I find the combat fun and the characters likeable, though not to the same extent as some of my favorite older Tales games. The graphics and art direction are massively improved from PS3-era quadrilogy of visually bland, cookie-cutter games.
The story is unfortunately very barebones and disappointing. The region design is also too rigidly themed and one-note, especially between the first two regions, which undercuts the believability of the setting and the narrative as a whole.
Tales games are my video game comfort food so I always enjoy them, but the blah story did make this latest entry a bit underwhelming.

Finally getting around to playing Tales of Arise. Just finished up the ice zone. Is.....is this game bad or is it me?
Calling a game like this "bad" would definitely feel odd. It works great mechanically, controls well, has wonderful production value, absolutely gorgeous. I'm not quite sure how that could be "bad".
There's certainly some things that could be improved, and plenty of personal things one may not enjoy. But no way is it bad.
As an aside, I can recommend Scarlet Nexus, another recent Bandai Namco game, to anyone who enjoys Tales games.
It's an anime-style action JRPG similar to the Tales games, with many similar vibes while also feeling fresh and different in all of the right ways. Incidentally it has Xillia's dual protagonist gimmick but does it better and more thoroughly.

Valid. I should have specified I meant the plot flow/narrative. Mechanistically it's very good, like most Tales games.
Maybe it's a symptom of me getting older but I'm getting more and more critical on things that don't feel natural. I'm not saying every action needs lengthy exposition, but the first npc death has everyone reeling but you literally all just met. And the replacement character is all over the place with "grrr I hate you and what you did in the name of revolution" and then "nah cool let's travel together also yay revolution"
