They had a blog about the 1.0 feature goals recently: http://blog.chucklefish.org/?p=91

They're aiming for the end of the year.

I completely forgot about this game. Is there a release date yet?

They're aiming to have 1.0 out by "the end of the year or early next year" which I read as "probably around June 2015". This next update is not 1.0, so presumably the rough release date is some point between now and December... which isn't awfully helpful but I'd rather the devs remain vague until they're absolutely sure then have them say "by the end of October" and have us still waiting by Christmas.

With any luck they've also grown as a dev team to the point they can actually halfway manage a decently accurate release estimate. Damn rough start they've had, likely mostly because of the massive hype train that started once the internet caught wind of them.

It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

Last I heard about this game was that most of the developers had moved on to other projects, basically leaving this to rot. I wonder how true that was, and what may have changed. It was certainly very easy to believe, considering the state of the game.

Not entirely true but Chucklefish did have a "buy all the indie devs" phase a few months back.

I was surprised when I saw the Chucklefish name show up in Risk of Rain, which I thought was pretty much made entirely made by two guys in Gamemaker Studio.

I guess sometimes Indie devs need an indie publisher.

It sort of makes sense. Two guys making games in Gamemaker Studio don't want to be tied to EA or whoever, and chucklefish already has all the industry contacts they need to get games published on steam and the psn.

Well it turned out to be a pretty successful endeavour, so. mission complete I suppose!

I'm pretty sure indie publisher is literally a contradiction in terms.
Like, if you have a publisher aren't you by definition no longer indie?

  • WyvernWyvern Registered User regular
    edited September 2014
Technically yes, but the cultural distinction between high-budget and low-budget game development has become very significant, and a working definition of "indie" that includes Bastion and Risk of Rain is more conversationally useful than a definition which excludes them but includes Team Fortress 2.

Well that's a grey area; typically "publishing" would mean "selling boxed copies in a store", but what if you're publishing your game by putting it on steam or selling it on a website? That takes significantly less resources, but does that mean Chucklefish is still a publisher?

Publisher also take over the job of marketing and PR, liaising with digital storefronts, etc. Indie publishers are a good thing and something we need more of, imho.

Anyone play the Nightly build? I was planning to come back to this game, thought I'd do that build to play with the latest stuff, but I can't start it.

Did all the things you need to, clear/rename the Universe and player folders, delete the .config file so it makes a new one, but the game closes itself on the loading screen, there isn't even an error in the .log file.

Yup, which, I am told, does not actually remove the files that normally cause problems, hence the need to go in and delete the mentioned files manually.

The way it just closes after it finishes loading makes me think there is some file that was altered earlier in the nightly builds so it would run, but isn't loaded as a part of today's build. There is at least on other person on the official forums with the same problem, who also decided to try the nightly build today.

  • cB557cB557 voOOP Registered User regular
Yeah, might just be a bug in the latest nightly build.

  • Mr RayMr Ray Sarcasm sphereRegistered User regular
Yeah, sometimes the nightlies just don't work at all. From reading the dev blog they're finally starting to work on progression (i.e, making sure things actually work from end to end), which means there might be a playable game here soon. According to the dev blog they're aiming for a new stable release before the end of the year, so we should have a playable nightly build before that.

In the most recent nightly I was able to build it was obvious they've already changed a lot; you don't start with the ability to go to other planets anymore, you start with a broken ship which you have to fix with "core fragments" from the planet's actual core. Except the core fragments wouldn't appear in my inventory when I collected them so I was basically stuck on the first planet.

  • ZekZek Registered User regular
I'm looking forward to playing it again but definitely waiting for 1.0. The progression stuff is important for your first time through, you can't really go back to do that again.

Yeah, I read up on it and found out you need to use admin commands to get pretty much anywhere in the nightly build right now.

You need to delete your starbound.config for each new version. Also your character and world files for the newer ones.

Yeah, I'd assumed that the nightlies were just broken, but it seems that if you delete starbound.config, the "player" folder and the "universe" folder it will launch fine. However, its still a little screwy. Stone tools seem to be missing, for example, which is a problem given that the only axe that actually cuts trees is the stone one.

Kinda surprised it hasn't already come up, but I'm gonna go ahead and say Starbound. Their initial release got rushed out to keep from missing yet another self-imposed deadline, and they've since spend nearly an entire year reworking the game from the ground up to try and fix it. Hopefully they get a new stable release out before too long, would be nice to see if it lives up to the dream once it's actually had time to get done right.
I just started checking out the nightlies, and having gone through a portal generated by a stone arch covered in cthuloid imagery on an asteroid, and been... hang on, it's something you have to see for yourself.
    9oh00wny72of.png
The portal in question. Went through, came out of a similar portal on the other side. Was very worried about what I might run into.

Alright, artificial lighting, and in a form fairly familiar. I might be okay. But, then again, it's not like in the stable versions NPCs have been happy to see you very often. Gotta keep my guard up, look out for any...

Anyway, so yeah. The core of the game is solid, and I've been having fun going back to the stable builds of Starbound every once in a while, but when they built up all that suspense for me and then turned it on its head like that, I my excitement for what the final release was gonna be like was pretty much rekindled. I'm far from saying that Starbound has failed.

That's good to hear! I've been following their blog and all the stuff they've been working on sounds awesome to me, but it's nice to hear from someone that's not a dev about how the nightlies are turning out. I'm still excited for the game's next big update, and I understand why they're waiting to release it and I'm okay with it. I just want it out sooooon

Yep, still needs a little more time in the oven, but its obvious that the devs haven't been sat twiddling their thumbs this whole time, as some people seem to believe.

In the update I took those screenshots in, nothing, but now they've gotten some of the shops at that place working (There's a larger structure just to the right), and Infinity Express sells stuff like med kits, rope, and some snack food, and the other store, Terramart, sells a bunch of other food.

    ElvenshaeErin The Red
  • Mr RayMr Ray Sarcasm sphereRegistered User regular
I believe Terramart also sells seeds, and will buy your crops and food items off you. The new progression system is going to be limited by physical hazards rather than arbitrarily dividing systems into sectors, so for example the first objective is to get core fragments from the planet's core, then you might have to get something from an Ice planet which would need some way of generating heat, then maybe you need something from an Ocean planet so you need an oxygen tank e.t.c. But all of these recipes are going to take a lot of pixels (as they do now), and the idea is that if you want to earn pixels by growing crops and selling the resulting food products at Terramart to save yourself some grinding, you can totally do that.
