No one takes curling seriously, do they? The team comes out in their silly pants and jackets and they slide the stone and do the sweepsweepsweep and a winner is declared and the whole time everyone, athletes included, just laugh that this is in the olympics. Right?
Thousands of hot, local singles are waiting to play at bubbulon.com.
I'm not sure how much scope there is to make American football an Olympic sport
Are there even any countries other than the US where it's played beyond the hobby level?
For baseball there's Japan but I don't know if it's widely played either
Football will never be an Olympic sport. If it were, US would win gold every year, Canada and Australia would fight it out for bronze and silver but at a much lower level of play, and maybe a few other countries like the UK would send in a team purely as a token.
Baseball, yes. In fact it was in the games until the last Olympics. MLB in the US is by far the dominant league for a number of reasons, but it's still pretty popular in a few Latin American and Asian countries. Cuba in particular is actually waaaay better at baseball than us, and Japan and Korea are both pretty competitive. It's just not quite popular enough to be in the Olympics, given time and budget constraints.
Actually it was an Olympic Sport for a good amount of time.
Part of the reason it got taken out was the MLB refusing to pause the season to allow players to play for national teams during the Olympics. So that tends to suck up a lot of the good players. Also the World Baseball Classic came around and is played during a time period so it doesn't interfere with either the MLB or the Japanese leagues.

Only because it's trying to force its way into the Summer games, which is a much more competitive field. Because let's face it, the vast majority of the Winter Olympics is made up of gimmick sports that maybe 3-4 nations actually take seriously (Slope Style, Biathlon, Giant Slalom, Curling, etc etc). Really only figure skating and hockey have anything resembling global appeal. If baseball were played in the snow, the IOC would have a diamond built tomorrow.

you have grossly overestimated the number and quality of "fun things to do in Scandinavia"
Basically more people play baseball than probably any Winter Olympics event except skiing and snowboarding
I was thinking more in terms of the number of countries that could field a viable team rather than the raw number of people that play it.
If a sport is only participated in at a high level by a couple of countries then it seems odd to make it the focus of an international tournament (though I didn't know there were multiple countries that played baseball).

I know lots of you laugh at curling but I curled for my high school and it's not nearly as easy as most think. It's not a matter of throwing it as hard as you can. It takes a lot of control to have the right weight, maintain your balance and get a proper spin. All while your sweepers have to move with this rock on a sheet of fucking ice while sweeping in order to provide a smoothed surface for it to travel. It's not for everyone but I find it very similar to the skill required for golf.

Yea i was just being a boner there. There are a significant enough amount of countries that play though, but not nearly a majority

i mean we forced our basketball on the world already
why not let us follow it up with baseball and football and like rodeo sports and nascar and magic the gathering and whatever other dumb pastimes that the US has a huge advantage in.
When it comes to the winter olympics I kind of think it's reasonable for a sport to have fewer participating nations, given the focus is primarily snow sports that are only feasible at all in certain areas of the world.

There is nothing sexier than women's curling.
