Why don't you have attack powerups in Gran Turismo or fast travel in Dark Souls

That would make those games so much better

But yeah, there's nothing separating 2D action games from 3D action games other than the perspective, and it works fine in 3D action games, and would work equally fine in 2D ones

You do have fast travel in dark souls...

I can't imagine a person wanting regenerating health in a 2d platorming action game. I mean, part of the fun of said games is avoiding damage until you can get to the next health kit or whatever. Can you imagine playing a classicvania and your health just regenerated if you stood there? It's okay to have video games that let you fail.

So I see that Tomb Raider is on Amazon for $39.99 today only. Is it worth picking up at that price?

I thought Costco had a good deal on the One, but apparently it's $580 for a box, an extra controller and a year of live, which.... Not much of a bargain.

What is this I don't even.

I have no idea if this game is worth it at this price, but I will most likely jump on it if it drops to $39.99 digitally. Today we've got Rayman Legends and Ryse at $39.99 each in the Xbox Games Store. Ryse is excellent and Rayman Legends has some great reviews.

The next kit is generally farming bats or whatever for health, isn't it? That doesn't seem enormously different.

I almost wonder if I could call Amazon and get them to price match or do something for that, as I've had it less than 30 days. I know they can be pretty generous with their price matching. I need to set up a return anyways.

It depends on the game I suppose. In a classicvania for example, you don't get healed until you complete a stage or find some meat hidden in the rocks or whatever. IMO in games that are designed to have you not be hit at all, regenerating health just means you'd be standing around a lot instead of playing the game. Just don't get hit.

In a Metroidvania like symphony of the night, you get healed when you hit a save point and you'll also pick up collectible health food items that are generally better utilized during a hard boss fight if you need them.

IMO regenerating health is only good in a game where you're designed to be getting hit pretty frequently, like a 3rd person shooter where not dying just means not getting hit too many times in a short window. In 2d side scrollers or whatever, dying means getting hit X times period, not just in a short time frame, and the design is such that you shouldn't be getting hit at all ideally. I just don't see a good reason you'd ever have regenerating health in that design.

Again though he wasn't saying it should have regenerating health, he was saying, at least to my understanding, that in games like strider with no regenerating health, bad health pack placement can seriously screw up pacing and difficulty to the point where the game is inconsistent and frustrating. If the next halo had a shield that took too long at random times to regenerate you'd make a similar complaint. The phrasing of mentioning the health system as an alternative to "regenerating health" isn't because he wants or expects it, but because regenerating is a common enough standard in video games now that it warrants mentioning that this game doesn't have it. You could say this is doom and gloom for society and the youngins these days, and exclaim that of course this game doesn't have regenerating health it's a 2d platformer, when the reality is most people aren't going to automatically make that assumption. You've just got a communication and reference issue here, not one actually about regenerating health

Also the xbox one store is increasingly behaving more and more amateurishly. Rayman legends was available in the aus store yesterday for purchase, now it's gone, as well as any searchable mention of the game. They need to bring back the old system of each game having a "page", even if it wasn't out. They should also have pre-loading like steam and various other things to do on these pages, given how big some download files are. Like if they had gone all digital with the console the way they originally planned, this kind of stuff would have been even worse. It would be much neater than various videos and ads floating and disappearing at the whim of whoever is running the store, like as it stands nothing feels permanent or safe in the store, it's really garbage

Regenerating health in a 2D platformer:

X-Men on the Mega Drive, Wolverine. It can work.

Mind you, that game ripped up every rule in the book. A classic years ahead of it's time, pretty much lost to history it seems.

I can confirm that Target is offering a $50 gift card with the purchase of an Xbox One. Assuming you were going to buy a game with it anyway, that's 10% off which is the best deal I've seen so far.

No error. It goes to the loading screen and then just hangs on a black screen for a long time. I tried resetting it, even hard reset and no luck. Worked just fine in all my other players.

haha wtf, mine loads the tree image and then nothing! This happened with Avengers too, eventually it worked, but for fucks sake Microsoft, your bluray player has trouble playing blurays...

looking around and it seems to be a common issue. God damnit. Apparently microsoft are aware of the issue and are working with the developer of the bluray to patch a fix. Wtf.

Yeah...I kept it there for 20 minutes and nothing changed. I was hoping it'd eventually play because I didn't want to change out my optical audio cable. Oh well.

I love my xbox, but the whole one stop media centre thing is kind of hilarious when Ive had 2 issues out of the 3 brand new and recently released blurays I've bought.

Though reading around and it seems a fair few other bluray players are having problems with season 3, so it looks like the developers of the bluray tried something fancy and it backfired

Apparently it works on ps3, but not ps4. So it must be some issue with newer bluray players. The more complex and advanced technology gets, the more ways there is to balls it up I suppose. Ah well I got the 3 season bluray boxset, and 1 and 2 work, so I'll watch them in the meantime

Also yay Rayman Legends! And soon Strider! And then plants v zombies!

Also also if you were on the fence about Ryse its shaving 20 dollars off its price soon digitally (I think starting tomorrow), going to 39.99. I really recommend it at that price if you like overthetop Roman stuff and junk, I actually really enjoyed the game and was thoroughly satisfied with it. Just dont play it on recruit difficulty, bump up the difficulty as the combat system is quite rewarding and fun if you have enough of a challenge to learn its ins and outs properly. But dont get it expecting a deep brawler, just a fun and pretty as hell romp through a really well done and tonally consistent exaggerated Rome.

So, a cable channel that's normally full screen is smaller than full screen going through the xbox. Not every channel, but some of them. What's up with that?

Edit: This thing suuuucks at interpreting voice commands, at least for watching tv.

What is it with Ubisoft and achievements? Both rayman legends and assassins creed 4 just have the same image for every achievement. Is it because they want you to focus on their stupid UPlay thing? It looks so cheap, I mean it can't be a laziness thing it has to be a conscious decision someone's made, because at least just make higher res versions of the symbols from last gen, as these are both last gen titles. With all the amazing art in rayman it's such a waste to have 50 big tiles just repeating the same image.

The world is so confusing and frustratingly dumb in the weirdest ways.

The first thing you need to understand about the games industry is that it will never make any goddamn sense.

There will always be obvious and seemingly-easy stuff that just gets overlooked or postponed into oblivion.

Every game you love is someone giving up before they were finished because dammit they need to move on with their lives.
