Oh, it's definitely different from TP--in many ways, it's actually more restrictive. It's a boon for casters, sure, but it's easy to get gauge blocked in Berseria, especially if you're not on top of things, and end up with very limited options.
Not disputing the differences at all, only the idea that the gauge somehow eliminates, or even cuts down on, mashing basic attacks in combat. It really doesn't (except for casters, obviously).
Oh that probably sounded different than I meant.
I mean that because it's per battle management it removes the part where to fill your bar back up you just do entire battles with basic attacks since those got you tp and finishing battle got you tp.

Ohh alright looks like the first set of DLCs costumes is available and free and it's the one that has Eizen's sexy hair?
It's not immediately clear that Arthur did a bad. I mean, yes... he killed a young boy, but it pushed the demon's back. I completely understand Velvet's hate boner, and we gon' kill that guy, but maybe Lephicet volunteered? It didn't seem like Arthur was doing the sacrifice with any evil intent... but then again, his lady person apparently has turned on him so maybe he did?
I'm probably like, 2 seconds from finding out heh...

Cancelled my order cause it still hasn't shipped. Just gonna download it.
Wait, free costumes? The only ones I saw on the store were a pack that was like 13 bucks.
Yeah, looking on the store, all I saw was a free item pack and the Costume Catalog 1 which is just a thing you need to use the $10 costume pack.
I haven't played many Tales games. Zestiria and Xillia are it I think, and both of them didn't really grab me for too long. Ooh, also Symphonia! That was a tales game right? I liked that one, but got stuck on a boss or something. Anyway, Berseria is really cool and once the story got going, I was immediately pulled in and want to see it through to the end.
Combat is so sweet too! Velvet's claw thing is super awesome, and almost feels like a win button. I haven't really noticed any drawback to using it other than sometimes fucking it up and getting stuck with only two souls for a couple seconds. Also, when you master a skill from a piece of gear, it's like a permanent thing right? I'll still have ATK +5 even if I switch to a new ring?

I was wild enthralled by Symphonia when it originally came out but never managed to grab any of the later installments until Zestiria two years ago, which really didn't thrill me all that much. From what I've heard of Berseria, though, a number of my concerns were addressed so I'll probably give it a go.
Do I need to equip Potentites or fuse them into weapons or something? Or do they just work if you got em? I got the snipe one, and there's a little blue dealie when I block for a second, so I assume they just work?
And IGN just called Berseria the best Tales game of all time. But that seemed to be mostly story related.
A Tales game getting praise for story is usually not common. So I would think that makes it worth it.
Also I like Tales for their plots. They are often HUGE hit or miss, but when they have hit they are some of my top RPGs of all time.
So now I am interested in this one. Since I can get this and Zesteria on PC now I might need to make it a point to try and get them both so I can play through a Tales game. Haven't finished one of them since Vesperia came out.
Wait Catalog 1 doesn't have the catalog 1 costumes?
That's... really dumb if true.

AFAIK, it's just some kind of compatibility thing that you need for the buyable pack. I bought the costume pack, and couldn't use them until I also downloaded the catalog.

Bathing suits were part of catalog 1 for Japan, why not here?
I like the default costume. It's got those stupid useless belts on places because why not? Bought the costume pack though, because there was some cool looking stuff in there. Got Velvet in a sweet ninja kimono get up now.

Ehhhh. Admittedly, I only tuned in and out of it being played in the house by someone else, but despite the opening going to totally be a different, 'darker' story of vengeance, the story hits all the bog standard Tales beats. The ending is also pretty shoddy, and one I'm especially sick of seeing from Japan in recent years. Certainly better put together and the mechanics better streamlined than Xillia and especially Zestiria without anywhere near as much absolute bullshit, and stronger than average for a Tales game, but I'd put it still well short of Abyss and Symphonia since it doesn't really fix a lot of Xillia's core problems as much as put bandaids and little distractions on them so you don't notice them as much, the pac-man nonsense being the crowning glory of that.

I can't tell if you are still talking about story when you compare it to Abyss / Symphonia or if you somehow shifts into talking about the Combat? I am less concerned about combat because I typically treat Tales combat like a more entertaining turn based RPG. As in I don't expect a ton out of it and am just surprised when I get it.
Combat in like, Tales of Eternia was mediocre but it kept me involved and the story is what kept me playing. Hell I even trudged through Legendia (the main story anyway) and that combat engine was just baaaaaaaad.

I haven't enjoyed a Tales game since Vesperia (which is one of my favorite modern JRPGs, which was followed by mostly disappointment in games like the newer Final Fantasies and things like that) but Berseria is shaping up to be exactly what I'm looking for. Just played for several hours straight, which is really saying something for me. My wife even watched for the story most of the time, which is nice. I've been playing Bloodborne lately and she does...
not like to watch that.
Mostly, I want a new Suikoden game (OR FRONT MISSION), but since that will never happen, if they can continue making Tales game like this one I'll be happy. Fun battle system without bogging you down in a million crafting systems or trying to reinvent the wheel by adding a mixmatched clusterfuck of western features that don't add to the game at all.. Great characters so far, really like Velvet (hi Odin Sphere) and her first companion whose name escapes me.
The battle system seems clunky to set up at first but once you get the hang of it, it's a breeze. Also you're immediately able to change back into normal person clothes when you get your prison doll get-up which is also a good idea.

Symphonia's combat has not aged well at all, imo. Hell...its probably at the bottom rung for me gameplay wise.

Story mostly, but I'm willing to argue the total package compared to Xillia and especially especially Zestiria's woes. Any improvements Xillia has in the combat over Symphonia (and I'd argue those as well), Xillia's area/dungeon designs and all its other sidequest/equipment/sphere grid/etc stuff is fingertips being shredded by a cheesegrater.

I've only played a few Tales games here and there. And only a small bit of Zestiria. What was the problem(s) with it?
From what little I've played of the Berseria demo, I would take Xillia's combat over its any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Cannot stand this new 3rd-person Tales combat. But I also play Tales games almost exclusively for the combat, with the characters as distant secondary reasons and the plot not a factor at all. I can appreciate that Berseria is trying to satisfy different players.

How are you talking about the ending to Berseria already though? I guess maybe it already came out in Japan?
Coming back to this thread made me try to see if Rebirth ever at least got a menu translation. Still fucking nothing. There have been full manual translations of the game for like 10 years. Is the game coded like butt that it cannot be patched
Almost makes me want to learn how to do that kind of programming, because I can survive without the story but there is way too much going on in menus to deal with just trying to memorize a few japanese word patterns.
I have enough love for Symphonia that I can get over some dated aspects of its combat (like no free-run) and enjoy it nearly as much as I did back when it released. It's still one of my favorite combat systems. I'd place Xillia second and maybe Vesperia third.
That said, I've never gone deep into the combat in any Tales game.

Xillia? Okay, deep breath.
For starters, the area design is atrocious. Wide open meadow after wide open meadow after wide open meadow. Same goes for towns, which are needlessly huge and occasionally convoluted with jack shit to actually do in them. Plus, there's shit strewn around everywhere in them. 98% of it is just random collectable crap ala MMOs, but major items and sidequest stuff is also squirreled away in random nooks and crannies in them, so you just happened to not check the south side of one rock? Welp, you just missed the Exp Share item. And speaking of the dungeons as well as the areas, it loves to put high level areas or monsters that you're not supposed to fight when you arrive right next to, or even fucking INSIDE the areas you are supposed to be. And this shit will instantly ohko your entire party with no warning. And then there's the sidequests. Basically every dungeon has a post-completion sidequest which is "go back to the end of the dungeon and then leave." Some have multiple. Some will send you into those super areas well before you're capable of surviving them. A lot of them are looking for some random widget on a random map with zero indication of which map or where. "But they're optional and pretty much just for cosmetics/trophies!" Yeah, except for the few that expand gameplay mechanics. Which ones? Who knows! The sphere lilim grid is almost comically terrible. It's hard to navigate, slow to load, slow to apply stuff, and you get the option of manually suffering through it for every single character, or letting the AI choose essentially at random. Equipment progression is done entirely through turning in the literal mountains of random garbage that's constantly dumped on you. Aside from the occasional sudden deaths mentioned above, the combat's mostly solid... aside from if you have the gall to be controlling a main character and using the game's central link mode, in which case it'll occasionally decide that when you pressed the normal attack button, you actually wanted to do an uninterruptable combination attack with your partner, regardless of whether or not it'll hit the enemy. And by uninterruptable, I mean by you. Enemies are still able to hit you out of it just fine.
And then there's the writing...
After loving most of the Tales games up through Abyss, I was not a fan, to put it mildly. I really liked Vesperia too, right up until it completely shit itself on the major story beats and I just said "Nope. I'm done. Fuck this. Story already ended. This last quarter is garbage and I am 150% finished."

So far my biggest issue with Berseria is that it seems a little difficult to get long combo strings going.
That said I'm right at the start and guessing you'll unlock abilities to help with that later.

It was out in Japan nearly 7 months ago. I more or less live with an 'importer' (does having a Japanese PSN ID and downloading even count as importing?) who plays such things. I do too on occasion, more for PC things that will never be translated, but having been a part of the localization industry and perpetually 3-12 months behind the times, I try to support them.

Your point about Vesperia makes me feel like you think a lot like I do. Because I loved Abyss, and I loved Vesperia till all the sudden it shifted nonsensically near the end, and the ending made me stare at the screen in disbelief. I couldn't believe that was the end of the game. It felt like the "bad ending" in any other game.
I have yet to play Xillia but I own it. Never got around to it earlier and then my PS3 broke (well, my son as a 1 year old kept putting coins in the disk slot and it eventually broke the motor so discs wouldnt go in). So its been put on a delay. Would much rather just play it on a PC anyway though. But that isn't an option I guess.
I'm surprised to hear a strong dislike for Vesperia's ending, particularly compared to Abyss. I thought Vesperia's ending was underwhelming but nothing worse than that. It didn't really bother me and I kind of dug the idea of
the sort-of antagonist aquiescing to team after losing the final fight.

I mean that because it's per battle management it removes the part where to fill your bar back up you just do entire battles with basic attacks since those got you tp and finishing battle got you tp.

Not sure! I'd imagine so but don't quote me on that.
I just went on the PS Store website to see if any of the outfits were up and saw it there listed as free along with a free item pack of some sort.
That's how TP worked in Zestiria, so it's not a new mechanic. The maximum value changing is, but other than that it works in pretty much the same way.
Errr..
Zestiria didn't have TP either man. I never said it was a new system either. Although it is re-worked and most people say for the better.
Just a TPless one. Which Zesty was also a TPless one but Zesty was butts so I didn't get to enjoy it being TPless.
