Can you craft everything in this game regardless of mode?
in Terraria, you have to be in hardcore mode to craft all the good stuff. Does the same hold true for this game?
...What can't you craft outside of Hardcore mode? I think you're referring to Hardmode which, in Terraria, is not a selected difficulty but a thing which happens to the world during the game.

right now, I have a nights edge (the one from 4 swords together) and a full set of crimtane armor so I guess I'm almost ready to fight the wall
I'd like to finish up my tools (which will take all of 10 minutes)
Will my house stay intact?
Probably. Starting hard mode causes two new biomes to spawn. Your house might get boned if one of them spawns on top of it (or if the biome spawning breaks shadow orbs and drops a meteor on your house...), but other than that you should be ok.

Some people like to build a house in the air for extra safety upon triggering hardmode. On a server a bunch of us played on when 1.10 came out, we were forced to when our original base of operations was right in the middle of one of the biomes.

So Starbound got updated to Spirited Giraffe.
I started it up and a bunny was hopping around my ship. It doesn't like carrots, but likes wartweed and bananas. It costs a lot less to craft stuff via 3D printing, and there's a teleportation mechanic that I haven't tried out yet, but I've found pods in green high tech chests on planets already (some high tech chests still have blank tech cards).
Also that thing where if you log off on a planet and then log back in you end up back in your ship? I guess that was a bug which has been fixed, so now I guess I can't just go jumping down holes in caves on planets for mining without an escape route planned or marked and then log out when I feel like leaving.
Biggest new thing is the ability to start colonies. Build a home, place a colony deed in the home, and attract an NPC based on the furniture and building materials you used.
Also increased the density of interesting things on worlds, started (another) rebalancing of weapons and combat, new better AI for monsters and NPCs, and more.

It almost makes me want to crank stuff back up for us(I recently updated the server but noone was kicking my door down to play when it was out of date. I actually had a few requests to swap it to terraria.)
We could have different bazzar worlds. Because apparently placing x/y/z gets you one vendor, but x/y/w gets you a different kind of vendor. Kind of a neat setup for MP servers. Combat balancing again? I feel like that ate 12 months of their time already. I would say its better now overall, but yikes.
Wohoo update! I saw a preview video the other day, but didn't believe it would release in a timely manor. Thanks for making me a liar Starbound Devs! Happy to be one in cases like these.
While it was a shame to lose my old save, the new update and the fact haven't played this game in like months, it's all been improved. Tutorials are better and like the new quests.
Was also great to find a smart shotgun on my first startup.
So colonies work similar to terraia? If you build it they come?
You build a room with at least one door and light, and place a "colony deed" on the wall (bought at the outpost), and an NPC will appear to live there and occasionally give you stuff (sometimes money, sometimes not).
The NPC that appears is based on what furniture is in the room, and rearranging it supposedly changes their appearance but is the same npc.
I'm really liking this new update. I didn't get around to playing with the last update much so lots of it and all of this one is new to me. The combat feels really improved and I'm liking the additions to biomes and microdungeons and stuff.
I updated the server, and it seems really stable. I get occasional lag moments but that might be me.
thomastasks.org Works for connecting to the server again. I'll get to work tomorrowish on setting up a password and other stuff.
Discord seems really neat, I set up a starbound VOIP channel in it for us: https://discord.gg/0TFS13naIkYNMPFp
(If you like it, get the app, use PTT and don't be a monster)

But... I play a Hylotl. I'm a monster by default.

So, I'm in the Party Time mission, and I died during the bossfight, and it won't let me back in. The second barred door you need to get past won't open and I don't know how to get past it now, so I can't continue and I can't go back unless I die. Is there something obvious I'm missing here?

Well, got all but the last ship upgrade, I think I'll start working on a colony.
Man though, they still haven't fixed how it takes so damn long to get any appreciable amount of blocks to build with. I think for now I'm just gonna use Starcheat to load up on a ton of whatever I wanna build with instead of grinding for pixels so I can just skip right to the fun building.
I wasn't going to dig up the thread, but since someone else posted:
Server News
I bought a new, better(TM) VPS for our server. It works, I havent noticed much lag but I also havent stress tested it. I also think its in canada instead of.... PA or NY like the last one. So that's a thing and it will be up soon.
Its got double the processors, and more importantly, double the ram. I just have to point the server URL to it. Do we want the universe ported over, or start from scratch?
I'm not going to be playing on it so don't take my suggestion seriously, but I'd say start from scratch. They got new planet types y'all might want to explore! Unless the current universe might somehow spawn them, but I don't know how that works.
It wouldn't if its the same tech as before, the universe seed is the same for everyone still. If theres a new planet type, they would need to reseed. Sounds like we would jump to a new universe. I gotta check a few things first, and make sure everyone gets stuff out of planet containers.

I thought I'd go tear up a flesh biome in lieu of tentacle planets but...they took those out too, didn't they? Do they even exist in Upbeat Giraffe?
They exist. I forget what planet type they're on though. Desert? Arid?
starbound generates different universes depending on what kind of OS you have
fuck if I know why
I'm running 64 bit 14.04, so gimme those coordinates!
EDIT: I kid, I don't need the coordinates.
What is a good way to start? What is something decent to work towards that should (hopefully) fuel further gameplay?
Make new armor and weapons from crafting.
Keep digging until you reach the planet core

Pretty sure every mode lets you make everything. Difficulty really just changes death penalty I think?

oh damn, really?
I thought they were interchangeable terms!
you still have a whole bunch of game left
god like, 60%?
So you know, hard mode will start on it's own as soon as you kill:
Starting hard mode changes the dungeon so make sure to complete it once before you trigger hard mode.
I'd like to finish up my tools (which will take all of 10 minutes)
Will my house stay intact?

Are there any goals after the penguin mechanism fight?
Is there a bug that limits the randomness to worlds? I seem to have mostly avian towers and the same mobs on every planet.
