Oh man, just when I killed about half the EX Elite Monsters, got to level 100, and finally get to go to the EX Dungeon, I go "oh hey, the first boss I fight isn't so bad. Maybe they were wrong." Next boss fight? GIANT KICK IN THE BALLS. So I get leveled, get around 105, beat the next boss, okay, easy; not too difficult. Next boss, only 10 levels lower. GIANT KICK IN THE BALLS ONCE MORE.
THIS GAME. Iike the last boss apparently had a fucking ability to CONFUSE EVERYONE even though he had no actual ATTACK that triggered it. Stupid dungeon and stupid bosses and stupid confusion. I only hope the next boss won't be as aggravating (OH BUT IT TOTALLY WILL).
Doing some of the character stories pre-Chapter 15, and they *finally* acknowledge how weird it is that DODA peeps call with "Hey, another fractured dimension!" every time the group stops to have a personal conversation. I was wondering if that would ever get acknowledged.
I hit like 86 last night and thought i was almost done.
Tales games never stop at 99 or 100.
Sometimes it's like 250.
Xillia 1 stopped at 99, actually. But it was the outlier.
Did it really?
Huh. How did the post game stuff work out then?
Post game was a big middle finger because the boss was basically a guy who mimicked your party members but every time you lowered his HP he would split into newer versions. Until you were fighting a big number of like, what, 3 of them? And of course he could link up with his other bodies and thus get healed because of it. So the fight basically TOOK FOREVER.
Man, you guys are so much more dedicated than I am. I get the ending credits and I'm like, "Cool! I actually finished a Tales game!" And I love the series. :-p

I think the only time I've ever done new game+ was Symphonia when I was younger, broker, and had a lot more free time.
I think the only time I've ever done new game+ was Symphonia when I was younger, broker, and had a lot more free time.
Now...my backlog is already full as is.
I played through Symphonia like, 6 times when I first had it on the Gamecube. I played through Abyss like 5-6 times before I moved on to greener pastures. I played through Vesperia once and gave up on it forever, and I never finished Graces F or Phantasia on the GBA.
I played through Symphonia and Vesperia a bunch of times, and Xillia twice. I'll definitely do a NG+ if Xillia 2, too.
I've done Abyss once, Graces f once, Dawn of the New World once (I've been meaning to replay it), Eternia once and I never got far in Phantasia since it plays so primitively on a GBA.
True, but I got really far into the game, but got lost with no help on how to complete it. I basically got to the point where you were supposed to find Origin to get his sword to defeat Dhaos, and then I just kinda got lost. Shame too since I was like, level 120 by then and even unlocked Sheena (not Symphonia Sheena, but the young Ninja girl who happens to have the same name)
I'm surprised at just how compelling and well-done the writing is in Xillia 2, especially contrasted with how half-assed the game seemed like it would be from first glance. I'm thoroughly impressed. How hope the next Tales is even half as good in that regard.
Spoilery thoughts (don't look if you haven't beaten the game, or Symphonia, or Abyss)
This game gets dark. Milla dies. Permanently. And it's tragic. Not to mention what happens with Victor. And Julius. Even the post-battle scenes become melancholy for a while.
I'm not used to death in Tales games being so impactful and permanent. Most of the time it's like Asch who doesn't do much to garner sympathy, or it's one of the "tragic" villain characters like the Chimeriad who die in some forced, melodramatic way and you never cared about them to begin with. It's possible for Zelos to die in Symphonia, but you have to go out of your way to have it happen and the characters seem to pretty much forget about him afterwards.
(not Symphonia Sheena, but the young Ninja girl who happens to have the same name)
You're half right. Her name is Suzu, but her last name is the same as Sheena's.
oh right, whoops. See, it's been so long I can't even remember the proper names. I can't even remember the main character's name.... Cless?
EDIT: Yup.
That game was hard as balls, too. Lots of grinding was needed to get past the tougher battles. That and loads of Summon Spirit/Magic spam. Loads of shameless Indignation spam was done in that game... and it happened to be Dhaos's weakness!
I beat Tales of Xillia earlier today and completed the post-game dungeon. Gotta say, I liked the game as a whole, even if that dungeon was -far- too long for what it was. Everything else was gravy, though. The only characters I didn't like were
Agria and Presa. The former because there's good crazy and there's Agria, and the latter because...of her outfit, mostly. Something more sensible or resembling clothing, and she would've been fine.
I was frankly just surprised by how much character the game had through the little skits and such that it had to offer. The characters really felt fleshed out for it, and they were always amusing. Really disappointed that I didn't pick it up as a CE when it first came out, as I would have liked that Milla figure, but at least I went that route with 2. Haven't started it yet (and I have a few games I want to finish first before I start it) but Ludger seems pretty cool, and the friend of mine that was really pushing me to play it seems to dig 2, so I'm definitely cool with trusting her opinion. Looking forward to that.
So um....anyone have a list of exactly what the rewards are in the post game dungeon store? there are a few that are obvious, but mostly im like 'whaaa?'
Does anyone know of a way in-game to see what bonuses are opened up for each arte, the more you use them? There's little stars that appear next to the artes, but I haven't found any way to view the bonuses that are added on the more you use individual artes.
In the same vein, does anyone have a complete listing of the bonus effects for artes usage? All the ones I've found seem to have decent detail for Jude/Ludger and virtually nothing for the other characters.

Most of them, like the ones called "Key of Kresnik" or "Unicorn Cleric" and so forth, are actually costumes that will turn you into the NPC that one relates to. Next spoiler down has a list.
Key of Kresnik - Elle
Agent of All Trades - Ivar
The Last Remaining Black Wing - Wingul
Kitarl Clan Patriarch - Jiao
Ex-Rats - Presa
Mademoiselle Travis - Agria
Waymarker Progenitor - Julius
President of Spirius - Bisley
DODA Director - Rideaux
Head of the Sharl Residence - Driselle
Late Liege of Sharlton - Cline
Great Spirit of Ice - Celsius
Verland Bank Collector - Nova
President's Secretary - Vera
Swordsman of Time - Cless (from Tales of Phantasia. Cameo character)
Unicorn Cleric - Mint (from Tales of Phantasia. Cameo character)
Fire Swordian Master - Stahn (from Tales of Destiny. Cameo character)
Lens Hunter - Rutee (from Tales of Destiny. Cameo character)
Hero of Neuestadt - Bruiser (from Tales of Destiny. Cameo costume only not in game)
Well, they're all NPCs from Xillia/Xillia 2 and then the cameo characters that are in Xillia 2. Plus the other one for some reason. No Yuri makes sense.
Plus the ability to see Elle using Gaius' huge katana or hear Agria say things like "High five! The proof of friendship!" more than make up for it IMO
So far my main concern is that the protagionist is going to be a knucklehead.
Tales seems to keep going back and forth with it lately.
Is it weird for me to say I've given up mostly on the characters not being horrid stereotypes? The Tales games make better characters out of their pets or puppets than their MCs I've noticed.

????? is the best mystic arte. But then, best character in the game too.
I haven't gotten the whole way through ToX2 yet, but while I think they were aiming to have the protagonist of the game be a silent protagonist/player stand-in character, it comes off more as someone with difficulty socializing, participating in normal social discourse, and even possibly someone with a spectrum disorder depending on the particular scene. This even gets lampshaded in a few of the victory quotes (Rowan + Ludger for example). I've found the characterization of the other party members to be pretty good, although there's some hints at character type trends I find a bit disappointing with Mila's character.
I'm around chapter 9/10 in the story, and there's a bit of a whiff of 'waifu' about how they've characterized Mila in this game. While it appears this may be a different person entirely than the Mila we saw in the previous game (please don't spoil things whichever way it turns out to be), I found it disappointing to disempower what was a very strong female character who did not need to be empowered through the role of a man).

Well...most Tales characters are anime stereotypes to some degree or another.
That isn't what bothered me. I just don't want another Emil or Asbel.

I dunno, Jude as a fairly well adjusted person on the outside, but a complete sociopathic serial killer on the inside was a bit of a fresh take for a main character.

NG+ 10x experience ready go! Nothing is difficult when you are level 200.
(and nope. Gotta do it like 10 times to clear it. It's awful)

I think it's the "gotta clear the backlog! FINISH ALL THE GAMES!" thing is the real problem here.
I just buy a game when I want one, and then play it until I don't have fun any more. Then I consider that game "done"
My backlog is zero.
3DS: 1607-3034-6970
I'm mostly the same. I play games until I'm bored with them.
However, I have plenty of games I want to play but never get around to playing them because I'm busy/doing something else.
Then, I buy more games on top of those that come out adding to those games I want to play but never getting around to play them.
Then, I do a lot of stuff outside of playing video games.
So...my backlog is basically games I haven't even started so I could get bored with them.
You and I are the same person. Right down to Symphonia being the only Tales of game to NG+.
