I feel like building U/R Storm. If you ditch the fetches and just play Sulfur Falls and Steam vents you barely lose anything. You can also run Gifts in it now that Deathrite isn't everywhere. I don't know why Grapeshot is still a legal card.

So I've decided I want to put together a deck that simply makes the opponent deck themselves. It's just for playing against friends so really anything is legal.

I've already figured blue/black, based around Traumatize, Mind Sculpt, and Haunting Echoes. Anyone know any more off the top of their head? That plus some light removal/bounce/discard and I should be ok.

I can attest that this deck is super fun for you and really boring for your opponent (and who cares about that jerk?)

Get yourself 3 spindown life counters though, one each for red mana, blue mana, and storm count. Makes the bookkeeping way easier

Because it's a pretty dumb card that basically says to R&D "You can't give Red any halfway decent ritual effects or you will break Modern in half." Rite of Flame, Seething Song, and Chrome Mox are all cards that cold be considered for unbanning (Mox is a stretch, I admit) if Grapeshot wasn't a card. At least you can sweep Goblin tokens before they run you over.

I just want a Red Dark Ritual, basically.

On a whim I bought 5 Theros packs yesterday, since I haven't bought new Magic cards in almost a year (moving + new job + real life)

4/5 rares were the dual-mana lands. Two of them were the same.

    Crap.

Those paid for your packs and then some, Scry lands are going for $5 a piece

i love figuring out ways to play modern without fetches. i have shaman aggro and soul sisters built.

but it's p much always better to to have them.

THing about fetches is that there are only five and they are all broad enough that their interchangable and its also not hard to find people at my shop that will trade fetch for fetch.

So if you get 8 you're kinda done.

You know, except for like, Zoo.

Starcity is personally responsible for Wasteland being a $70 card instead of a $30 card. I'm wondering how big Magic has to get for there to be antitrust lawsuits against people ruining parts of the secondary market.

you mean by single-handedly creating a massive environment for competitive Legacy play?

No, there's a great deal of evidence to suggest that they spent months buying as many wastelands as they could from every vendor and eBay auction under the sun. It was literally without any news breaking or anything significant happening that they just jacked up the price of wasteland from $25 to $50 one night, and when people realized they couldn't get them anywhere else, the price of wasteland just became $50.

I think for about a week beforehand they were even buying wastelands at like $20, which is about what the card was "worth" so they got even more. There was a thread on the official MTG forums when the whole fiasco went down.

And as silence said, they (probably [almost certainly]) did a fairly similar thing with dual lands, stifle, entomb, Bob and a few choice others.

But it loses Soul Sister's main attraction: being mono-color and thus cheap.

So my son and I were playing Modern the other night. I was playing Melira Pod, he was playing GR Tron. I got my life combo off, but he nuked the board before I could get Redcap in, then he got out Karn, stole my lands, ended up restarting the game, and winning.

    I'm so proud....

quick mechanics question, can a planeswalker use an ability the turn they come into play

The only cards that cant use an ability on their first turn are creature cards without haste.

It took me a bit to realize Planeswalkers are not creatures, meaning they die to stuff like Negate

  • PeccaviPeccavi Registered User regular
Well, creature cards can use abilities too, just not abilities with the tap symbol (although to make things more confusing, they can be tapped for abilities where the cost is something like, "Tap a creature you control: X").

    1x Molten-tail Masticore

    Artifacts (6)
    3x Aether Vial
    3x Slate of Ancestry

    Other (4)
    4x Snapback

    Lands (19)
    3x Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
    1x Academy Ruins

Architect/Master of Waves seems gross. I'm not sold on some of your choices (I think you have better filtering options available if your goal is to find a one-off Masticore?) but the deck is super cool in its own right.

    Needs more Master of Etherium!

I was gonna say Architect doesn't actually do anything for Master of Waves except add 2 devotion, but the Master of Waves elementals do let you have a bunch of extra mana for artifact shit so that's something

  • DaebunzDaebunz Registered User regular
    edited February 2014
its a 2nd lord for the elementals so they dont go away if master dies (pumps blue dudes for whatever reason) and even if your board is clear cept architect you have 10 artifact mana

this makes metamorphs effectively free and slate of ancestry useable in the same turn to pretty much draw 5+ cards to find more metamorphs/masters/architects

Maybe run some fetchlands so you don't lock yourself with Sage? You don't have to worry about enabling opponent's deathrite shamans anymore. Islands are a lot cheaper obviously, and the upside probably isn't that high.
