well, like medievil total war 2, stalker, et:qw, and some others.

every build i make ends up coming closer and closer to breaking my 2k budget, especially if i go 6600 dualcore.
