I'm surprised to hear a strong dislike for Vesperia's ending, particularly compared to Abyss. I thought Vesperia's ending was underwhelming but nothing worse than that. It didn't really bother me and I kind of dug the idea of
the sort-of antagonist aquiescing to team after losing the final fight.
There's the ending to Vesperia, and then there's the 10 hours of bullshit fetch quests that happen after the ending with Random Dude Who Says Stuff's Bad and Shut Up, It Just Is, Okay, Because This is a Tales Game before they let you start an NG+.

Was it only 10 hours? It felt so much longer than 10 hours. It felt like an entire third of the game, and it was all stupid, and nothing interesting happened, and the combat didn't get more interesting. If I were to play Vesperia again, I would legitimately stop before the end and just not waste my time.
Possibly. Like I said, I never actually finished it. Maybe the dungeons and fetch quests got even longer and shittier. It pushed me over the edge after the appalling end to Yuri and friends' hypocritical murder arc was an astonishingly oblivious group hug.
I'll still defend zestiria's story. I really enjoyed the entire thing and thought it had a solid ending. You had to talk to people and read the skits, but it stayed on message and stayed consistent far more than Tales usually does.
Abyss still best story. Yiss.
The combat is eh. There is a learning curve, and once I got better at the system it felt pretty okay. I think were I to make a wish list I'd definitely want them to make switching forms be more seamless. Kind of like how you could switch weapons mid combo in the hack/GU games which made combos amazing.
Hearts R is still my favorite combat even after messing with Berseria some more. I see what they are going for with it but I'm not sure it's really engaging enough to me currently.
I think Destiny and Destiny 2 are more dark than Berseria. The story so far isn't bad. I actually rather like it, but it definitely feels very much like Tales mixed with too much angsty light novel.
Abyss should have been a Jade and Guy buddy-cop RPG. Even though I've not much love for the game overall, story-wise, those two are always going to be amongst my favourite Tales characters.

I've played through Vesperia multiple times and I honestly have no idea what part of the game either of you are describing.
For me, Abyss comes to mind as a game that should have ended a dozen hours earlier. I can't think of anything in Vesperia as bad as what happens in Abyss.

Although gonna play through KH2.8 tonight. So Tales will have to wait to tomorrow!
It has TP. It's called something else, but it's TP.
I want to re-address this now that I've actually played.
It's way further from TP than I even though.
I'm now genuinely curious why you would even say this?
Basic attacks literally don't exist. You can stand still for 1 second and refill. Heck you can still use your artes even when empty just at disadvantage.

I suppose I was thinking about it in the context of something like how MP worked in Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia compared to all the games before that. I spend it on moves, it comes back without requiring items.

I think they're talking about everything that happened after you beat
Alexei,
who is easily one of the most poorly-explained Tales Big Bads (I hear even the PS3 updated version fails to completely explain what sent him off the deep end), and the game is now devoted to cleaning up his mess. While there are still cases of character development, pretty much all the plot twists and memorable moments of the game are behind you.
Last Tales I played was Vesperia - the problems with recent Tales games kept turning me away.
However, so far so good with Berseria. I'm only a few hours in but I'm astonished at how clean and refined the game feels.
-Short load times
-Solid 60 fps (on PS4 anyway)
-Map is easy to read and useful
-Collection points are visible from a distance and easy to spot
-Areas are fairly open, so minimal camera trouble
-"Libra" on enemies works instantly, pauses the game while active, and let's you instantly jump to that enemies bestiary entry!
Characters and story are likeable enough so far, and the combat is great!
No TP and controls feel responsive. I really like how blocking/dodging was implemented, and FINALLY we have a Tales game that's Free Run all the time (a.k.a. like every other game on earth).
Like I said I've only just
escaped prison and crashed my ship
but to be honest I'm enjoying this more than FFXV.
Abyss was cool until Luke cut his hair and became awful.
Luke was never awful. He was just a kid in a teenagers body.
That's, like, literally the most awful kind of person that could exist.

Well, I would like to see you save the world / risk your life with only 5 years of real world experience.
I still think he was a very well handled character. Just because he was a annoying doesn't mean he was a bad character, I consider him written well. I enjoyed the "experience" of watching him grow.
Might be a little biased, my son is named Luke -_-
Something that's frustrated me with the most recent games is how bland and repetitive the environments were, as well as how uninspired and half-assed the dungeons were. Voice acting, character and enemy design has remained solid, but otherwise games like Xillia and Zestiria seem very visibly made on a budget. The rest of Xillia was good enough to salvage it for me, but not Zesteria. This ongoing trend made me wary of picking up future Tales games.
If I didn't hear so much praise here I would've dismissed Berseria altogether.
You have to keep in mind that Namco is still making Tales games for last generation systems, so the production keeps suffering because of that. Berseria is getting sold in the West as a PS4 release, but it's still a PS3 game (in Japan only) that just got a port.
Berseria is getting there. Many of its areas are quite lovely, and the character models and animations look great. It's just that the level design is a bit flat and some of the dungeon areas were really half-assed and generic looking. They put a nice amount of detail into the towns, though.
Want to find me on a gaming service? I'm SwashbucklerXX everywhere.
Hrmm... I appear to be stuck. I'm at the seagate thing, and got the control room key. Now I'm trying to make my way to the battleship, but there's a boulder blocking the path to progress. I've been everywhere else, and I'm kind of at a loss on where to go.
Edit: Derp derp... figured it out.

I see nobody has mentioned you actually get a third outfit when you get Velvet's normal one (in addition to her prologue outfit that's perfectly normal).

An awful character doesn't mean a poorly handled.
It doesn't matter how accurate or how well done a child trapped in a teenager is done, I don't want to see it.
Even if a character is well written and very accurate if it's a person you find grating you may not enjoy having them star in the game you're playing.
I am super enjoying Berseria! Combat is really fun, chracters are great (especially Magilou!), and the story is coherent and interesting. Makes me want to go back and give Zestiria another shot once I'm done with this one. I don't remember what put me off of it the first time I tried to play it. Combat's different or something, right?

Zestiria makes some bad choices that severely limit your options for who to play as and party comp. Fusion is almost mandatory for the stat boost late game too. The plot is fairly shallow and cliche.
On the other hand... some of the best character writing. Edna and Lailah are amazing, Rose is closely behind, and a game just starring those three and their banter would be awesome.
And not all the story beats are weak, just the overarching plot is unsurprising. Some bits are nice twists. There are some holes in the worldbuilding too.
Its a decent experience overall but not enough to NG+ for me.

Berseria is way better than Zestiria. It goes out of its way to fix many of the issues.
It's not surprising you were put off. I've been a long time Tales fan and it's the one in the series I just gave up on wholly.
As for this game though.. I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope they put out the next set of DLC outfits next week. Very weird that the first set they put out here isn't even a set that has outfits for all characters nor was it the actual Catalog 1 from Japan. Who made that decision BAMCO?
I figured out parrying, wow. I thought combat was good before, now it's great. Parrying for that 4th Soul is so much better than waiting for a Stun proc.
And the timing on it is generous, which I like. I'm not a teenager anymore and my reflexes aren't what they used to be.

Oh there's a parry?
Is it using block at the correct time? I hadn't tried yet. Is there an in game tutorial where they teach that? If so I guess I just havent gotten to it yet.

Oh man do you ever! Once Velvet becomes grimdark Velvet with that demon claw... oh yes
So, I just got Malak #2 added to my party. I went to go change his hairstyle and the game just flat out spoiled something kinda major I think...?

Jerk Luke was the best worst person.
That said I did prefer his emo haircut.

Uh, you know that grade stuff you're constantly rewarded? That has no use whatsoever (in 99% of Tales games) except for buying NG+ shit.
It has immediate use in Zesty and especially in Berseria, though.
In Berseria I believe it is what controls the amount of xp you get towards mastering item skills if I'm not mistaken.
I have character voices in movies, but not in other cutscenes. And most of them really feel like they are supposed to be voiced.
Cutscenes are voiced.
No problems on PC here
