Hey people! Maybe some of you knowledgable people can help me out.
I just upgraded my ancient amd 1800 with a geforce 2 that I got four years ago to a pentium d dual 2.8 core with 1gb of memory and a 512mb graphics card.
The AMD was not exactly state of the art when I got it and it has not been able to run most of the games that were released since i bought it (with the exception, with some coaxing, of dawn of war and world of warcraft). So my question to you is this:
What games released for the pc in the past few years should I try? I like strategy and rpg games, but also like a bit of fps now and again. I haven't paid the pc gaming scene any notice for a long time, so I know next to nothing about what is good and what is bad.
Yeah I was gonna pick C&C 3 up on my way home today actually, massive fan of the red alert games, but never really got into the tiberium series, so I'm sort of really excited but kind of cautious at the same time.
Half-life 2 is not a problem, I already got it for my xbox. I know it probably isn't quite the same, but i'm far enough through the xbox one to not want to restart.
what do the total war games play like? Never actually seen one in action. I presume you pre-deploy troops rather than create them on the fly, a la Kessen, or is it a base building one like c&c and warcraft?
What about that warhammer mark of chaos thing, is that any good? or I think there were some lord of the rings strategy games? I like both fantasy and sci-fi strategy equally. I don't discriminate.
what about shooters? or rpgs? c&c will probably occupy me for a while strat wise...

I don't know about Mark of Chaos. Heard some bad things about it, but nothing more than rumours.
I know from experience that Dawn of War is pretty good, though.

The latest Total War series have two levels: overall map and battlemaps. In the overall map, your faction manages cities, move armies, engage in trade, diplomacy, espionage not unlike Civilization.
But once your units engage the enemy in battle, the game goes into battlemap where you deploy them. An infantry unit might comprise of 60-odd men, so if you have many units under your command, you would see thousands in the battlefield.
Battles seek to replicate realistic conditions such that your men get tired from prolonged fighting (and exhausted troops can't fight well), your men may break and flee if the fight goes poorly (and stand to be captured by the pursuing enemy), successful use of tactics such as charging heavy cavalry into the rear or flanks of enemy troops will yield much better results than a full out frontal assault on the enemy.
I like how a battle is more dependent on tactics, psychological and physical factors rather than whoever brings the units with the best stats.

You haven't played Half-Life 2 until you've played it with a mouse+keyboard, seriously.. this is pretty much true of all fps.
C&C 3 has a mix of generals (bleh), Tiberium series and a sprinkling of Red Alert. Do I think it's better than the perfection that is RA2? No, but it's still a good game. Multiplayer is very buggy atm. (it does feel rushed in some areas, like multiplayer and some little things.. like you can't build walls but it looks as though you may have been able to build walls but they disabled/removed that ability due to game bugs like perhaps pathing issues with the AI)
Oblivion is a must, at first it's got a bit of a "dumped you in" syndrome but once you learn your way around it's great. (dark brotherhood stuff is excellent)
FEAR is a decent enough fps, relies on a few too many horror clichés though.
Armed Assault is good (if you like Operation Flashpoint and uber realistic soldiers sims. This game is ultra hard btw), but currently is buggy and has performance issues.

I've got a spare copy of Portal, if anyone wants it message me.
I quit playing M:TW2 after the enemy wouldn't attack me unless I halted my rain of arrows. They'd look like they were going to charge, but then would retreat once they got into javelin range.
For some reason, I still find myself going back to Battlefield 2. It's an enjoyable online game when you get in a squad* with some guys playing for real. I didn't care for the BF2142 demo at all though..not liking the futuristic aspects at all.

You should consider upgrading to two gigs of RAM. It will improve your gaming performance significantly and will complement your dual core processor, as well. 2 gigs is becoming the norm for gaming, especially with the shift to Vista.
As for games, HL2 and FEAR are both great first person shooters. The PC version of HL2 is far better than the Xbox version largely because of mods--I don't know if you get Counter-Strike: Source on Xbox but I can gaurantee you the Xbox version (assuming there is one) is far worse than the PC version. You really should pick up the PC version of HL2.
Oblivion is also an amazing open-ended RPG that you should definitely check out.
well 2 gigs of ram would certainly be nice. I wasn't the person who planned this upgrade (I have trouble understanding pc components these days now that it's all dual-core and geforce 7800, feel like I skipped a year of tech school. Time was you just picked the stuff with the highest numbers....) but the guy who did thought i might be able to use my old memory. Turns out it was JUST too old. shame, as that would have given me 1.75 gigs.
I can't justify dropping money on half-life peecee, sorry guys. Fear sounds cool. oblivion i might take a look at, but i couldn't get into morrowind for the life of me, so i'm sceptical.

I'd go HL2, Episode 1, Far Cry, the Prince of Persia series, and, uh, Stalker's pretty grand also.

For the OP, what kind of video card do you have? They sometimes cram lots of cheap RAM on underpowered cards to get them to sell.

Get Hitman: Blood Money. Which is also on Steam.
