Showdown really isn’t Smash Bros aside from being able to fall down pits or into lava on some of the stages. For one, it’s health based; pushing the opponent is secondary. Also, there’s a party instead of a shield, not everyone can jump good, there’s no consistent number of moves across characters... it’s very much its own thing.
2d arena platforming multiplayer brawler is a copy of 2d arena platforming multiplayer brawler.
But like.
To me, that’s ignoring everything that’s distinctive about Smash aside from being able to jump on stuff and being 2D. The way I see it, the option/goal of knocking people out of the arena, and the mechanic where your launching power increases as damage is accumulated are essential to Smash’s particular flavor. Even in modes like Stamina or Coin Battle, those exist at the game’s core.
Elements such as that are what separates Showdown from something like Rivals of Aether or Slap City, to me.

They copy smash brothers for Showdown and they can’t copy Gwent or Hearthstone for this bullshit and make it fun?
I mean, they copied Triple Triad and made it pretty dang good in my modest card gamer's opinion.
I like it, feel like they probably should have made the AI a lil dumber though.
Gwent was a very comfortable card game and for me, probably ranks as the best card battle minigame dethroning Triple Triad. Never felt too frustrating or really having to wrack your brain during a match.
The NPCs you fight in King of Cards really feel like they're out for blood which I don't think does a good job of encouraging people of playing more early on along with the card losing mechanic.
My big issues with the card game is that it very much feels like the type of game that is won or lost in the first few moves. I've got no clue what I should be doing for the first 2 or 3 moves. After that, yeah it's easy enough to plan ahead, and often by that point its... I'm fucked... I'm fucked... yup I'm fucked. Add onto that it's a card game with a random draw. So did I lose because I made the wrong first move that cascaded, or did I draw the absolute wrong cards and I was doomed before the game even started? It doesn't feel clear, and it doesn't feel good. And it kind of feels scummy to use the cheats... but it does feel totally in line with something King Knight would do, so I won't feel too bad about it.

I've heard that it's actually possible to clear the game without playing Joustus at all (when you reach a House of Joustus level, just, like... leave), which is even more in keeping with King Knight's character.

To follow up on this: evidently this isn't quite so simple as just walking away; to get out of the first House of Joustus without playing Joustus requires a bit of movement tech and/or exploration in order to find an alternative level exit trigger. For all the others, you have to play at least one Joustus game to make the exit appear, but there are routes around them on the world map. So as long as you never enter a House of Joustus level, you won't be forced to play it.

so it's more like, it's possible to clear the game without winning a game of joustus, then.

Having finished King of Cards, the tier list for me is looking like:
1: King of Cards
2: Shovel of Hope
3: Plague of Shadows
4: Something something Specter Knight
5: Showdown (I might hate this much to my surprise).
Its very hard to go back to playing as the other knights after King Knight's campaign, I particularly feel really gimped with Shovel Knight's tiny shovel attack and nowhere near glorious armor. He was my favorite character before but now thats only got stronger, I love this horrible asshole and I'm addicted to his shoulder tackle/spin combo. The way they broke up levels up into bite sized but still decent length stages with branching paths felt sooo right. They need to bring this back for the inevitable sequel, I can't help but feel like the way levels were handled before made them feel a lil bloated now in retrospect.
Plague Knight is another character that just felt really good to control. Like King Knight, his means of attacks and vigor moves are much more fun to utilize than Shovel Knight's. And like Shovel Knight and Shield Knight, Mona's relationship with Plague is pretty damn cute. This one has the second best story after Shovel Knight's.
Specter Knight...well, this one was just a huge disappointment for me despite being many peoples' favorite. I was expecting a lot more than what we got from this one. Specter Knight is supposed to be a flying phantom with tremendous reach and in his campaign, it feels they took away a lot of what made him interesting to make him fit more into the basic Shovel Knight mold. This should have been the most unique and different campaign, don't feel like they did the character justice at all as a playable character. Also was not a fan of the story, especially making the anime ninja boy fan insert an actual part of the Shovel Knight lore. Of the various fan characters, Reize is easily the worst. For the most part, I actually like the others.
Overall, an amazing package. Yacht Club outdid themselves and went far beyond the call of duty. Can't wait for their next project and the Dig spin off.

No, you can turn right around and leave any Joustus house anytime you want. The confusion comes because you're required to enter the very first house as part of the game, and if you're playing for the first time then your natural curiosity is to explore the level. So you probably won't initially notice the exit ring literally to your left as you drop in. Every other house on the map is optional to enter, but you can also always leave without playing anybody.

I low-key am kind of disappointed that...
the Order of No-Quarter is just a bunch of loveable dorks and not actually, like... evil people.
IDK, i kinda hoped that King Knight would be a dick but, uh..... he's just really stupid and manages to have a super wholesome adventure.
We kinda knew that the order wasn’t totally evil back when Shovel came out. The ending had most of them doing something nice, or at least leaving folks alone after the tower crumbled. Treasure Knight and King Knight being big exceptions.

So we're all agreed its going to be pretty weird if Mole Knight doesn't show up in Dig, right?
Really enjoying King Knight, as I expected I would. Like others have said, the smaller levels with multiple exits really suits the gameplay. I'm going to wait till I finish King to rank all the different campaigns though. I'm also trying to not blow through the entire game in a few days since it is prob the last Shovel Knight we will get for some time.
The graphics of King Knight are really shining to me. I get that there is a lot of reused assets, but when the ring pulls you up at the end of the levels and you see the background paralax scrolling, with beaustiful color and design, it really hits me. And it's only a short sequence, but the effort and skill on display is really something special.
I just wish there was some sort of visual indicator when you can dash again. If you dash->hit->spin off a wall or enemy, you can't dash again unless you spin jump off an enemy. I've sometimes have made the boneheaded mistake of dashing into an enemy and then trying to dash again. I've also made the mistake of dashing in midair without hitting something, thinking that'll magically put me into the spin. It's nothing so much that I'd blame the controls, I just haven't quite got the knack of fully mastering his movement.

I was thinking about that myself. Something like... have him do front-flips after landing the shoulder bash, then go into the spin (from which you can shoulder-bash again) after landing on something.

Have you finished King Knight's campaign yet?
Hes a huge dick and one of the worst knights.
I love him for it but still.
I mean, I haven't finished it, but King Knight is already kind of a humongous asshole. The hilarious thing is precisely that he's the one that has EVERY reason not to be.
Like. Specter Knight? Dude got stabbed by a friend, forced into a faustian bargain, is basically dead. Him being bitter makes sense, and even then, he actually still has a visible moral compass, it's just kind of rusted over by all the shower of bullshit.
Plague Knight? Half of everything bad he does, he does under the mistaken belief it is necessary to win him love and friends. The moment he realizes that he already HAD love and friends, he turns.
Even Shovel Knight would have plenty of reason to feel bitter, with his best friend dead and people after his head, and it's a testament to him being A Hero(tm) that he's, well, not.
But King Knight? King Knight has a loving family, a ton of people wanting to cheer him on, help, friends, willing mentors trying to teach him everything he'd need to be an actual king... He has everything. But he's too much of a petulant little shithead to appreciate it or notice it.
King knight is a huge self-centered asshole, sure, but he's charismatic enough to get followers and dumb enough to be endearing.
That's the thing, he's not actually charismatic, it's all sheer luck. Everyone misunderstands what he means, assumes things, or events shake out in such a way that people think King Knight is doing a good thing. People often ignore everything he says!
Basically, King Knight is an enormous dick to everyone, from his mom to his crew. It's just nobody actually either notices he's being a dick to them, or someone comes in and convinces them otherwise.

The Biggest Monster is in fact Shovel Knight. He murders HUNDREDS of poor defenseless animals and steals their money just so he can buy some shiny new trinkets.

It's wild to be playing what is effectively a brand new 3DS game at the end of 2019. Also, this seems really hard. I don't remember having this much trouble with other characters? Maybe I'm just out of practice with the circle pad.

Okay so for anyone looking to get the fearless champ feat, my advice is to play though the entire game without touching joustus until you have opened all the joustus houses. By then you should be able to go back and take care of it no problem.
Spoilers end game:
Wow the story turns dark at the end.
That last boss was really rough. 10 deaths before I managed to beat it. Really liked the game, little scared to try and NG+ it. Nice that we don't have to break all those happy check points.

Also I don't know how far you are, but a lot of items/abilities alievated the toughness on the second half. One of the items lets you "bubble" like in NSMB and it really helps to be able to take pause during tricks platforms.
I'm enjoying Jotus more now, though I still don't get how to win those one move solution puzzles yet.

A couple of things that will help with Joustus puzzles. First, you don’t need to always fill every space; if you can wrangle a situation where no valid moves exist, and you have the most gems, that works. Second, you don’t always need to grab a gem on your one turn; forcing the opponent to push one of your cards onto a gem works.

What’s neat is that with the context of KOC, his ending in SOH is really fitting.
By the time the game is over, he’s not only lost his usurped throne, but he no longer has his airship of followers (betrayed), his Joustus title (he ordered the game destroyed), his house (converted into a village for the people he betrayed), or the love of his mother.
The dude was so focused on getting a crown that he lost everything he had.
So, in Showdown, Phantom Striker has a move where he puts on his cape after a teleport.
Does this move... do anything? Far as I can tell, it has no hitbox or extra effect or anything. The teleport itself is an attack, so I don’t see the point of this thing.

I was good at triple triad though. At least until that random rule got loose. Then I lost and lost interest.
Also Good lord there are a ton of feats for showdown. Feeling like I won't be able to recover 100% on this game.
