Official Mass Storage USB for Wii!
With many people complaining about the small size of the 512MB internal memory of Nintendo's Wii and the current lack of compatibility between the system and external USB storage devices, there appears to be good news on the horizon. An official Press Release has gone out from eSOL, Ltd, stating that its leading embedded middleware products, "PrFILE2" FAT file system and "PrUSB/Host" USB host stack, have been selected by Nintendo for use with the Wii console.
Both software products constitute fundamental functionalities in the Wii console - managing and transferring data and files with external media. In particular, PrFILE2 provides file management functions that read and write data from SD memory cards, as well as other media. PrUSB/Host functions are used in Wii, to provide USB host functions.
"I am very happy that we could take part in the development for Wii, a new game console from Nintendo. I believe that our products were selected because Nintendo highly-valued our long, successful history with many digital consumer products and high-reliability and functionality based on that. We will continue to provide superior products and technical services to strongly support developers in embedded software development."
- Nobuyuki Ueyama, Executive Vice President, Embedded Products Division at eSOL.
So could this finally be the answer we have all been looking for when it comes to downloading lots of Virtual Console games?
Stay tuned for further details...

It also means the chance of VC titles from other consoles, like the Saturn. ROMs that would be too large for the current storage space.
WHY
Also: Awesomesauce on the WiiDrive.
This is announcement that Nintendo has bought technology that allows console support external USB devices. Nintendo hasn't announced anything, so title is more than little misleading.
Go ahead Nintendo, make my day.
... really? There's 48 slots!
I'm quite the Virtual Console fan. Between those, the pre-installed slots, and the stuff from Wii Ware I think I'm just about to flow over into the fourth (and last, right?) page of available slots.
I'd have to look when I get home, but yeah.
They really need to make a general Virtual Console channel. It's messy and cluttered to have every game take up a single channel. And while I haven't downloaded as much as you, I am still well into my second page of channels. By the end of the console's lifetime, I have no doubt I'll have filled every single one.
But this is good news. I don't have any Virtual Console games yet, because I had to pay off some debt (Which is now payed. Glee!), but it sounds nice to be able to store stuff on something other than the internal memory.
I have all my music/videos on it, but still nuff space for wii stuff.
They most-certainly do. They've not even scratched at the surface of possible Virtual Console releases, and I've even held back on purchasing some that I eventually intended to purchase. Give me a Virtual Console channel, and let it read games from the SD slot, not just internal memory. Save internal memory for thinks like the Everybody Votes Channel, Internet Channel, those type of "operating system"-type channels.
oh and cacheing to the HD would be nice too but probably not feasible
Excitetruck lets you use your own music...
gee, one game i haven' t played in two months ;-)
Not to thread-jack, but while I think that custom soundtrack support is a great idea, and should continue to be a requirement of games on the 360 platform, I have to say that I don't really use it much. The exception would be a driving game, or something like Grand Theft Auto or Crackdown. In the case of the latter two I prefer the music to play when driving only, so in those instances it's still up to the developer. Crackdown failed in that department, but hopefully Rockstar finds a way to blend 360's custom soundtracks into the vehicle radio stations, so you can still walk around without "music coming from the sky".
Back on topic, I can't personally think of any Nintendo titles, minus a few driving games like Excite Truck, where I would rather not hear the game's soundtrack.
Edit - Oh, we had another thread on this already. o.o
